Sleeping By Myself vs Soon Forget

SBM was a uke song turned into a full band recording, while Soon Forget was put on Binaural simply with EV and a uke.

Why are so many people complaining about SBM, yet there are those who say Binaural is perfect? Is it because SBM was already released?

I prefer to have a solo song turned into a full band affair, rather than include a never before heard solo track.

I think most people will be ok with it once they hear it but their first reaction was space on the new album could have been used for a new song instead of one we have already
  • soon forget fit into binaural thematically and it was the first time ed or the band publicly ventured into that territory.

Most indication are that SBM will be a wild card of the album, in that it will feel like an add-on, out of place in regards to the rest of the songs.
And so you see, I have come to doubt

I don't think Binaural was perfect and still think Soon Forget works better at Ed solo shows. Was not the biggest fan of SBM on the Uke songs record, so I am not sure if I will like the full band version any better. And I think there were better songs on the Uke album also they could have chose. Or better Into the Wild songs too.

To me it's because it was already released. Kind of like they didn't have any other ideas so they had to scramble for filler....which I know isn't the case.

I've learned though that every song doesn't have to appeal to me....I'll skip what I don't prefer and play the shit out of the songs that hit me.

  • "Sleeping By Myself" is one of my favorite tracks on Uke Songs. That said, I'm nervous that the song will be massacred a'la "Speed of Sound." I loved the EV solo version of "Speed of Sound," but I thought the final version on Backspacer was a mess. In fact, I find it barely listenable. The drums, the overproduction, the lasers. Blah. Gross. Simpler is usually better. Wish Brendan would take note.

My fear was reading it sounded "folky" and similar to Mumford & Sons.
"There's a $10,000 bill in it for you."
"Oh yeah? Which president's on it?"
"Uh, all of them. They're having a party. Jimmy Carter's passed out on the couch."

SBM is a great song. I like it far better than soon forget. I think a lot of people disregard Uke Songs album because its a full Uke album, but it's actually very good with soon real gems on there.

First of all it's not one of my favorites from the uke album, probably not even top 5. And I was actually excited when I first heard it would be on the album but I was hoping for some major changes in it from the other members of the band but the reviews seem to think that it's basically the same.

I've never listened to the uke album so I'm not sure what to expect with this song.

if by disregard you mean listened to the track previews on itunes and then moved on with my life you can count me in.

  • Personally, I feel "Without You" would have been a much better Uke Songs selection for the "full band treatment" but I'm reserving final judgement until I hear the album.
I'm actually a lot more disappointed that "Of the Earth" isn't on the album than SBM's inclusion.

Natalie Maines already did a full-band version of Without You on her new album, which is all covers. If Pearl Jam did it, it would almost feel like a cover of a cover, even though the guy who wrote the song is in the band.
