Pearl Jam: still modern rock?
My local radio station has a 15 minute discussion about music almost every morning in between times that they play music and do the local news. Anyways, the discussions usually have to do with recent albums, band tours, or the impact of certain bands. Well the discussion today was whether bands from the 90's are still considered modern rock or should they start being held as classic rock artists. And that got me thinking about what Pearl Jam is now.
They're over 20 years old, so do you think that they're modern or classic rock?
I still consider them modern.

are they still writing relevant music or have they resorted to playing local fairs and casinos with a greatest hits set?
ModernNone are more hopelessly enslaved than those who falsely believe that they are free.

Well Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Neil Young, and Grateful Dead are all considered classic rock yet they aren't doing greatest hit sets and playing casinos. Unless of course we're only talking about bands from the 90s.Caveeze wrote:are they still writing relevant music or have they resorted to playing local fairs and casinos with a greatest hits set?

I think those distinctions are really more a matter of radio format. PJ and their contemporaries will forever define that format, but like the great classic rock bands they transcend that distinction and belong in a class of timeless bands. Modern or active rock could be the last successful radio genre... but that format will continue to shift to include more 90s rock.
As for still writing important music, that's more a testament to how they've gotten along for 20 years.Wachovia 05 -- Irving Plaza 06 -- East Rutherford II 06 -- The Vic 07 -- Lollapalooza 07 -- Camden I,II 08 -- D.C. 08 -- MSG I,II 08 -- Chicago I,II 09, Spectrum II,III,IV 09 -- SNL 2010 -- Cleavland 2010 -- MSG I 20100 -

Personally, I think their longevity is the craziest..
how many bands of this age (band age) still have all the core members, still tour, still release good music...
22 years guys!! Pink Floyd din't last that long (as a unit)
Led Zeppelin didn't
Rolling stones.. eh. er. kind of.. not the original cast on stage now-a-days though (tragically)
american bands? I am struggling for one..
ZZ TOP!! ZZ TOP have been around forever and still have all original members !!None are more hopelessly enslaved than those who falsely believe that they are free.

U2 is the obivous one
Same lineup with the 70s and they can sell out venues bigger than most other artists. Foo Fighters are probably the closest American band. PJ has about 4-5 years on them. Allthough Technically the Foo Fighters first album is Dave Grohl.. that bands got legs and stamina.
As for PJ being classic rock. I've heard their earlier works played on classic rock stations now so I think they've been around long enough that their older work is considered classic.
I guess they could be considered modern rock as well since they still pump out album. Then again Kiss still pumps out albums but I don't consider them modern.
If I really think hard I think modern rock actually sucks. I consider it to be most rock bands formed after the Foo Fighters..... generic, protools washed, corporate sounding crap. I don't really lump Pearl Jam in with that.0 -
20 years have passed. Pearl Jam is classic rock! Plus they are begat from classic rock. That is not a bad thing.Ed: 2011-07-09 2012-11-04

Our classic rock station here in Seattle does not play Pearl Jam (102.5). They are still modern rock, even though I believe they are straddling the line between modern and classic rock.Member Number: 437xxx

On Sirus /XM PJ is played on 4 stations with various formats.
PJ radio-Duh
Octane-Modern Heavy Rock
Lithium-90s alt
Sixx Sense- new/classic straight forward rock station
Octane surprised me a ill ,but PJ,SG,STP,AIC all in resurgence in regular rotation.PJ even ranking amongst the"big unz" list of top songs. This station who is primarily your Five finger Death Punch,Shinedown,Sevendust,In This Moment type of metal/Mod rock appeals to a younger demographic and I think it is opening up PJ to a younger mainstream rock crowd.Old 10clubbers may want to watch out in a Ga pit in the near future some young blood may be moving in.This albumn cycle could bring a new wave /generation of fresh blood.0 -
A 17 year old rolled of in front of my office 2days ago to drop something off.MYM was pumping out a very loud system in her car.I did the same to Jamie cryin and round and round so I think it's pretty modern.0

I said they were classic rock back in '93 when people were throwing around "grunge" and "alternative". My opinion was that they were just a "classic" rock band. Guitars, bass, drums and no fucking around.I've met Rob

It's played on classic rock here, ten and vs anyway.
I feel the first couple of albums are classic rock but their new stuff is moderns.
They are not a classic rock band as they are still making new stuff, but their early stuff is over 20 years old so it's hard to argue that it's not classic rock0 -
