Both are the main creative force behind a legendary rock band. Both are amazing musicians and both can sing. Which one and why?
Forced to endure, what I cannot forgive.

Shocking, coming from you.
They were also both known for being an asshole at times, or often.
I have to go with Pete as well. I think Waters was brilliant though. Pete and David Gilmore are two of my fav guitarists of all time. So makes it hard for me to pick Roger.Forced to endure, what I cannot forgive.0 -

Lol, that would have been a good fight back in the day. Two guys with bad tempers. Though Pete was knocked out by Roger Daltrey with one punch.Forced to endure, what I cannot forgive.0 -
Do you really need to guess who I'd say?

But having read Pete's autobiography, I'll add that he very much admires Waters and has since the early days of Pink Floyd."The stars are all connected to the brain."0 -

I did not know that but it makes sense. Both are incredibly driven by their visions and uncompromising, which didnt go over as well with Pink Floyd.
The Who seemed much more willing to let Pete do his thing.
I assumed most on this board would pick Pete but curious to see how many picked Roger and their reasons why.Forced to endure, what I cannot forgive.0 -
In his book he talks about how exciting it was to see other bands in their early days: the Stones, the Kinks, Pink Floyd. He says that the first time he saw Pink Floyd perform he thought that Waters would eventually become the band's creative force.rearviewross wrote:Who Princess wrote:Do you really need to guess who I'd say?

Waters. I love me some Who, but Floyd is on another level.Bright eyed kid: "Wow Typo Man, you're the best!"
Typo Man: "Thanks kidz, but remembir, stay in skool!"0 -
Too close to call. I dig some Who, but Floyd is in my top 3, both my personal list and my list of all time bands. Not to take anything away from the other members of the Who or their musical personalities, but I think Waters had quite a bit more help in pushing and expanding his vision, so I'll go with Townsend. It came down to Quadrophenia vs The Wall for me and Quad edges it out ever so slightly.0

Some good points. Quad vs The Wall, that is kind of the comparison I was thinking of. Both made epic concept albums. Tommy and Dark Side too.Forced to endure, what I cannot forgive.0 -

Actually, Pete MADE the other guys contribute their own songs to albums b/c song royalties was where the money was at in those days. The producers and record execs weren't initially keen on that idea and other than Entwistle for a bit, either were the band.
Roger LOOKS to Pete to write stuff for him (including some of his solo stuff). And, over the years Pete has admitted writing for Roger's voice without even realizing it.
And the answer to the question is - Pete Townshend. Waters is awesome, no doubt. But, Townshend contributed to music in so many ways that folks don't even realize - Quadrophonic sound!!!! Ha, ha - but, no, really. There's a ton of stuff he's done in the background of music (other than his writing) that others never even dreamed of. And besides, EC might not be with us today if it wasn't for Pete. So, on that score alone, Pete for the win!Sorry. The world doesn't work the way you tell it to.0 -

There's a Quadrophenia documentary where Townshend actually talks about getting the idea of quadrophonic sound from Pink Floyd's live show.0 -

I watched that show, it was pretty cool. I got a lot of insight into The Who from that movie. He wanted to record it in quadrophonic but it became too difficult, the technology just wasn't quite there yet or something like that.Forced to endure, what I cannot forgive.0 -
