I havent listened to it yet...but, is it really a 'pop song.'
Im just baffled when I hear this description of anything Pearl Jam. When I think 'pop song,' I think Lady Gaga, autotune, and electronic sounds for instruments. Am I wrong here?
It is clearly in the same genre as Bon Jovi. So I guess the question is if Bon Jovi is considered pop.
First off...I really am starting to think I listened to a different tune than everybody else. The song leaks...some say "oh the next Black" "great tune". I didn't believe it and felt I'd judge for myself when I hear it.
It's released and people are going fucking gaga for this song. My first thought "this sounds like Collective Soul". A few more listens and it's not really getting any better.
I don't hate the tune, but it's nowhere near the level of greatness people are putting it at. Greater than Alive?
I agree. I REALY wanted Sirens to be the epic song that everyone is saying it is but to me it's just an OK tune. And when I compare it to the rest of what PJ has released, it falls to the bottom of the list.
I listen to Present Tense and wonder where people are coming from thinking Sirens is the greatest in the catalogue. I can't get there.

It's not Pjs responsibility to take our orders and sonically fill or decorate our lives though.
Bad mouthing a song or piece of any art is pointless. 'This is shit' etc
It's not any bands job to write songs for where you are in your life. It's down to you to see if you're up to speed with where they are. And hopefully you are. And if you're not that's cool. Sometimes albums only make sense to you years and years later.
This is the most polarising song in Pj history. Be interesting to see where we all are in a year.
This is so true!
I personally have never not liked any PJ song this much. Unless 80% of it is changed live I doubt I ever will. I know they are primarily an incredible live band and EVERY song sounds amazingly better live but I don't see them changing 80% of a song.
They are artists and I respect them for ALWAYS doing as they choose. They have been spot on 99.99% of the time for me up until 2 days ago.
I can just imagine ED live now saying something like..." I know a lot of you may not like this song but FUCK YOU we're playing it " lol
What the majority of the posters on this board need to realize is....not everyone has to like every song and arguing with someone about not liking it isn't going to miraculously make them like it. Different Strokes for different folks. We are all individuals. None of us in our heart of hearts wants to hate a PJ song but none of us are willing to lie to ourselves or convince ourselves we like it, just because it's our great PJ. We are on this board because we all LOVE PJ
For me it's not because it's Bon Jovi -ish
If it was good sounding I'd like it. I like some whack stuff ya'll would laugh at. I actually like Last Kiss
Country music I must admit is my most disliked genre. Country twang can get me ill. If I'm really drunk at a bar and country music comes on I feel like I am gonna puke and have to go outside to get air. This also happens to me with dance beat music. Years ago there was this 4 non blondes remix they used to play at all the bars and that one would mess me up quick!
This song has some of that country twang in it also so that could be why I don't like it at all. I don't see them changing that. I hope I haven't had many beers before they play this at a show I probably should carry a few plastic bags in my pocket, just in case. I don't wanna be known as the next Boston Puker or the Sirens puker Seriously though, it's not that country thick so I doubt I'll have issues.
Anyways...I hope everyone calms down and can just respect the opinions of others without bashing them about it one way or the other.
If you love it...be happy you have a great new song to listen to.
I can't wait to hear more of the new songs...hurry up already!!!
Oh dear dad
Can you see me now

Like you somehow

With Sirens, Pearl jam have just written a bigger anthem than their flagship anthem 'Alive'
Thoughts?
Serious debate, serious answer. I don't think so. (And I like Sirens.) I think that Alive was more accesable than Sirens is. The structure of the song, the dark theme, the way that the song is mainly build on its vocal lines with the music supporting it, makes it a complete diff song than Alive. Not to mention that Alive came during a period where there was a need for new music and that it truly represented a set of disgrunted youngsters who felt exactly like Alive. The song became, undesigned I believe, a representation of a generation.
Even though Sirens also represents a certain moment in life, their fanbase has changed drastically. There are many young fans here (and this is not in anyway meant patronizing), who are simply not at the same place where PJ is. (And I applaud the band for representing their lives instead of buying into pleasing the crowd.) So even by design this song will not have the same impact. 1) the theme will not be something everybody can have a connection with and will therefore not generate the nostalgia that Alive has created for itself, 2) the structure of the song is not as stronlgy riffed based as Alive was and is - even though some consider it "radio friendly" - not that accessable.
I do not think that Sirens, like some seem to imply, was written to write a "top 40" song. The theme is too dark and the structure and instruments of the song too interconnected. It is a slow burner instead of an instant hit.

I think if more of the Sirens "haters" expressed themselves in this way, we'd all be better off. There's a difference between "I just don't like this song" and "I don't like this song and you people are all idiots if you do." There's a horrible smugness to a lot of the critical posts that, frankly, is uncalled for.
Everyone is allowed to have an opinion. Just be civil about it, ya know?
everybody wants the most they can possibly get
for the least they could possibly do
as i said,Alive is so unique, nothing cant replace it..+ its there 23 years..
but some still are in denial to understand the dynamic of Sirens...
you will not fuckin believe it what will be the reaction of the crowd at Pittsburgh where i guess will be the first time will be played live....you will not fuckin believe it..
"...Dimitri...He talks to me...'.."The Ghost of Greece..".
"..That's One Happy Fuckin Ghost.."
“..That came up on the Pillow Case...This is for the Greek, With Our Apologies.....”

