SAN ANTONIO - The sequester spending cuts are taking their toll and no one is feeling them more than the military.
Active service military members in the Army, Navy and Marines will no longer get assistance to further their educations.
All three have suspended their programs until the nation's fiscal situation clears up.
At Fort Sam Houston, soldiers had until March 8 to apply for tuition assistance. Those who missed the deadline can no longer qualify.
Those currently receiving assistance will not have it renewed at the end of the semester.
Currently, 20 percent of the Army population at Fort Sam Houston receive tuition assistance.
A spokesman for Joint Base San Antonio said more than 24,000 members of the military based at Lackland Air Force Base, Randolph Air Force Base and Fort Sam Houston had been eligible for the program.
The Air Force has not made any announcement about its tuition assistance.

I'd think you'd be happy... Congress has CUT SPENDING. Isn't that what you have been championing... Spending Cuts?Allen Fieldhouse, home of the 2008 NCAA men's Basketball Champions! Go Jayhawks!

I also heard from a returning vet that they revoked his conceal and carry and do not allow any purchase of guns. Every returning soldier considered a domestic terrorist.

I work with active service as well as veterans... this is a new one on me.
I'll check around.

Also... To address the original poster... This is part of the thing that Conservative Republicans argue against.
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Agency: Veterans Affairs
Spending: $137.4 billion
Percentage Change from 2012: 10.6 percent increase
Discretionary Spending: $61 billion
Highlights: Obama’s budget reflects the growing number of veterans who will need health care through the VA. The budget projects that about 610,000 veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars will get health care through VA’s hospitals and clinics this fiscal year. The budget seeks spending increases for virtually all health services provided, including a 5 percent increase for mental health services, which has become a top priority among congressional oversight committees, and a double-digit increase for health programs designed to assist female veterans.
The budget also proposes $1 billion over five years for a Veterans Jobs Corps, a new initiative that would put veterans to work rebuilding roads, trails and other infrastructure on public lands.
The budget seeks a 33 percent increase in spending to combat homelessness among veterans. The administration has set a goal of eliminating homelessness among veterans by 2015. The money would be used to hire coordinators who will help veterans with disability claims, housing problems and other needs. Additional money would be provided to non-profits that help house veterans and their families.
Obama also is seeking more money to deal with the growing number of disability claims that the department is getting from veterans. Veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan are filing claims that include about 8.5 disabilities per veteran, a rate nearly double that for claims from veterans of previous wars."
If you want to complain to someone, start with Rep. Bohner. He's the one that did not want to discuss anything on the cutting board.Allen Fieldhouse, home of the 2008 NCAA men's Basketball Champions! Go Jayhawks!

Maybe this will keep some percentage of people from joining the military. Less soldiers equals less ability to make war.The only people we should try to get even with...
...are those who've helped us.

didn't the republicans offer Obama the ability to make all the decisions on the cuts?
wouldn't have been any discussions then, President Obama could have made the cuts where he saw fit.that’s right! Can’t we all just get together and focus on our real enemies: monogamous gays and stem cells… - Ned Flanders

do you really think the republicans would offer that power to obama unconditionally?
they have fought him tooth and nail on everything, even the things that they themselves originally came up with, voted on, and passed, only to withdraw support when obama agreed with them that it was a good idea or good for the country."You can tell the greatness of a man by what makes him angry." - Lincoln

And that is the root of the problem. Both sides worried more about "political pitfall" then the country they have been elected and PAID to serve.hippiemom = goodness0 -

I'm fine with budget cuts. I'm not fine with the people in charge of making those cuts basically not making a decision on what gets cut and what doesn't.hippiemom = goodness0 -

Maybe they're responding to constituents who don't want to be effected by the cuts? They're aren't many fields where if a person does their job, there's a big risk of losing that job.0 -

The only catch is that he would be the one making the choice on where to cut as far as I know. Which is a political pitfall all its own. But there both sides are again, playing political games while Rome is burning. He should have taken it and cut spending where he wanted it cut. Pitfalls or not, the president doesn't get that power ever and he could have made some solid tough choices to cut 85 billion out of 3.7 trillion.Go Beavers wrote:People want the budget cut, so what are they expecting? exactly. This shit has to happen, tuition assistance is great WHEN WE CAN AFFORD IT. Things have to go...non-essential programs have to be cut down while we get our budget in order.that’s right! refer to the gop wanting to repeal obamacare and cut medicare and medicaid. they or their family members will never need those programs directly, so gut em, right?
you can't call for across the board spending cuts and then bitch when cuts are made.
i agree with what someone said above about this maybe keeping people from enlisting. smaller military makes it more difficult to wage war. if you cut education funding you disincentivize people from joining."You can tell the greatness of a man by what makes him angry." - Lincoln

Something lost here is that service members who wish to take advantage of this program pay some into it as well , with (exceding) matching funds from their respective branch. This amount was also increased after 9/11 due to the extended deployments.
When I was in, 25 years ago this october , we were given to one chance option during bootcamp.
I have yet to hear from my company about this, as we have a vets program that vets can take advantage of._____________________________________SIGNATURE________________________________________________

I'm going to have to look that one up.
But, the political climate, as it exists today... does anyone see the John Bohner lead House giving any omnipotent powers over budget spending cuts to the President? I heard Bohner doesn't care much for the President.

Yes... poor little Mom and Pop Aerospace Giant Lockheed/Martin. What ever are they going to do without taxpayer contracts to make military hardware to fight a conventional war in Europe with the non-existant Soviet Union?
