A matter for serious thought and debate

I played the song for my fellow office worker who summed it up as an ok song, nothing noteworthy, but good background music. Sounds about right to me. Putting this song in the same category as Alive is just unreal.0

It's importance to the bands history and subculture aside, musically alive is viewed as a plodding supremely derivative mongrel of many breeds by a lot of serious music fans/historians.
(Not my view by the way I love the song)
But the argument is there. Would you rather have something that makes you feel something as opposed to mere 'fuck yeah!' And fist pumping?
I know I would.0 -
That sounded cranky and I didn't mean it to.

When it comes to a song being "epic" context matters. Alive came out during a cultural and musical revolution. It's hard to top that time and space.
Paul McCartney could write the best song of his life tomorrow, but it still wouldn't surpass Yesterdays in the mainstream public consciousness.
Sirens is not just a good song, it's a great song. But in 2013, it's not going to be a massive mainstream hit. I'd be shocked if I hear it on the radio one time where I live. That says more about radio than it does about the song, but that's pretty much my point.everybody wants the most they can possibly get
for the least they could possibly do0 -
No. Alive has stood the test of time for 23 years. It still, to this day, is the most powerful song played at any Pearl Jam show, to old, new, casual and die hard fans.
It's literally their musical icon.-Chris

A reviewer is only a reviewer. It’s only so much fodder, fuel, food for thought.
Aren’t we lucky to know that good art is always flawed?
> Leonardo da Vinci painted an uneven horizon behind La Giaconda.
> Jimmy Page’s wailing guitar was far from perfected on Led Zeppelin I.
> Dante’s Inferno was a commentary on Italian politics.
> Hieronymus Bosch’s paintings, deemed heretic works, were warnings to man.
> Shakespeare was foremost an actor/playwright, not a scholar.
> Venus de Milo in her perfect beauty has no arms.
> The Beatles left in controversial laughs, coughs and comments.
(All that from the great Gerbean99)
I remember in the not-so-distant past that No Code was written off as complete rubbish, an experiment gone wrong, never would be a classic, too weird for mainstream, one spin and done, never sell enough to make it worth producing....y'all remember don't you? Yeah.
On the 2nd day of release there's no way to predict with any accuracy where Sirens will go. You could be right, or you could be dead wrong. Only time will tell.2003 Dallas

Alive makes me feel something every time I hear it. and not just nostalgia. sirens literally does nothing for me. and it's not a "old pj vs new pj" thing either. Just Breathe, I thought, was light years better than Sirens. Amongst The Waves as well. And all of Uke Songs. Simply, Sirens to me is just "meh".Gimli 1993

I remember saying the exact same thing to this board when Backspacer was first released; remembering all the hate that was spewed at the band for No Code sucking. But now it's at the top of the list for many a die hard. Even I remember passing it over many times to listen to something else. I've loved it for many years now, but I didn't at first. I really think that any album the band makes can do that for anyone, given enough time and context.
I wasn't the biggest fan of Backspacer when it first came out, but now I actually choose that over any of the band's albums on occasion. I think VS will always be my fave though. I LOVE Ten, but musically, I love VS's intensity. Second to none. I could listen to Blood all day on repeat.Gimli 1993

It's not Pjs responsibility to take our orders and sonically fill or decorate our lives though.
Bad mouthing a song or piece of any art is pointless. 'This is shit' etc
It's not any bands job to write songs for where you are in your life. It's down to you to see if you're up to speed with where they are. And hopefully you are. And if you're not that's cool. Sometimes albums only make sense to you years and years later.
This is the most polarising song in Pj history. Be interesting to see where we all are in a year.0 -

but Alive is one of the greatest anthems in rock history.
Very well said, and I'll top that. Alive is an era-defining moment, song of a generation. Few songs reach that kind of status so it is very special.
Sirens is a great song. And I dont find it cheezy, at all. Not even a catchy melody there. As Dimi said, no need to compare it to anything. What's your part, who you are?

From beginning to end and throughout, 'Sirens' is just one massive cliché.
Will it become bigger than Alive? Not a chance. Sirens is the next setlist killer IMO, like an Inside Job for example (which I don't think kills a set but I know plenty who do).2000: Manchester

First off...I really am starting to think I listened to a different tune than everybody else. The song leaks...some say "oh the next Black" "great tune". I didn't believe it and felt I'd judge for myself when I hear it.
It's released and people are going fucking gaga for this song. My first thought "this sounds like Collective Soul". A few more listens and it's not really getting any better.
I don't hate the tune, but it's nowhere near the level of greatness people are putting it at. Greater than Alive? The shit people are smoking has got to be the best shit this world has ever seen. But to be fair...I was 17 when Alive came out and I went gaga for that...maybe the 17 year olds of today love this tune.PJ-Cubs wrote:I think the better question is:

Even Flow has never been a "piss tune" for me (who the fuck leaves when Mike is about to rip shit up?). In fact I'd never piss during a PJ show...when I hear the sirens, I will empty the bladder. And no, Mike doesn't rip shit up on Sirens.
Again, not a bad tune. I just don't see how people have this as the greatest song ever written.I've met Rob

It might be that people have consistently ignored and put down pop music, and now they've discovered they love pop music because their favorite band released one. They aren't used to that feeling.
"Oh my, the lyrics are stuck in my head." "I've listened to this song 30 times in a row." - It is called pop music folks, that is what it does to you. It is science. I'm not saying it is a bad tune, but it is a pop song and if you give pop songs a chance they will get stuck in your head. Now the question will be for how long.
This actually may bug me the most about Sirens. Fans on here bash bands like Bon Jovi, Dave Matthews, and U2 for being radio friendly, but the second PJ does it they are amazing and the only band that can pull off a sincere pop song.Post edited by bootlegger10 on0
