I think if it's an odd name like lukin I'd make it a middle name. It's not used as much but still there and has meaning. I am big pete seeger fan and I am sure Seeger will be a future name for a child and I think my wife will let it happen! None yet! good lord I can't really imagine.~JzP0

I think you don't know kids. Who has to explain where their name comes from? As long as it doesn't rhyme with a bodily function I don't think any other kids care.
Most of my friends have children older than my son. All of them want to play with Vedder. Not a single one has ever asked where that name comes from.
We have a President named Barack. Athletes named DeSean, LeBron, Carmelo, etc. The last thing this world needs is another Michael. Or Ryan (my name).0 -
One of my friends in high school was named by his mom after Elton John’s song “Daniel”. He hated that his parents named him after a song so much that he legally changed his name as soon as he could.
Of course, once my other friends found out he was named after an Elton John song, we teased the hell out of him. I would think that our upcoming generations will respect Pearl Jam but you never know.Be Excellent To Each OtherParty On, Dudes!0 -
Our daughter's middle name is Pearl...she was named after her great grandfather and her grandmother...but after reading this thread I have gained a new understanding as to why my spouse liked the name too0

My 2 year old daughter is named Jacqueline Pearl. She's been to two PJ shows already, and has already met Eddie and Matt. Maybe it's name Karma? Either way..best of luck if you decide to become parents! It's the best decision I ever made.0

When I have kids I won't be able to name them after Pearl Jam related songs & stuff. I probably wouldn't even think about it in the first place cause I know my wife would beat the hell out of me if I did. A Greek Orthodox family we name our first born son after my father's name. And if it's a girl, she will use my mother's maiden name. If though we had 2 boy's, the 2nd born son would be named after my wife's father maiden name etc ..
It's complicated but if you're Greek Orthodox, you'll understand!0 -
I've pondered this before too, but unless you actually name them after a member, I came up with nothing. Good luck, let us know what you decide on!Hearts and thoughts they fade....

A guy I used to work with named their daughters Michelle (Beatles), Jennifer (867-5309... I kid you not) and Alison (Elvis Costello).
Great songs, mind you... but, they were odd people.Allen Fieldhouse, home of the 2008 NCAA men's Basketball Champions! Go Jayhawks!

"Vedder" is becoming common. Common = Boring! Go for the obvious: Name him or her "Pearl Jam."
Pearl Jam is only two easy syllables. It works well as a first name. You can make the rest of the name as simple or complex as you like. For example, you could name your son Pearl Jam Nigel Martin. Or Pearl Jam Alexander Valentino Cooper-Martin.
You could name your daughter Pearl Jam Eleanor Martin. Or Pearl Jam Remiah Noelle Cooper-Martin.
And so on."May you live in interesting times."0 -
I don't know about for a kid (when the mistake eventually happens...)
But me and my girlfriend (living together 2 + years now) have been talking about a dog for a while.... when she was suggesting names for the dog the 2nd or 3rd one to come out of her mouth was "Corduroy"... and that was it, conversation over. The dog will be named Corduroy... I thought it was funny... she's not even a real Pearl Jam fan... knows a couple of tunes, but that's about it... and one of them is not corduroy..Houston, Texas... Believe it or not, there are 7 million people here... must be a couple of fans who'd love to see you play.0 -

It is hard to come up with names that are meaningful to you but also not too out there that the child doesn't get too picked on because of it.
My daughter is named afetr my favourite Smashing Pumpkins song - Lily
And my partner loves to believe that our son is named after the wrestler Triple H - Hunter
I love Stone for a boy and Pearl or Chloe for a girl.all you need is love, love is all you need0 -

Hopefully your kid(s) will too. I have a number of friends with 'hippie' names that have legally changed their name because, not only they had been picked on at school, but it was making it difficult for some to be taken seriously on paper - ie CV/job applications and also a barrister who'se birth name was Dewdrop (yep....). Now, if these 'different' names are part of your culture, no problem (eg native american) but a lot of these aren't and are just plain stupid. There was a thread somewhere on this forum where a teacher mentioned some of the kids' names in her class/school and it made crazy reading!
To the OP... if you are keen on a musical name, just see who inspires you. If a song name is OK for a 'human' name (ie Lily, Roxanne...) or the musician's name is cool, that's great - but putting someone else's last name (non related) as a kid's first name is just weird. I have a daughter but if it would have been a boy, amongst other names, we were considering Dylan (after Dylan Thomas). It wasn't top of the list though.0
