I just listened to this yesterday. I was at the show. I know it gets a lot of praise, but for some reason, even though I loved the show, I never truly recognized HOW great this show was. This show is LEGIT. Band was tight and setlist was off the hook. Man, when I heard it I instantly remembered how HOT it was that night. If you were there you know!0 -

Listening to a lot of the 2006 World Tour of late (last 6 months). Am getting the impression the Aussie gigs were real special - saw them night one at Adelaide - which was probably the best I've ever seen any band play. The Preternatural The Other Plane fan-made compilation of the Aussie gigs is very good. For fans of Long Road - listen to the set opener from Detroit 22-May-2006 - best version ever in IMHO. Also listening to some later gigs from 2009 (last night Philly) & 2011 (Toronto)0

The opening 3 song combo (Small Town-Corduroy-Do the Evolution) works really well, and all three are solid energetic takes. At this location too, Small Town does truly work as an opener. The first critique that I noticed at this gig was a slightly "off" sounding Severed Hand. There simply isn't enough guitars in the mix after the intro and compared to many other shows, the tempo feels almost sluggish. A few other problems are quite noticeable. Stone misses the intro and first verse in State of Love and Trust. Clearly something is very off and wrong with the guitar work in Ghost. It sounds so empty and is a mood killer. One of my favorite tunes, played well in the 2003 bootlegs, but it sounds very unrehearsed here. Adding to that is Know Your Rights, which the band barely seems to make it through. They get off time badly in a few spots. It's weird, the version in Atlanta around a week prior was incredibly tight. Although the 1st encore is quite good and sets a better tone for the show, I found the second encore very much lacking. Life Wasted is sloppy and I've never been a fan of the singer for Mudhoney doing vocals on Kick Out the Jams.
I've listened to this boot a few times over the last year and all the errors in the main set almost kill it for me. It does have a good sense of energy in most of the songs though and the opening is certainly the best part for me. Also, much like the Atlanta 12 mix, Matt's drums sound wonderful. They didn't sound quite like that on any of the other 2012 boots (including Deluna), not that those mixes were bad. His snare drum is so piercing and bright on these two boots, but with the right amount of depth. Anyways, I feel this is a fairly overrated boot. It's solid, but unremarkable to me. I have a feeling I'm about to be trashed for saying that. :?
Interesting and as always insightful review my friend. I myself found this one to be one of my more favorite boots of 2012 and is certainly better than the Amsterdam boots and both of the Berlin 2012 boots in my opinion. I toally agree that Elderly Woman is my least favorite show opener, but it works extremely well at this show and sounds great. The first opening songs you mentioned are a fantastic start to this show, and I'm not even a big fan of DTE. The first encore with the first 4 or 5 acoustic numbers with the band sitting down are sublime.
This is just another example stellar sound and mix quality of the 2012 boots. I do agree though, as I feel this is one of the better boots of 2012 and I think is better than the hyped Amsterdam and Berlin shows, I don't think this necessarily garnishes the award of "instant classic". A very good boot in my opinion, though.Bristow, VA - 5.13.10

Lets be honest here, the only reason it received the "instant classic" label was because it was part of the fund raising effort for the Tester campaign. Put a unique label on any boot and its gonna generate more than normal interest and sales.Pittsburgh 1998 • Pittsburgh 2006 • 2012 Isle Of Wight Festival • 2012 Made In America Festival • Baltimore 2013 • Seattle 2013

Exactly. I think we can expect the so-called "instant classic" series to fall by the way side after that.Bristow, VA - 5.13.10
