Saw recent thread complaining about lyrics..
Think that is kind of crazy..Not sure about all those complaining about the lyrics being weak but I can tell you my best lyrics wouldnt be able to touch Ed's worst. Plus, the guy has written lyrics for hundreds of songs..there is only so much shit in your head you can put on paper and come out with "black"... Just saying, for those criticizing, write some lyrics and see how good it is.. never mind putting it to music

Sounds like you're trolling for an argument....This could be the day0 -
I think everyone is aware that Ed is an outstanding songwriter, probably most people's favorite around here, and none of us could do what he does. I also think that a little light hearted, innocuous jesting about an isolated line or two in a huge catalogue of songs is pretty harmless.
By the way, I'm just assuming you're referring to the thread about "that's the moss in the aforementioned verse." If not, I must have missed other bashing threads."Most men lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them." - Thoreau

If it is about that lyric - foolish - the simplicity and humour of it - and how it doesn't fit - is what actually makes it brilliant. Just sayin'.....Your Disciples Are Riddled With Metaphors.

I agree. He's one of my favorite songwriters/lyricists of all time, but every now and then he throws out a dud. It's ok to discuss this. Think about writers too - -Im a big fan of Anne Rice. I've read nearly all of her books. The last one wasnt too good though.. snoozefest in fact. Some criticism is ok now and then. I'd want to know if I was in their shoes. I might not care to change, but I'd want to know.
Personally, the lyrics to Force of Nature make me cringe. But 97% of all the other tunes I love. Its just a topic of conversation among fans..
We also have to take into account what the OP said -- "I totally agree "there is only so much shit in your head you can put on paper and come out with "black"... Just saying" (makes sense)Pick up my debut novel here on amazon: Jonny Bails Floatin (in paperback) (also available on Kindle for $2.99)0 -

I don't have a problem with that lyric and didn't even post in the thread where it was discussed, just read through it. It was pretty light hearted and I wouldn't call it bashing. And that's the only thread I read the last day or two that criticized lyrics, so that's why I'm just assuming what the OP is referencing. But I could be totally wrong."Most men lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them." - Thoreau

Gotcha, I must have missed that. But I know some people think that song is cheesy. Like you, I love that song - best one on Backspacer by far for me. But even if people are criticizing it, they probably still think Ed is a top notch song writer. As someone just said above me, respectfully (and that's the key - are at least in a really light hearted way) pointing out a dud lyric here and there is pretty harmless and can make for interesting discussion, so long as it stays respectful (which, I agree, rarely happens)."Most men lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them." - Thoreau

yeah.. I guess you are right. To be honest, I didn't really read too much into the thread. Just saw some people saying lyrics sucked.. No problem with that. Everybody has an opinion on songs/lyrics..I think we can all agree that Ed won't have any lyrics like this
She's my cherry pie
Cool drink of water
Such a sweet surprise
Tastes so good
Make a grown man cry0 -
Who are these people bashing No Code lyrics???And so you see, I have come to doubt
All that I once held as true
I stand alone without beliefs

When you have a pretty large library of emotional, thought provoking and intelligent lyrics, then churn out an Incubus-esque line like "gems and rhinestones" you're gonna get called on it.0

Indeed.
And I think that's exactly why it's fair to lightly jest at a couple of Ed lines. The vast majority of his lyrics are brilliant, and the vast majority of mainstream music is loaded with cringe-worthy lines that are eaten up by the masses. So if a brilliant writer fires a dud on a rare occasion, it can be fun to poke at it, knowing good and well he's on another level compared to others.
By the way, Warrant is laughable for sure, but some of that cheesy 80s rock is fun. I'll put it out there - I love Def Leppard and Poison, and some of their lyrics are pretty bad."Most men lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them." - Thoreau

Yeah... 80s stuff is so bad it is great! I grew up to that in HS so all that cheese will always hold a special place in my heart!! I actually listened to some Tesla songs a few weeks back. Pretty solid songs they had0 -

brandon boyd has become the cheeseball of cheeseballs. shame too, because incubus is better musically now then they have ever been.0 -
recently someone pointed out how take the reins in loveboat captain was grammatically incorrect
kind of pettyfuck 'em if they can't take a joke
"what a long, strange trip it's been"0 -
As English is not my mother tongue, I confess, I have some problems sometimes in understanding and fully appreciating Eddie's deep, multi-layered lyrics. So I guess 80's cheesy ones are good for me.:)
Having said that, my appreciation for some PJ songs has fully changed with paying attention to lyrics. Was not a fan of Corduroy, until... How can you not love a song that starts with,"the waiting drove me mad".What's your part, who you are?

yes, it was.
but I also learned something about the meaning of "aforementioned" that day, so I'm satisfied.0
