I took a leak at a Tool concert once, if that counts for anything...
the second show I went to , Maynard asked everyone to have ...x
The people next to me actually did. You should have been there to leak on them. I asked them politely to stop, and the guy said mind your own business, the girl kept moaning. Gross.
That's nasty.
The last time I saw Tool Maynard had everyone repeating after him when he started to say, "Think for yourself. Question Authority." Then the crowd would yell it. This went on for a few minutes.
I turned to my friend and asked if I was the only one that saw the irony in this whole thing. Finally Maynard filled everyone on how much of a moron they were for following someone in a chant that is saying, "Think for yourself."
One of the funniest things I've ever seen at a show. They have a great sense of humor that is lost on a lot of people.

Awesome!
The Band is named TOOL. A tool is something you use. Maynard doesn't even like tool fans, because most don't even get that reference. I'm typing this while looking at a phallic shaped tool sticker taped to my computer tower. Boys and tools.
I remember seeing them on their first big tour with Lollapalooza 93. He came out in drag.
Now he just hangs out in the back in the dark. People thinks they are being cold. I think it's pretty funny.
Tool is the one group that I don't mind being up in the balcony. The last time I saw them, everything was white. For certain songs, they had a movie type thing going on the entire stage and backdrop. So the people in the balcony got a totally different show than the people on the floor.
They should really stop putting out CD's and start putting out dvd's since their music is so visual.

Tool was my first concert when i was 13. I wasn't that into Rosetta Stoned before it, but when they played it live i was sooooo blown away and I love it now. I've seen them two more times since then. I was so excited at the last show because they opened with "Hooker With A Penis" and that's one of my faves.

Tool has no bad songs and a ton of wicked songs that are awesome. A 'casual' listener at first... about 5 years ago I went 'all in'. They are the best band out there in my opinion. Have only seen them once and had to travel to St. Paul to do it. Will travel again- except not to Australia.

My buddy and I made the venture from BC thinking it might be one of the last opportunities to see this band- we both love them. It was money well spent- they did not disappoint.
I have to tell you... that was the best time I have had at a concert in a long time! If we are ever sitting across from each other having beers... let's exchange war stories- I've got a few doozies from this show.
I've seen Tool four times now. The first was at Lolla '97 at the Gorge. It's still by far my favorite. I think that was the Lollapalooza that was supposed to have Korn on it, but they dropped off, so the only bands of note left on the bill were Snoop Dog & Tool.
I'm not into Hip Hop, but Snoop's set was actually pretty good. Someone threw a J on the stage and he proceeded to pick it up, and it looked like the police weren't too happy, and a F the police chant breaks out with this really rowdy crowd.. the police took a step back
Anyways the Tool set was insane. Maynard was painted blue and it was one of (if not the most) intense pits I've ever seen. The crowd was very energized and the band fed off it. I suppose its on the time I've ever seen Tool in a GA environment.
Saw them again Vancouver for Lateralus. It was by the worse show I've ever seen them do. 9 songs over 2.5 hours. Maynard hid at the back of the stage. The problem with that is we had tickets in the wings. Because of the supersized speaker stacks you couldn't see the back of stage. Apparently its really hard to enjoy a show where you can can't see the singer sing. This put me off Tool for a while.
Then in 06 I moved to Edmonton and we got some last minute tix row 7 on the floor. It was a very stripped down stage show compared to Lateralus and the band rocked it the whole time through. It restored my faith in Tool.
Saw them a 4th time in Edmonton in 2010. It was pretty good too (except the seats were crappier ). I wasn't ready for it to end.
So 3/4 isn't too bad. Nothing top's 97 though. Its one of my most insane concert memories, the intensity of the pit that day was crazy.

For sure. I was more towards the back left... close to the portable toilets, smoking joints throughout.
Lateralus is my favorite Tool album and, rightly so, one of my favorite albums of all time.
I've gone back and forth on favorite songs
Right now I'm really digging "The Patient" and "Reflection" has always been one of my favorites
9-8-7 live is fucken insane! My fav part of the shows are Danny's solo!!! Lateralus is so fucken amazing, this band is a complete mind fuck live.
For sure. I was more towards the back left... close to the portable toilets, smoking joints throughout.
I actually got hit in the face at that show
My buddy and I were very near the front- left side.
Took a shot, eh? Those happen.
Not gonna lie... my buddy and I and this other dude to my right kinda got tired of all the rodents shoving their way past us into what was already a tight squeeze (basically saying 'Fuk You' to us). I'm not proud to say it... but when push came to shove... we got a little violent on a few occasions. There seemed to be quite a few people with the same disposition as us- there were shots flying everywhere!
I really don't act that way normally... but for whatever reason... the crowd seemed to get riled up and I fell right into line. Came out relatively unscathed... but over a beer... I'll share a hilarious story with you: I'll let you know that it did involve me getting shoved, jostled, punched, and- believe it or not- bit.
From the descript... one might be inclined to think it was a terrible show. It was awesome! The 'festivities' just added to the entire spectacle.

But next time... I'll hang outside the violence.
It wasn't a punch, though. Was a kid about to throw up! He ran right into me and I took a shoulder to the face!
The back was pretty sweet.... just people dancing, smoking joints... bowls were being passed around...
TOOL and Pearl Jam are my two favorite bands hands down, far and away from any other music on this planet.
I was introduced to tool from a kid in my high school in 9th grade, his name was Dan Barnaby. Getting to listen to their music over the past 20 years and listening to them evolve is an experience I will never get with any other band. Someone nailed it by saying they do not have any bad songs. You listen to TOOL one album at a time. Listening to TOOL and how their musical arrangements expanded to the point that I believe they were creating masterpieces song by song. You really have to be a patient person to appreciate TOOL, as some songs routinely hit 7+ minutes and is just a roller coaster of highs and lows. When Lateralus was released, I listened to that album every single day from beginning to end for 18 straight months. I could not imagine how this band could evolve again but sure enough, with their last album 10,000 this is by far their most lyrically enriched album and they continued creating what I feel are orchestrated masterpieces from Vicarious to 10,000 Days (about his mother who was wheelchair bound from multiple sclerosis her last 10,000 days on Earth (I am getting goose bumps just thinking of that song)) to Right in Two. I really thought TOOL was going to continue with their 5 year trend of releasing album, but with 2011 passing without a peep, I am wondering if we will ever be lucky enough to hear new music. But if not, their albums are timeless enough to keep me engaged for a very very long time.

they are so unique and one of a kind. Possibly the most bizarre band ever, and certainly most bizarre band to become a major mainstream success. Thats one of the more puzzling things about them. They are so not of the pop music world, and their music is about such deep subject matter, yet they are easily one of the most popular bands of the last 20 years, everyone knows who they are.
I like how they use their music essentially to try and wake up the subconscious of the audience. Again, no other band does this.
Plus they operate so far outside what most bands deem okay. A 13 minute song about Jungian concepts and a 10 minute song about Buddhist concepts of letting go...well...sure...why not!
