Atlanta '94 - Really like when the base line comes in at the end of the jam.
MTV unplugged - great intensity
Yeah, I just re-listened to the Atlanta one and the bass line is ferocious! Jeff's hands must have been tore up after that!
3/29/94 is a comparable version. I actually prefer it...but there is absolutely no denying the greatness of Atlanta 4/3/94. Also acceptable is 4/2/94 Atlanta...the night before is a stellar version too.
i thought that too, about daylight version, sure the vibe is different

Pinkpop '92. Besides the infamous jump from Ed, I totally dig the jam that the rest of them play during said jump. Plus it's hard to beat the intensity that the band had during '92.

Porch in particular was a great song already with Krusen.
When Abbruzzese was asked to join the band, he added speed, agility, tightness, dynamics, clarity and funk to every song. Some songs benefited more than others. Porch benefited most of all. Abbruzzese turned the drums from something just there keeping beat into something that added to the song more dramatically. Porch became an AMAZING song with how Abbruzzese played it. PJ's live shows became legendary during his tenure, due in significant part to the rocket-fuel playing he had. Here's an overhead shot of Abbruzzese playing Porch. Sound is horrible, but just watch and lower your speakers so you don't hear the overloaded videotape compression sound: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPGiwRfGGkU
(Since Live VS Studio is an apples to oranges game, to see how Abbruzzese added to PJ's sound, listen to Evenflow Studio w/Abbruzzese vs Evenflow Studio w/Krusen. This illustrates Abbruzzese's contributions pretty clearly )
When Irons was asked to replace Abbruzzese, Irons had a very loose style of playing. It was very similar to how Krusen played, maybe even looser overall. All the technicality that Abbruzzese added was stripped from the song. The drums, especially during the jam, seem to my ears very rudimentary. So, while Porch is so good that it would sound good with or without drums at all, Irons' version reverted to the Krusen era, though I think the rest of the band probably got better at jamming on it with Irons than Krusen, so it probably sounded better overall with Irons than Krusen.
When Cameron was asked to replace Irons, he plays much "dry-er" than Irons or Abbruzzese, and ultimately with different beat, so while one extreme is Abbruzzese with a "wetter" feel with cymbals and tight funky fills on the high hat and ride, Cameron is basically the opposite, playing very very few cymbals at all, and cramming in tom fills. To me, it sounds like a cover band, given the significant change in drumming.
So, here is just a grouping of different Porches over the years (sans Chamberlain). It's best to give a listen to all of them all the way thru to hear the dramatic difference:
My preference is for the pure fury and technicality that only Abbruzzese was able to play, but most of PJ's early music is so good that it would sound good with a toy monkey on drums.

There are 2 songs that come to mind as almost universally better from 92-94 than from 95 on:
Porch
Blood
With a caveat: Some 95 versions of both songs are amazing. Blood in 95 would have some all timer versions if Eddie's voice hadn't blown out after the Australian tour. See San Jose 95 for an example: that version of Blood would be #1 of all time if Eddie's voice sounded like it did in 93/94.

I'm not drummer picky by any means, but one song has always stood out to me as being better early.

along with Sonic Reducer.
Both songs need an angry Ed. Like Blood and Porch
These are all songs that I used to obsess with on their bootlegs in 1992 when I was drumming in high school with bands.
Pretty much all their early stuff, but definitely SOLAT.
Actually, I was so desperate to hear SOLAT played correctly that I wanted to play it with them, so I chucked 20 white frisbee style signs at Ed saying "May I Play Drums With You" from the front row in '98 right after they hired Matt.... and this occurred:
(Note: this was also during the first "Breath" sign campaign, before msg, and I'm pretty sure before MC knew the song, so he's also addressing those sign holders. NJ almost was the place Breath was brought back!)

Ran across this while checking out some of the YouTube live clips .Kinda blew me away when the kid does the lead and the chorus all sings.Check it out.I think you'll enjoy it.sorry to be slightly off topic.
Missing from this is the speech beforehand where Ed talks about a local serial killer who was found guilty, and saying how he thinks they should publicly hang people like that. It's priceless, but it also puts the "HANG EM!" part of the jam into perspective.

3/29/94. Superior to Atlanta and it features a great Ed speech right before. Top 5 show of all time imo and some of Dave A's finest drumming.
"What can you expect when you're on top? You know? It's like Napoleon. When he was the king, you know, people were just constantly trying to conquer him, you know, in the Roman Empire. So, it's history repeating itself all over again."
not a fan of the slow porch intro the band has been playing the past several years. tempo doesnt work with the rest of the song for me.
one of the best versions of porch comes from melbourne 95. ed prefaces porch with the infamous NW speech, great extended jam where the band really sounds insync, and ed sings during the jam.
I agree with you about not being a fan of the slow intro. I'd much rather here Ed do a quick count and then get right into it. Maybe we'll get some old school Porch at the Home shows this year! (One can only hope.....)
