Jesus you don't have to be from the US to know what it is. Us Europeans do know what it is.

    Well apparently one European didn't.

He asked a question, OP wasn't being very nice (in my opinion), so I was trying to stick up for a fellow member and answer his question in a respectful manner.
The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.

  • I've invested 20 plus years in Pearl Jam......Love em...This being said. The album is for crap! PJ is just cashing checks now. If Binaural/Riot Act/Pearl Jam/Backspacer/Lightning Bolt were never made it would be fine by me. Just my opinion but the PJ of twenty years ago if they traveled to today via time machine would be sick about the effort put forth on this album. Garbage in/Garbage out!
Ok so first you said they use autune and incorrectly pointed out what you thought was autone but in reality it wasn't..

THEN you said "well it isn't autotune but it is artificial crap", meaning you still are making up excuses to blast them,

THEN after multiple pages of people saying how the "artificial crap" thing is a fallacy you just go to blasting the album.

If you don't like the album fine. But it just seems to me like you are looking for the negativity everywhere you look and that makes you a rather interesting entity on a Pearl Jam board

He can't because there is NO autotune on the record. Only effects which are used all the fucking time on albums. Theyre used on vocals, guitars, bass.... :o:o

Sirens & Penduluum both sound like they have a heavy dose of auto tune or melodyne on them to me......but to me it doesnt really matter. I'd guess its there as more of an "effect" than a corrective measure. I.e the reason its on a lot of country music today is in a lot of cases b/c it has become a vocal "sound". Ive spent a lot of hours working with melodyne and in my experience it can really strip the vocal track of the natural vibrato that is there. I hear it specifically in the high notes of sirens ......particularly the second syllable of the word "sirens" when ed goes up high. As i said, i dont care, it really doesnt matter whether they use it or not. the effect is everywhere. But i dont think its worth jumping down peoples throats simply for suggesting that its on the record. That being said, i also think the fact that the band is MAYBE (i feel its there, but i cant be 100 percent positive) using auto tune is a crazy reason to stop listening to them.

I cringe any time I hear auto tune. I hear some layered and occasionally processed vocals on LB, but no auto-tune. I've used it myself while recording but only because it's quicker to tweak a note than do another take. IMO they likely used it some, but it's not over done.

I agree. No more electronic machines! Eddie should record all vocals straight to a Victrola run by a hamster in a wheel. Sell-outs!

I just love how instead of just saying, "Oh, I guess it isn't auto-tune, nevermind" he just keeps doubling down and digging the hole further and further. It's pretty hilarious to witness.

Have you read any of the posts about the recording process of making an album? Its been explained at least 10 times.

The real question is why are you so intent on painting Ed in a negative light? Or are you just trying to get a rise out of certain fans/members? I dont get it. Its one thing to have a different opinion and discussion of something you dont like about the vocals but you just seem to want to bring nothing but negativity to the table.

i think this is the common misunderstanding on this thread. A lot of people here seem to see the word "auto tune" and expect that cher / tpain effect. For those who legitimately dont know whats being referred to look up michael buble or tim mcgraw videos on youtube for extreme examples. Whats being discussed here is the sterile / somewhat robotic melodyne or autotune (two competing software pitch correction software plugins) effect that is pretty apparent on SOME (i dont hear it on all) of the tracks on lightning bolt.

  • Yes, I don't mind experimentation but for me the albums production is so far removed from how Pearl Jam had captured me and others with what was a truer sound less polished.

The very thing I expect to find to find when I attend a PJ show is missing from this LB album.....

    1) Spontenaety..................this album could have been call Backspacer Part Deux
    2) Power, Energy, Strength....much of this album lyrically sounds scared, weak, frail
    3) Self mockery.................part of the appeal has always been the self deprecation of Ed
    4) Drunkeness...................maybe Eddie was completly sober at the sessions for this album?
    5) Crowd Interaction...........could be the producer to blame for this. We bring the best out of the band!

In regards to number two, I call BS. Ed's lyrics have always contained a lot of introspection and frailness, nothing new there.

When has PJ really ever had an unpolished sound? Vitalogy and Riot Act are a little raw in places, but the majority of their work has an obvious production sheen to it.

I'm surprised how many people are actually defending Es using pitch correction. Is it the worst thing in the world? Definitely not, but that's a different response than I would've anticipated. I'm sure more bands than ever are using auto tune for fixes, but I don't buy it's on every album we hear.

When I first heard the part the OP is referring to in Pendulum, I too wondered if it was autotune. After listening to the CD at home on my Harmon Kardon receiver and Definitive Technology speakers, it clearly is the layering of another voice track and then added reverb.
