Big Bank Hank's ranking of songs off album are way off, except for JG. 7s and 7.5s for the best songs on album? You are way off sir.
why don't you try ranking them I mean except for JG I really could listen non-stop to the whole album repeatedly, I mean a 7.5 for a Pearl Jam song is like a 9 for another band, they just have set the ratings bar so high but there mass inventory of awesome songs, so other songs of their's get judged more harshly I really do dig 9 of the 11 tracks a lot on Backspacer

I don't know if there is much correlation. I'm a guitar player and I'm in between you guys. Love Johnny Guitar. Gods' Dice is my least favorite on Binaural. Not really into Big Wave...think it's all just personal preference as always

Gonna See My Friend - 8 (love this song, i think it's very underrated)
Got Some - 8.5 (the "Hail Hail" or "Save You" of this record - solid rocker/concert staple)
The Fixer - 4 (fun enough song, but the lyrics are super cheesy)
Johnny Guitar - 3 (just can't get into it at all)
Just Breathe - 7 (still a beautiful song - overplayed doesn't make a song bad)
Amongst The Waves - 4 (another one with a super cheesy feel to me, and it sounds like contemporary adult rock)
    Unthought Known - 10 (brilliant)
Supersonic - 3 (meh, it's okay but i would never miss NOT hearing it)
Speed of Sound - 5 (i actually really enjoyed this live)
Force of Nature - 7 (great song, have loved it since i first got Backspacer)
The End - 6 (good song, seems like just an Ed solo song though)

I know the rankings may seem harsh, but I was just underwhelmed by Backspacer. There are a few really strong songs on this album that I adore, but no middle ground for me. The ones I don't love, I strongly dislike. This was the first PJ album with more than 1-2 songs I didn't care for on it.

sure Amongst The Waves is cheesy but when everyone sings "I can feel like I have a soul that has been saved, it is pretty damn cool, it's a fun party song live to me, I dig it

JG is my favourite song off backspacer. I'm a musician and it was the first and only song I learnt off that album. Have to say it's my least fave album to date, never really grew on me like the previous 2 did after my initial indifference to them.

It's all subjective people, what I love you might hate (Hello, Sandy Allen) and vice versa. My favourite PJ song today is Who You Are. go figure.

ps pearl jam, nz needs you man. all we have had this year is lady gaga and one direction. hear our prayers I beg you.

I think Force of Nature is the best song on the album, and the best song they have released since Do the Evolution.

I think were starting to see a correlation here. Topaz only learned JG off of Backspacer. Mr. PJstatTracker who also plays guitar with one hand while developing apps with the other hand also loves JG. So Drummerboy, I think we have something here.
  • I think it's really neat actually. I really like the falsetto part where he sings "in case sheeeee!"

I play drums and guitar too and I really dig Johnny Guitar. But I've never even attempted to play it on either.

I like it. Listening right now. I can't actually quite explain why I like it. It just feels kind of good. Sort of makes me smile. It's not my fave or anything, but I enjoy it.

johnny guitar is my favourite backspacer song (besides the fixer, got some and gonna see my friend).
it's rock, it's catchy, it's sexy and a little weird. i love it. unskippable!

and for the statistics: i'm not a musician. but usually prefer the more punk or obscure tunes and i'm always glad they don't forget about fans like me : )

So funny that I signed on and this thread was up because I was thinking about starting one saying how I think it is one of the better songs on Backspacer... honestly! I like it much better than the fixer, got some, the end, just brteahe, and supersonic. gonna see my friend, amongst the waves, unthought known, and force of nature are better, so i guess this song makes middle of the pack for me. cool guitar and vocal styles.

to me this song is a total joke, a made up story by Eddie, pure Science Fiction, has he even met Johnny Guitar Watson? and certainly not in the way it relates to the song, his heart isn't in the vocals, you can tell he is faking the song, the worst Pearl Jam song to make it to record, that is a full length song, brutal

seriously if Pearl Jam had ditched Johnny Guitar and replaced it with Of The Earth it would of raised the cache on that album considerably, and that is what I did, and that is the way I listen to Backspacer, the much improved Backspacer :D
