+10000000. Self-titled was unlistenable for me other than Inside Job. It's Pearl Jam's Rocky 5. I just pretend it doesn't exist. Backspacer is enjoyable because it's so friendly (Just Breathe, The Fixer, Amongst the Waves, Unthought Known). It's not a must have album at all but it's definitely enjoyable.

Yeah I still dislike Backspacer. I don't want Black II or RVM II but there is nothing on Backspacer that I feel compares or is as strong as anything in their back catalogue. I cringe at most of the songs and lyrics on the album. I always feel the Backspacer songs lose the momentum in a gig.

I do feel though that it was an album the guys in the band needed to make. Hopefully that's out of their system now and they can get back to writing good rock and roll songs.

The only thing I will admit is that Pearl Jam is my favorite band and always will be.

I like Backspacer and Avocado. I will admit that "Johnny Guitar" isn't their best track, though. Backspacer is nowhere near as deep as PJ's earlier works, but I still enjoy it. It's not at #1 (Ten is), but maybe #3 or #4 in my ranking.

Favorite song from Backspacer: "Just Breathe"
Favorite song from Avocado: "Wasted Reprise"

I think "Of the Earth" could have lifted "Backspacer" up, though I guess it didn't fit its "mood." Still, "Backspacer" was probably better than most if not all of the albums that came out in 2009 (was "Black Gives Way to Blue" that year?).

BS: tracks 1,2,3,5, and 11 are really great songs. most of the remaining songs are medium to moderately good. one or two stinkers. the fixer is what this album is based around....as it should be.

It appears to me from reading posts that longtime fans who have been with the band since the beginning or very early on dont care for the last two albums as much. People that are newer to the PJ seem to love those albums.

If you're right, and I suspect you are, than I think THAT is the mark of a great band. They sound fresh to younger generations. Though I fell in love with bands like the Rolling Stones in the early nineties.. it was definitely NOT their nineties work that I gravitated to! I think it's cool that younger PJ fans are into the more recent stuff. As for me, I think Avocado was a very focused album, and Backspacer felt sort of tossed off like a bunch of B sides. I like PJ both when they are tossing off Bsides, and when they are focused.

Backspacer is pretty bad in relation to their other albums. To say its better than avocado is crazy. Severed hand? Come back? Inside job? Life wasted? Mike is let loose! Not so much on backspacer. Avocado is a much better album.

I still really like Backspacer and I listen to it pretty regularly. The fact that it's in last place when I rank their records doesn't make it a bad album, it's just that they set a pretty high standard with the other 8! :)

I was never too fond of it, but objectively speaking, it's not a bad record. My subjective impressions say otherwise. Some of Ed's lyrics got a bit too "hokey" for me, but I can understand why he's writing like that now, and will likely continue to do so. I'm so removed from this record lyrically that listening to it is actually a bit uncomfortable. Apparently Ed didn't spend more than a half-hour on each song's lyrics, and I think it shows. No big issues with the music, really, though Unthought Known's intro-build up is a tad too long for my liking (but great tune, once it takes off.) Some great riffs to be found, and Ed's vocal melodies/hooks are nice on the ears. My personal favourite songs are Got Some & The Fixer; more objectively, I consider Just Breathe to be a fantastic composition, an instant classic.
