do you think the primary purpose of the thugs was to physically hurt the mother and her children?
it's like the SUV argument ... people driving SUVs because they think they are safer because they are bigger and can see above small cars ... well, they had to keep making them bigger and bigger ...
if the problem is armed robbery - the solution is not to arm people ... the solution is to decrease the desire for armed robbery ... the answer to that is not guns ...

polaris, you're comparing SUV's, the nuclear arms race & home security? this is what you're doing, yes/no?

ok ... i will type the words that should be obvious ...
NO - I do not want the invaders to have been successful ... I also do not believe that physical harm to her and her children were their intent ... I also do not believe potentially killing someone is worth defending your tv and jewelery over ...
what I AM trying to get across is that arming people may seem like a way of protecting one self but it does not address the crux of the problem ...
this happened in Detroit where the economy has gone to shits and the gap between the haves and have nots is enormous ... unemployment is very high and the city's ability to deliver services is impacted by the fact it is essentially broke ...
do you want to live in a society where people are shooting at each other every day/night? do you like the idea of the old wild west kind of justice? everyone carries a piece and let's settle our differences with a good ole' fashioned shootout?
what kind of society are you trying to defend here?

The mother was within her right to defend herself- especially being inside of her home. When you expressed shooting someone for trying to take your jewellery is poor, are you suggesting she should have bundled her kids up and allowed the intrusion to occur? Some of these 'intrusions' go badly for the homeowner. Are you thinking she should have rolled the dice that this one wasn't going to go badly for her?
Recalling the panic she felt, the mom says "I let them know I had a gun once they were in the house. They said no you don't so I shot off the first round. I wasn't feeling anything at the moment, I got scared afterwards."
Seems she did alright here.
I have always been for gun legislation, but maintained such a basic right; however, given a shotgun will suffice nicely for the scenario Unsung has presented to push his cause, I think that there is no place for the AR-15 or a 9mm handgun. You only need such weaponry to commit murder or shoot beer cans- neither outweigh the risks associated with such weaponry on the streets.

I totally support what this woman did, and not sure this would fall under the yet-another-gun-thread scenario.
Sometimes that self-protection actually works; acknowledging it takes nothing away from the fuckwads who have no idea of the responsibility they must possess with those arms.
Like your analogy of SUV’s and guns.
Selfishness blinds people to what is good for society and all be damned if the whole country goes to shit as long as they get theirs. Hope the mom and kids move cause next time they’re coming in blazing.
As to arming the whole population, well I drive with my fellow citizens, stand behind them in fast food lines, rock out with them at concerts and sorry, 95% can’t handle the responsibility of gun ownership.
May take a while, but as people that desire guns have a higher chance of dying by guns, Darwinism will ultimately remove the fear gene from the pool.
I am glad it worked out for this woman, but if my safest option is to have a shotgun in the house (anyone know if this woman's was locked up?), I'll take my chances unarmed. I couldn't live with myself if my need to gun up caused a tragedy.

This is a story of a hero... where the gun owner is there to protect children. But, there are stories where the gun owner is the villian... such as this one:
http://news.yahoo.com/39-feel-accountable-39-regret-dad-whose-gun-181719089--abc-news-topstories.html;_ylt=AwrSyCNCRAZTcVMAtZ3QtDMD
"His daughter, Cierra, 9, and her 10-year-old friend Eric Klyaz had been handling his gun - a 9 mm pistol - when it went off. Eric was killed.
Francis said he kept the unloaded gun stored in a box in the garage with the ammunition kept separate. The prosecutor argued that the gun had been loaded."
...
I guess my point is, we can credit some people and blame others regarding the presence of guns in households with children. No matter how well we plan to train our kids of the dangers of guns and teach gun safety (reference Adam Landza), the fact remains, as long as humans remain in the equation, errors are a great probability.
This original story would have never been posted is the story went the other way and one of the children brought the gun to school. In that case, the mother would not be held as a hero, right?
...
And I suppose another point is this... these types of stories support neither side of the gun debate. They are alll anecdotal, at best. For every story that is brought about that supports one side... there is another story to counter it... regardless of which side you support. Gun supporters will only present those stories that support their side of the arguement and gun control advocates willl only provide stories that support their view. The rest of us need to take them all for what they are worth.
Hail, Hail!!!
