can anyone tell me in la if this is a close drive? i been to la 2x, i think it less than 10 miles from each other? is this drive ok to take a few hours before the show, or is the traffic very bad and take a long time to get from one place to another? just wondering because commerce casino has a very nice hotel in it that is not ridiculous price, id rather stay there than what other people say to stay downtown, but is the drive ok from commerce to la sports arena?

The Sports Arena is on the same grounds as the Coliseum where USC plays football. It's not as bad as people make it out to be (or maybe just not to me since I'm a native). There are some nice hotels on the LA Live campus and around it in the heart of downtown. LA Live is the area across from Staples Center which is 2.5-3 miles straight up Figueroa from the Sports Arena.
The Commerce Casino is a couple exits up the 5 freeway from me. On a good day, I can get to the Sports Arena in 20-30 minutes. Not sure what cab rates would work out to but there'll be traffic heading into LA. It's the opening weekend of the LA Auto Show and there's just traffic going anywhere in LA really. Would definitely stay closer if you're planning on cabbing it.
In heavy traffic, this estimator gives a rate of around $40 each way:

Sports Arena is on the north end of "south-central". As you go south and east, it gets worse. The area is somewhat of an island in not the best area. The Sports Arena is connected to the Coliseum. Just across the lawn to the north, the California Science center and Natural history museum. To the north of that, the LA rose garden. Across Exposition to the north is USC. I would call all of what I just described to be an island. Outside the perimeter, I'd generally say it is safe at daytime, be cautious at night. North of there is Staples/LA-Live, and then downtown.
As for the really rough areas, I'd say they are south and east. For example, between the 710 and 110 freeways, along Century and Imperial Highway. For example, I would only take Imperial Highway between the 710 and 110 if I were in that modified car they use in "Storm Chasers". If you've been across the GW Bridge from Jersey into Bronx, that area to the South and East is like that.
