Who really cares what the 1992 or 2013 Eddies would think of each other?
He's doing what he wants to do now and he did what he wanted to do then.
The only person that those thoughts and feelings would be relevant and important to is ED himself.
And obviously he's cool with it.

    Carry on. :corn:

The Congo is a living nightmare, especially for women and children. I hope they raise a ton of money and do something effective with it.

I would tend to agree with this statement but for one thing: Eddie shouted his opinions at us all for a decade. Eddie built a fan base in part because of his integrity and social/political opinions.

I'm not saying this to argue but saying that Eddie wasn't just some average private citizen who talked to his buddies over dinner about politics.

Great that they can raise money for a good cause.

    agreed on both counts
    yes, he did
    yes, he does still
    and yes, we do listen

but the angry young man is now a seasoned father, husband and hopefully wiser for all his life experiences
so if he's ok with it, then who are we to say?

if this is how he feels he can do good in today's society
    so be it
    right?

    hope they make some $
    sure they will
and do whats right with it
    peace,

I agree. We certainly are independent thinkers and should form our own conclusions. Hell, I disagree with Ed on probably 80% of his politics but respect him because I believe he geniunely cares for the common good. But because he is a public figure and certainly made politics/social issues a big part of his public persona I think we can enjoy a good debate on whether we agree or disagree (and potential vent some dissapointment). For example, the private shows for corporations. If you want to raise money for charity why not play a couple shows for your fans and donate the proceeds? Who knows, maybe there was more to those private gigs.

As I type this I understand how pathetic it sounds. Need a better hobby than that :).

Most people attending this event are probably doing so based on the cause, and not to see Eddie perform.

Reading through this it jumps out at me that some suggest Eddie got a fanbase based on his politics and activism

Id think I'm speaking for the masses that I got into pj for the music - and the music only. It got me by the balls and still does. Sure it was angry at times but at times not.

But did I start to like the band more because they fought ticketmaster? Well that's a resounding no.

And I think someone said somewhere - you have to pay 35k to see Eddie play... Well actually that ROTFLMAO....the auction is to have dinner with a very successful ex president of the USA. One admired round the world. Eddie is just a bonus to the evening - and why not? It sounds perfect when you think about it?

I'd love to know why the conversation would be awkward too... These all seen very down to earth approachable people who have interesting thoughts. I'd love to hear the banter at that table.

When it's all said and done how dare Ed use his well earned profile to raise money for a cause he obviously cares about and in doing so exclude his average fan... I mean how dare he ?

It seems some people don't like Ed doing this kind of thing, it's too 'Hollywood Ed'. Whatever that means. Personally I don't care what he does as long as he is still making good records

Certainly the masses are in it for the music.

But Ed was labeled the voice of the generation early on. The lyrics were very politically and socially charged. The concerts were filled with political and social rhetoric and speeches. Ripping on advertisements in venues and bands that "wanted to be famous". I don't think there is any doubt that part of PJ's rise to fame was due to their anti-establishment voice. It is clear in the Moving Train forum that if Pearl Jam were a Republican band that a lot of people would have left this band a long time ago, or not been as die hard of fans.

Rarely does an article about Pearl Jam not mention their politics. It was an important part of their image. I don't think you can deny that. The fan base would be completely different if this was a Republican band or a band that took no political or social stance. I can't say what it would look like but it would be different.

I don't think if I discovered the band now that I would be a die hard fan. They are just like any band now: play a few shows for cash, sell some shirts, etc... I don't sense what I sensed in 1998 when I thought they were all about the music and art and playing live shows. Maybe it is too difficult for them to put shows on, but if you were a singer I can't figure out why you wouldn't play a concert in your hometown every once in a while.
