Work out/Running songs

Need some new recommendations for a new playlist. Anyone have any favorites?

Also, live or studio?

I usually go with songs like SOLT, RVM, and Cordoroy (live) to get me through the middle of a long run. Usually start out with a slower song like Release or Of the Girl to get me warmed up. Starting to like lightning bolt! It is a very consistent and up-beat song.

I second that. In fact, except for Black Saturday and Halfway There, I like that entire album during a run.

I listened to No Code and Avocado during a half-marathon and were it not for the oppressive heat grinding me down at the end, I would've hardly noticed the miles going by with those playing.

For more non-PJ, I also really like LP1 of Physical Graffiti.

    Happy running :)
  • Is this limited to PJ songs? There have been great suggestions already, but I recently picked up KMFDM's greatest hits album (Wurst I believe it's called) and it's AWESOME to run to. As long as you like running fast anyway.

Good one. In fact I'd just go with Vs. Rearrange it so Small Town is first and then that and Indifference are the warm up/cool down bookends with sweet (mostly) face melting in between.

    Hmm....

I usually have my iPod on shuffle. The element of surprise really helps me.

I like a broad variety of music on my runs. Bach's Suites for Solo Cello are perfect for running outdoors in winter. Beethoven's 7th, my favorite piece of music, makes me feel like dancing while I run. :) But y'all won't want any of that, I suppose.

Rage Against the Machine is great running music. Foo Fighters -- Learn to Fly and Everlong both have picked me up at key moments in races (ran my best marathon with Learn to Fly playing during that last mile!).

But back to PJ. I can tell you what NOT to include: I removed Just Breathe, Speed of Sound and The End from my iPod, because they were killing my workouts. The End came on in the middle of a half-marathon and I just wanted to lie down by the side of the road and give up. So, skip those.

Beyond that, I'd say go with the songs that really speak to you. I mean, I am psyched when Love Boat Captain or Push Me Pull Me pop up mid-run, but they're not going to be right for everyone.

Betterman can be great during a run. In many ways, the Vitamin String Quartet arrangement of Betterman is even better, no kidding. Alive is great, obviously, and there are some days when I would benefit from a soundtrack of nothing but every known recording of Rearviewmirror. It's Okay can be a great mood lifter. :D

I'd also suggest a lot of the Into the Wild soundtrack -- and Better Days.

Force Of Nature ALWAYS gets me pumped doing cardio.

Oh, and the version of Porch from Osaka, Japan. That version will energize you. If it doesn't, you might as well be dead.
I died. I died and you just stood there. I died and you watched. I died and you walked by and said no. I'm dead.

After the opener (Release), there are no 'slow' songs for the remainder of the main set.

    Nobody mentioned WHIPPING yet?
I completely agree with the comments on Non-State Actor and Sonic Reducer with Dave. They have been on my list as well. SR is from the 1992 end of the year show in NY

And don't forget ALIVE and PORCH
