Have the band announce tour dates 5 months on advance and painfully wait with your tickets in hand

Or

Have the band announce a tour 2 and a half months in advance and have the show come much quicker.

5 months in advance is better for me. My wife and I need time to make arrangements with our work. Since PJ has never played closer than three hours away, we usually plan a vacation around the tour.
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of
arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to
slide in sideways, BBQ sandwich in one hand, cold beer in the other,
body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming "Woo Hoo what a
    ride"!

Happy with whatever they do that results in a show in addition to Wrigley for me this year but if I had a choice:

Advance - I love planning shit out and there aren't a ton of things that would make me really look forward to a specific date like seeing a kick ass concert.

This would never happen, but I'd love them to announce shows the day of in smaller venues or a week in advance since I don't plan on traveling much this time around.

ex: Recently in LA, The Rolling Stones did a warm-up gig for their tour at the Echoplex, which is a small 700 capacity club. People were tipped off but the ticket sales lottery and show were all in the same day. Similarly, when Foo Fighters were debuting Wasting Light by playing small clubs in LA, they'd drop hints on twitter before a final reveal of the venue details in the late afternoon, then it was a mad dash to the venue. Both the Stones and Foos shows were only $20. Also, QOTSA is playing a show at the Wiltern this week (~2200 capacity) after just announcing it last week.

I know that this is harder for people in smaller markets, but I really liked the thrill of the chase with some of those shows.

Quick follow up: would you rather sleep with Howard Stern or the Boston bomber?

I'd say 5 months in advance, for logistical and planning purposes. Plus I enjoy being excited for a long time for these kind of events, especially if it's PJ 8-)

5 months...planning things like a 'Packing List' for PJ20 was so awesome, planning an awesome Steak Night dinner with 30+ other awesome PJ friends was really fun.
Hilarity ensued when a certain notice was posted at the KOA in Missoula... ;)

Some magical things happen when we get a chance to plan other activities around a PJ show.

Advance. It is just easier than scrambling I feel to put something together. It can be a lot to juggle in a short amount of time. Plus all our employers can't really say no to us if we put in for these dates 5 months in advance right? Haha

Advance. I have to plan out Vacation days in advance. The longer I have to wait, the higher the odds someone else books those days off in the calendar.

I generally go to Vancouver and Seattle shows (I live in Victoria). It takes about 4 hours to get to Vancouver when you add up the driving, waiting, ferry, and more driving, and 5-6 to seattle. I'd need to book at least one day off if it were a weekend. Sat/Sun would require me to take monday off to get home. Fri/Sat, I'd need the Friday off to get there. If its mid week I'd need more days. Especially if Vancouver got a date as well.

The sooner, the better. I'd like to have a little vacation left. But, I can't change when they announce it, so I'll be patient.

The sooner the better here too. Flights, hotels, vacation time...all these things are easier to set up when you have plenty of notice.

I would definitely prefer the earlier notice, be able to make my plans for the event & then count down to the event itself.

However, I really liked what Foo Fighters did to start their Wasting Light tour and the same ideas that some other bands are doing that were mentioned in the above post. I think it would be completely incredible to have a few of these small, last minute shows sprinkled throughout a tour. Maybe announce a full tour (ya, I know) several months out with some open days strung between some of the announced shows. Then, as the tour kicks off, about 1 week out from some of the various open dates, announce a show at small intimate venue. It could be in the city they just played or are about to play or it could be in a nearby city 70-100 miles away in between 2 announced cities. I, personally think that would be really cool to see and to follow. It would be a planned tour with a bunch of unknown surprises along the way.

I like this idea. I don't like this whole having to be connected to some form of social media/twitter/facebook 24 hours a day, just to have a snowball's chance in hell at seeing a frickin' rock show. Everything is becoming too damn fast paced for me, it seems. I know - I sound like an old fart, but I'm only 39!!!

Definitely as much advance notice as possible required from here. Some hell long flights required for me generally that are always going to be cheaper the further in advance you can book them.

Amen!! I generally live good driven road trips, which in themselves take hella planning and saving, but when I finally do my Euro- Aussie tour..., gonna need time for planning and booking cheap flights and stays!!!!
