Yeah sorry fellow PJ fans...just a throw away question here, not looking for an in depth discussion here, but I came across Tool about 2 years ago and find the band to be, to use a most over used phrase, fkn awesome.
Any fellow PJ fans out there who would like to air their views and suggest what to listen to or what to buy in order of preference, or even just general views on tracks or albums.

    They only have 5 albums so there isn't much to choose from. If you like to listen to an album straight through, then get one of the last two. If you like to jump around from song to song get the first three.

    Aenima is a good place to start.

    You can't go wrong with ANY Tool album. A Perfect Circle is pretty amazing as well.

    I started listening to Tool in middle school when Opiate came out. The journey they took from that record to 10,000 days is something you should take with them. I really think it's best to listen to the records in order so you can fully appreciate how they developed their sound.

    You should also check out all the videos. Especially the early ones. Adam Jones, their guitarist, directs and handles art direction and his stop motion stuff is out of this world. He used to work at an effects house in Hollywood. Unlike Pearl Jam, who seems to be all over the place when it comes to art direction, Tool is a band with a very clear vision in that regard. In fact they're rereleasing Opiate for the 21 year anniversary with a bunch of new artwork.

    Anyway, Tool is fucking awesome. Puscifer blows and APC is great.

    I agree with October22, you should listen to the albums in order.

    Take your time with each one, as songs don't always click on the first listen.

    Still find myself discovering new things about their music when listening.

    Tool is amazing. I believe sober could be the best song that came out of the 90's. Disgustipated is trippy song. Can't go wrong with any tool cd.

    AEnima was a high water mark for me.. They were just the right amount of hungry and successful and put on a musical pedestal at that moment.. High water doesn't mean everything after that is bad in any way! it is actually fucking awesome.. but that album, those songs are just fucking incredible!! and that is the album I suggest to people that are curious about them and have never given them a proper spin..

    I can't add anything to what the others have said, they're all right. In respect to A Perfect Circle, I'd give them a listen as well. I find their music even darker than Tool, but more ambient musically. Both brilliant bands with enormous talent and technical skill. Welcome to the Tool Army.

    I love Tool BUT 10,000 Days blows. 3 AMAZING songs (Vicarious, The Pot, and Jambi), the rest is boring or filler.

    Rosetta Stoned has one of the best drum parts I have ever heard. Changing from 4/4 to 5/4 and back. The guitar riffs are amazing as well.
    Right in two has an amazing crescendo. All parts voice, bass, drums and guitar feed off each other.
    10,000 days is about Maynard's momma and rolls hard.
    BUT, to each his own. These songs to me are amazing and as someone said before , listen to the albums in order. The band really has gotten better with each album.

    Cheers guys...all aboard for the 1-5 album journey methinx, it usually is worth following a band in order. Just like authors, all the pent up anger, angst and creativity burst out in their 1st published works then they kindly take us with them on their own journey, Pearl Jam and Led Zeppelin being prime examples of this.

    Yeah, the videos are amazin'...it was the videos on Youtube that turned me on to them one night by accident.

    I'll give A Perfect Circle a blast as well, and even check out Puscifer.

    Every album has it's own recipe, start from the beginning to acquire a taste.... Time to crank up "Undertow" from the "Undertow" album... Great song... (be sure to find the hidden 69)

    And to get a full appreciation for the band's music, they are a MUST to see live....chances to do so are dwindling, so you may have to check out old vidoes on youtube....Maynard on stage in the 90's didn't get any better :D

    Anyways, like everybody else is saying, they only have 5 albums so listen from album 1-5. Only shitty part for you is that this next album and tour can possibly be there last. And if you haven't seen them yet, you better grab a tix next time they're around your parts.

    Any band that can move you to tears must be something special...2 albums by Elbow (The seldom seen kid & Build a rocket boys) with their award winning lyrics tip me over the edge on a far too regular basis... :roll:

    Also, yes Tool live is amazing and I've been lucky to see them several times and a few were at small GA spots and it was always awesome. However, like someone alluded to earlier, they aren't the most engaged live band. Especially Maynard. Coming from a PJ experience, they are very cold live performers. However, Maynard is a lot more fun at APC shows which I've also been lucky enough to catch. Bottom line though is that if you can see them, do so.
