    Please.

    Stop the madness.

I agree. I can't help but to find it a little selfish of the parents. I picture a 6 year old boy at school introducing himself as Vedder or Lukin, and then having to explain that it comes from his father's liking of Pearl Jam. I dunno, just not my style.

Why not just name him Edward? Or Jeffery? Or Michael? Still gets the job done without being so in-your-face about it.

Boring......I personally think last names make great first names.

What names are mentioned in PJ songs? I was thinking about this the other day . . . . our two boys are named Jeremy & Ben (in all honesty, NOT because of PJ), I got thinking that Jeremy & Ben are both mentioned in PJ songs . . . are there any others (PJ originals?)? If we ever have a third child, it would be kind of interesting if we could find a name that is also mentioned in song lyrics.

here is what can think of off the top of my head:

    - Jeremy (from Jeremy, obviously)
    - Ben (Rats: "Ben, the two of us need look no more")
    - Frank (Dirty Frank)
    - Mike (Dirty Frank: "who's Mike McCready? My God he's been ate!")
    - Johnny (Johnny Guitar)

    Any others? Any girl's names?

Last year My wife and I had a son and named him Lukin and so far the response is amazing and everyone says that is such a cool and unique name. And surprising only one person has sad oohh that is a pearl jam song isn't it. Why go traditional and when he is in kindergarten there will be 15 Ethans.

I plan on naming my girl Everlea Carlin. And calling her EV- or Evie. carlin is combo of my mothers name Karen Lynn- and then there is the george ref. I also thought Theodore for a boy- call him teddie.

Keely could be good for a girl- and not super obvious.

and edward- way too popular- and would want your kid to be lumped in with all those twilight people?

    and then there is this...
    And by name
    The name they gave me
    The name I'm letting go

  • Our firstborn is due to arrive in a few weeks (don't worry...I still get to go to Wrigley, while my wife stays home and nurses)...Ok, that sounded like a jerk thing to say.

Anyway, I suppose subconsciously, our name choices had some Pearl Jam relevance.

If we had a girl, her name was going to be Chloe. My wife picked that. I don't know if having heard Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns so long made it sound so good to me, but it was easily my favorite of the names she had contemplated.

But we are having a boy. We went back and forth with a lot of different names, but ultimately decided on Thomas Stone. We're calling him Stone.

People who know Pearl Jam and know how I love Pearl Jam always assume it's related to that. But honestly, it's not. My actual love for the name Stone actually dates back to the sitcom "Night Court". I just always thought it sounded good for lack of better terms. Again, I still wouldn't say we're naming our son after Stone Gossard or a ficitional television judge, but again there's probably some sort of subconscious effect there.

My husband and I were talking about names the other day, and totally by coincidence, we came up with a girl's name where the initials are PJ!!!!! AWESOME!!!!! And our boy's name starts with M, so I'm now suggesting a middle name that starts with M too, so he would be M.M. Scully. Just in the hope that the kid might get a little of Mike's talent . . . :)

Oh, and I recently found out that my middle name (Margaret) means 'Pearl'. And look it's not the most glamorous name in the world, but if anyone wants to hide 'Pearl' within their daughters name, then Maggie is a goer!

Although Pearl itself is so pretty, I love that for a girl. I love EVIE too, And Lukin!!! Perfect! And Stone is AWESOME. A great name for a boy . . .

I have a fairly unique name. Not so unique that people don't know what it is, but unique enough to be the only one in my school and work. And I do think unique names are a nice gift to give to your kid, purely because it's a nice badge of individuality . . . it has been said to cause narcissism, but I don't think that true! I'm as narcissistic as the next person, but not overly so . . . ;) And look at Stone. Could anyone be less narcissistic?

So kudos to all of you who have chosen somewhat unique or different names. :) The traditional ones are lovely too (and personally I have a soft spot for Jeremy) but in my experience unique is kinda nice . . .

We named our daughter Evey (EV) and get lots of compliments until we say how we came up with it.....then we get the "oh you're crazy" fake smile...

Hahahaa. I can just see the look on their faces! GREAT NAME for a girl though. Really pretty and unique.

I used to love Eddie for a girl, for years, but given he's the third person in our marriage already, I don't know whether his name should literally become the third person in our house! ;)
  • My two beloved sons were named Cameron and Jerome Mateo.. ;)
i got memories... i got shit___..
  • I think if you come up with something that's heartfelt and has personal meaning to you, that makes it special.

Whether it's the name of a song, lyrics, a family member, or someone famous that you get your inspiration from, I say, go for the unusual or traditional, whatever speaks to you.

I personally don't know any parent who feels like they made a mistake and really wishes they had named their child something else. I also have never known anyone whose name has scarred them for life.

Even "Dewdrop" has its charm. :)
    Don't it make you smile?

I have a last name as a first name (it was my grandmother's maiden name) and though I hated it as a little kid, I've loved it since college. It's nice to have a unique name. My name is occasionally seen as a male first name but almost never as a female. People tell me they love it all the time.

Not sure I personally would feel comfortable going with a blatant PJ reference for a first name for a child (though my dog's name is Lukin!), but if I WAS going to do that, I think Vedder would be a really cool-sounding first name for either sex.

I don't have children, but i have a tendency to name the objects i am very fond of or use a lot. A little bit like when you give a boat a name. I just do it with my computer, my bicycle and my favourite bag...
When a friend of mine gave me his old surfboard, there was no doubt: it was an Edward!

I met someone at PJ20 whose son's name was Lukin.

I have a dog named Eddie.

If I ever have a son I want to name him Tommy, after the Who album, but that + my last name = virtually the same as a surgical procedure, so it's probably out. I've also joked about naming a son Elton--but, again, that + my last name = virtually the same as a famous singer.

Chloe would be a sensational girl's name...although "Chloe dances tables in the French Quarter" might be sketchy. ;)

  • I named one of my son's Vedder Eugene (Eugene after his grandfathers). Have got nothing but compliments. Everyone loves it and so does he. He is 9 and has never been made fun of at all. My name is Sunshine and I was never picked on either. Vedder's father died when he was 3 1/2 so he has no memories but is connected through his name and his dad and moms love of pearl jam. To those who think.it is selfish that we named him that you are wrong his name means something to his parents and brought them together. I was named after the nickname my mom's father called her and he passed when she was 7 so it has meaning. Name your kids what you want but it is better when their is meaning behind it.

We have an Emma Pearl. She's 4 years old now. She likes to dive off furniture and swing from the curtains... not sure if the PJ name had any influence on this behavior.

I gave my son his fathers name for his middle name because he was born 4 weeks after his dad dies in an accident with his motorbike. I think some people didn´t like it very much but no one told me and I did not care about it.
Then as my son came to school he only wanted to be called with his first name. I don´t know why but I think he hated it. Maybe it was because his middle name became a little old and a gay touch (the kids told him?).
Yes, and honestly if it wasn´t his fathers name who I loved so much I would never gave him this name (but only because of it´s bad popularity). But I thought my son would be very proud to get his fathers name. Perhaps when he gets older...! At the time he was born I couldn´t imagine that this could happen! Now only the family members call him with his both names - all his friends, teachers and others call him only with his first name.
So I think sometimes a name can have a great meaning for someone but you cannot know how it will be for someone who have to wear this name for his whole life. Like names which are sweet for liitle kids but very unsuitable for adults and their jobs.
Good luck for everyone to find a good name and I hope you have some fun with it.
Maybe searching for a name should sometimes not be so meaningful and you can take a name that just sounds good.
Best wishes and much love to all parents. Enjoy