Are you serious???? People are in denial? Not everyone has to like every Pearl Jam song. If people don't like a certain song but you love it that is ok but please stop trying to get everyone to think its an amazing song. Saying people are in denial is just silly and over the top.

you are reading -be part in the same social media as im..its so easy to see what i said..
"...Dimitri...He talks to me...'.."The Ghost of Greece..".
"..That's One Happy Fuckin Ghost.."
“..That came up on the Pillow Case...This is for the Greek, With Our Apologies.....”
No fucking way...Alive has it all. The riff, the lyrics, the monster chorus, amazing solo. The best they can hope for with Sirens is maybe a single that charts well.
I can name at least 40 songs better than Sirens, so I don't get all this Sirens talk
you cant imagine the mad love at social media for the song...itunes sales worldwide etc...
and after played live???
the river has one direction.....to the top..
"...Dimitri...He talks to me...'.."The Ghost of Greece..".
"..That's One Happy Fuckin Ghost.."
“..That came up on the Pillow Case...This is for the Greek, With Our Apologies.....”
I really hope but kinda doubt mccreadys solo extends a few more bars during the live performances, I hope they had hi cut the solo a little short so the song wouldn't be crazy long and unplayable on the radio
Pearl jam are like hobbits I guess.
You can learn all their ways in a week, and even after 100 years, they can still surprise you.
Theres a bell hidden somewhere deep inside me, that i often forget i have because its a rare thing that comes along to make it sing. But this song. Even after a week or whatever it is. Made that bell ring like its Christmas and a host of angels are getting their wings.
Just makes me want to sing along and show love.
I wish all the people who don't 'get it' or are hating on it, constructively or otherwise, could feel it this way, just once.
People have been saying they're quitting Pj etc etc.
I think it's all about to get really really good from here and further down the road.
And yes, this proves Guinness is a far romantic, hug the world drink than wine ever could hope to be:)
nice one
and again, the song get even more love after 11 days...
"...Dimitri...He talks to me...'.."The Ghost of Greece..".
"..That's One Happy Fuckin Ghost.."

hey now, we are talking about completely time periods here. i don't get all this comparing. i guess it is human nature and all but there has to be a better conversation to be had.
Sirens could very well be the anthem for where they are at today...no doubt...it is simply a beautiful composition

It's all a matter of opinions no ? and it's music it's not gonna make or change my life in anyway shape or form that allready happened with the 1st time hearing Release , as for these new songs i like all new material it's refreshing to hear it and i trust this band hell i've been with them for 20 solid yrs i'm happy with where they are as a band ....
I agree with josevolution ... some people are moved by this song, some never will be. I think it's a great song, and I trust this band, because they've never disappointed me in 20 years and I don't expect them to now. I think this will be a really, really good album and it will add a dozen or more songs to what is an incredible catalog. It will be awesome to see them having fun playing this new material! Can't wait for Brooklyn on the 18th, and for someone to come through with a pair for me for the 19th, and see you in Philly on the 22nd!!
I was alone and far away when I heard the band start playing!
...I was always a DeadHead, but when I first heard Winston Rodney, aka the Burning Spear, sing, I became a SpearHead too!
hey now, we are talking about completely time periods here. i don't get all this comparing. i guess it is human nature and all but there has to be a better conversation to be had.
Sirens could very well be the anthem for where they are at today...no doubt...it is simply a beautiful composition
This was kind of my point.
Right now there are tons of young people hearing Sirens and Pearl jam possibly for the first time.
This song could be a huge new window and world for them.
Imagine you had just discovered Pj today after having heard this song?
This, THIS, would be your song. Nothing else would matter. Then you'd go and buy all the records, but you never ever leave or replace the song that brought you in. (State of love and trust on unplugged in my case). It will always hold a special place in your heart.
That's why I find all the hating so confusing but understandable.
We're about to have our favourite band stolen from us by a whole new crowd. It's up to us to be cool with that and go with it.
My thought is that there is no debate. Sirens is not half as good as Alive. I've heard Sirens on the radio once. Alive is still played more on the radio over Sirens 20 years later.
Comments
It is clearly in the same genre as Bon Jovi. So I guess the question is if Bon Jovi is considered pop.
I listen to Present Tense and wonder where people are coming from thinking Sirens is the greatest in the catalogue. I can't get there.
oh no! :fp:
Well, I did buy a Bon Jovi cassette once.
yeah im kinda here too.
sirens is a top top song to me, one that is entrenched in my nut already
But
Alive is a 22 year old anthem that has stood the test of 22 years and still sounds fresh....
I mean Sirens might be but I don't think its possible to say that yet
