I actually really like S/T. Not a fan of Backspacer at all apart for a song or two but I'm still holding out for a return to form in the next one. I know a lot of people see Backspacer as some sort of progression but I think it was a step back in some ways. As the band (and myself) is getting older, I would love more depth, not less. That's what made me fall in love with this band in the first place. Backspacer just has no emotional resonance for me. I wonder how many people would "love" it if another band's name was on it?

that's just it, no other band could put out Backspacer. it's one of a kind, and unique to Pearl Jam's amazing catalog. 8-)

Can't we all just admit that we love every fucking record PJ has put out? See, I can do it too! 8-)

The problem I had with Backspacer was continuity. Everyone in the band writes songs and it felt like it. An Ed song, then a Stone song, then a Mike song, now a Matt song, lets get Jeff in there. There are some really good songs but the album as a whole had a weird feel to it.

I enjoy backspacer for what it is. However, it is my least favorite of all the PJ records.
But (I could be wrong).., they hardly play these songs live? I think even PJ know these tunes are not up to par with the rest of the catalog. And I predict we will see a lot less of backspacer over the years.

I like Backspacer. Love "Got Some" "Unthought Known" "Amongst the Waves". "Of the Earth" is one of my favorite pieces theyve ever done. Oh and I like "Ole" There has been plenty of stuff over 22 years of PJ I don't love and some that I don't care for at all, but to say that it is "just awful" is a little ridiculous.

I like Backspacer and actually prefer it to a few of the other albums. We have to rank them all somehow so everyone has most and least favorites.

    I quite liked backspacer.

It had some good rockers. I had some really nice ballad type songs. I really like unthought known, johnny guitar, the end, just breathe, ..

I find myself listening to Avacodo/Backspacer more often than the binaural/riot act era stuff.

I know you're joking, but at the risk of being labeled, I do love every fucking record they have put out! In terms of rankings, sure, they may land in different spots at different times but I still like them all better than anything from my next band (whoever the hell that may be!).

It's really weird. You see lots of rude responses when a poster comments things like "wish they would hurry up with the next album" or "wish they would tour more", almost like some feel the need to defend the band with regard to those things (um they don't need defending btw), but LITERALLY the same people in some instances will then proceed to bash an actual work from the band. Bizarre.

On the other hand, the first six records are masterpieces in my eyes.

I really like BS... it has a No Code feel (i.e. the songs/order seem disjointed, but somehow the collection of them feels like a whole thought).

Like every record there are some highlights and some lowlights, and songs that strike a cord with some and not others... but anyway...

    to each their own.

I will happily listen to Unthought Known, Gonna See My Friends, Got Some, Speed of Sound, Supersonic, The End at any shows the boys want to play them, and I will continue to take a pee break during Just Breathe, Johnny Guitar, and The Fixer (just because I've seen that one at every show they've played since 09)... and that's the way it is.

Like someone else said, I think I'll give this record a spin today, just in spite of the OP's position .
Houston, Texas... Believe it or not, there are 7 million people here... must be a couple of fans who'd love to see you play.
