Really? What makes you cringe?
Gems and rhinestones and Future Days among others.october22 wrote:Maynard is without a doubt extremely solid. Save for some stuff on Opiate but that doesn't really count. I would also argue Thom Yorke.
The thing about Maynard, for me, is he writes about things so foreign to rock music and in such an interesting unique way he's hard to top, but he can also go for the throat/heart with something really deep and heavy.0 -

Fine. Though I would disagree with 3 or 4, I would also add Tom Waits and Zack de la Rocha in there.
Tom Waits is in a league of his own. There's good songwriters, great songwriters, then Tom Waits.0 -

Absolutely. 10,000 especially to that point. And the first APC record. I'm leaving Puscifer out of this discussion.0 -

From an Australian review of LB:
"So if you are a diehard fan and you’ve skipped to the end of this review, the answer is no, the album doesn’t have a song as haunting as 'Indifference' or 'Immortality' on it. It doesn’t have a call to arms sing-along like 'Not For You' or 'Breath'. If you’re after a genius Eddie Vedder in the 21st century, get yourself a copy of the soundtrack for Into The Wild and move along quietly. Pearl Jam has aged gracefully, but there comes to a point when even the graceful ones might wonder what they have left to offer. The list would take too much of my time. But I will throw Neko Case into the mix.

I am not a lyrics guy but I surely love some lyrics from old-school PJ songs like Evenflow, Given to Fly and Breakerfall. Those lyrics make these perfect songs uber-perfect, IMO.What's your part, who you are?

I've always loved that line. I was a media major in college and this line always struck a chord with me. Advertising fucking bullshit.

Ghost was an Ed/Jeff co-write. And, though I don't know for certain, I would bet my life saving the "soap" line came from Ed.everybody wants the most they can possibly get

I feel like the purpose of this thread got totally jacked, by the way.
Also, I think Backspacer gets too much crap from a lyrical standpoint. I think there are some standout moments on that record. Poetically speaking, there's nothing wrong with gems and rhinestones. It's an imagery thing. He's talking about stars.
Anyway, I'd add a masterful Ed line to the thread, but there are just too many. Can I just say "every single word of Getaway?"everybody wants the most they can possibly get

Fixed. Seriously. I love BS and will never say a bad word about any of it but LB lyrics have that multi layered, head shaking in wonder, stop-your-car-in-the-street-to-listen quality that I've been craving. I would name specific songs but they all do this to me at some point just from a poetic, lyrical stand point. I'm blown away5/3/92 Omaha, NE
