is it just me...

or does Matt Cameron play some of the songs too fast? I have a ton of the bootlegs and just started listening to the new Philly ones...this is not the first time I've noticed tempo issues. You can hear Matt counting off the songs, and I think he might be better off using a click. In my opinion it ruins some of the songs especially for Mike's leads or Ed's vocals. Mind Your Manners is one I really noticed it on.

They do play the songs really, really fast. I don't view it as criticism. It would be criticism if we thought Matt and the band didn't want it that way. Obviously they want to play the songs faster, and it is a fair question as to why. Certainly a question that deals with music, and not personal crap. I didn't hear that interview and suspect the person who asked the question did it in a very disrespectful way.
Listened to Mind Your Manners yesterday (Philly 1), much better live. Given to Fly is another I love. The studio version sounds way to slow for my liking. To each their own.

yes.
it is just you.
Saying he should use a click suggests that Matt is screwing up, which he's not. The guy's a total pro. They're playing the songs at the tempo that they want to play them, however that's decided on. Listen to some of the same songs over a long time span. They're played at the exact tempo.
A drummer can use a click track in the studio, maybe... live NEVER!
Maybe they play them faster because the setlist is 35 damn songs...

1) I find it inconceivable that if anybody in the band had an issue with the tempo being to fast/slow during live songs that they would keep quiet about it. They're professionals - they're playing the exact tempo they want to play at.
2) listen to any of the "solo" versions of given to fly that mike plays on youtube or on single video theory (?) - it's waaaay faster than the album. I think that's how it was written so that's how they play it live.
3) the tempo on an album is usually slower than live - sometimes it's a recording/production thing, sometimes it's the fact that it just sounds too rushed if you try to record it at the "regular" speed. also, try playing slow when there are 20,000 fans screaming at you. as a sidenote, I remember reading an old PJ article, maybe in rolling stone back before vs. came out, and it referenced that some of the songs (leash in particular, I think) were captured at a slower tempo than when they played live.
okay, that's 3 thoughts. sue me.

I thought Matt was most amazing at Brooklyn 2.
Pearl Jam could have turned out differently if Matt had'nt joined.
Neil Peart, arguably the greatest rock drummer ever, uses a click track live. Keeps the music in sync with the live effects. I'm sure there are a gob of others drummer that do of the same reason, and/or because they're hacks. I always assumed Tool used them, but they have a really hands on lighting guy.
I think a little speeding up is natural for the transition from studio to live, but there are several examples where it's gotten too fast. No groove, the notes don't get a chance to bloom and Ed struggles to keep up with the lyrics and breathing. Clearly a band decision, b/c songs that start with the others are just as fast.
Trust me, it is not just him.

Are you sure Peart uses a click track? If so it is because Rush plays with so much prerecorded parts on SO many songs (even the ones where they don't REALLY need them to pull them off live). That's the only reason for click tracks live. No respectable drummer playing with other musicians and no canned parts should use one.
Matt plays fast cause that's how he plays. He also doesn't start fast songs like Given to Fly, so it's not his fault. It is weird to go back and listen to Live on Two Legs and see how they used to play some of those songs so much slower and close to the studio tempo than they ever do for the last decade etc... Even Daughter, used to be so slow, Corduroy, much more punk tempo... etc. It's just how they play them now.

Too funny!!!
I disagree that they play the songs at the exact same tempo. If you match up songs from different dates or different tours in an audio program like Pro Tools (or a free one like Audicity), the tempos fluctuate.
I wasn't saying Matt is screwing up, just saying some songs sound better faster than the studio versions, but some are too fast. If you're gonna play 30+ songs (as we all want them too), it might be easier on him to remember tempos if he starts them with a click.
So you have taken the time to match up songs from different tours and dates in audio programs, but you haven't noticed it happening like the last TEN YEARS or more??? Just wondering.
Pretty sure he can "remember tempos" ok without starting with a click. He's not helpless.
