He likes to add a layer of cheese to everything he touches these days and is rather full of himself.

    Ha, agree as well.
I've been fortunate enough to see Pearl Jam live.

Seriously. The band obviously has a say in these cheese decisions, but I'm guessing they originate with O'Brien. Even the songs that aren't inherently cheesy seem over-produced and over-polished. I really like a lot of songs they've put out recently, but the production is always a little over the top for my taste. Mind Your Manners is a good example of this. I really dig the song and the performances on the track are great, but the vocals are super processed compared to the punkier songs on an album like Vitalogy or even the punky songs on S/T.

I just can't figure out why the band is making these decisions. Do they actually like production that sounds like this or are they trying to appeal to more mainstream radio audiences? For a band that recently had Ten remixed because it was too glossy and overproduced, they seem to be really going for the radio friendly sound here. I miss the production quality of albums like Yield and Riot Act. However, with all that said, I'm still enjoying the vast majority of Pearl Jam's output.

The production aside the path he is leading them on is not good. Can't mention much but I have a "feeling" this album is going to be super cheesy. The 80s called and want their guitar riffs back. :fp:

Sounds like he also pushed them to do the Uke song. :nono:

All in all I think they can do better without him. Get another producer next time.

    Five words...

    Danny Elfman Oompa Loompa Effects

    Lightning Bolt

Not sure I remember a PJ song with sound effects?

Still a excellent song in my opinion.

I really think you're laying the blame at the wrong feet. PJ decides what their albums sound like. I also think people are looking for a reason when they don't like the songs, when it's usually as simple as the song is not to their liking. I can't really think of a song that is completely ruined by production.

I wonder, did people complain so much when they heard the slick production of Yield?

Lets not act like PJ has ever had that raw of a sound for their albums.

It sucks because on one hand he had a helping hand in some of PJs best work. But I now I fear he has become completely affected by the music business. When PJ started they defined the sound and music of a generation. There was really nothing quite like it and many other bands that came after tried to emulate it. Every record PJ released continued to break new ground. Now it seems to be moving slightly the other way, and I while I don't have any concrete proof I feel BOB has had too much of the wrong influence in this shift.

While I haven't heard the song yet, his comments around the inclusion of Sleeping By Myself alone seem to indicate that he definitely has some influence in the artistic direction. He said he thought it could really be a radio hit, and those who have heard it described it as having a Mumford and Sons vibe. That is the definition of being affected as there are countless bands and artists trying to emulate the Mumford and Sons sound. Leave that shit to them. Chart new territory. The second someone says "this sounds like a radio hit" it should be cause for alarm because what's on the radio right now is shit. I don't begrudge PJ success on the radio, but don't try to just fit the mold. Try to re-define it.
