who have seen PJ 30, 40, 60, 100 times.....is the magic still there whenever you see a show or does it ever feel like you've seen about all you can see from the band and that it's maybe more about seeing old friends and such that you've met over the years. Just curious since I haven't had the luxury of seeing that many shows.

Well, I've only seen them half of 30 times, but I think since you can't catch them nearly as often as you used to be able to, it's definitely extremely exciting, especially in the Northeast because it's a fact that they step up their game when they come here. We're very lucky and spoiled when it comes to that.

I have not seen them as many as others either, but including Vedder shows, maybe 20ish. And I agree, once those lights go down its like the first time but better. I love it when they play sing-a-long songs where you know your part is coming up. I have gone back to back a couple times, and each time the show is different where I saw U2 a few years ago back to back and it was still awesome, but it was the EXACT same show and not as exciting. There is something magical about these guys. I listen to them all the time at the gym, car, work, etc.... and never gets old. Then to hear Alive, its like I have never heard it before. I don't think it can get old. Going to work the next day is the sucky part!!!

Agreed about the NE too. I have seen them in NY and Philly and the crowds just ROCK, especially compared to the crew here in MN and the west coast.

its still exciting but what i'm finding that although each show is different it's not different enough. what i mean by that is i went to three shows in a row. the core of the set list was heard 2 and three times at each venue. yes there were some different songs and the odd rarity but because the core is mostly the same it is losing something for me. when i saw them back to back at the gte centre (pine knob) in i believe 03 they played 61 songs over the two nights and the guys on the radio were even in awe that only one of them was the same. i would like to see more of that practice vs playing some different ones from a set core of songs. so as i say in three nights on the third night other than the songs not played previously it can get a little predictable and makes them more like other touring bands. but they still change it up more than any other band but just not as much as they used to. where as with springsteen who used to play different set lists every night when i first saw him in 78 even through 81 now if you are lucky he changes maybe 5 songs per night and 75 percent of the show is the same and it gets very boring unless you are the fanatic where every note is amazing.

I've said this before..... The shows are like Christmas to me :D
The excitement and anticipation counting down the months, weeks, days till the show! Oh how I love it!
    :D
I'm giddy thinking about the possibility of a new tour :D:D:D

My mom asked me many many years ago why I spend so much money seeing the same band over and over?
My reply... " For the memories "
I've been so very lucky to have so many great ones and I hope many many more are to come.

It's so hard to give a general answer, you gotta see what each people think but personally I can't stand hearing Betterman, Jeremy Evenflow etc. EF and Alive aren't SO bad because of the jamming cos it's always different etc but the more common structured songs like just breathe are boring as hell. Or that might be down to me hearing many many bootlegs. Their setlists have more of a spine in recent years.

yes yes you may think don't go to the shows if its boring etc etc blahblah but it's not THAT bad obviously.

I haven't quite gotten to the numbers you mentioned - I've seen the band 24 times, and solo and side projects maybe 10 times on top of that - but I'm answering you anyway. :)

Within a few months in 2003 I went to 14 shows in two countries, which was a lot for me. No, it did not get old. Each shows is about the crowds, the people you meet, the lights, the space, the venue, the banter, the camaraderie between the band members, the possibility that they might play some rare song.

I've walked out of shows and heard people saying, "Wow, that was the most amazing concert I've ever seen," right after hearing someone saying, "Wow that sucked." A show is about what you bring into it and what you come out with. A concert, any concert, can change you, and that remains as true for me now as it was 15 years ago.

I saw them in Missoula in 2012 and it was my first Pearl Jam concert since 2006 and as soon as they walked out on stage... Wow I'd missed that. It had been far too long. And I'm saving up to go on the next tour, as many shows as I can afford.

I'm the opposite. The memories are great but I want to re-experience that wave of energy as often as possible. I don't want to have to rely on memories so I try to see as them as many times as possible. :D

I've seen them 30+, but I don't remember how many more than 30 unless I go back and count. It has always been awesome, and I know it always will be. I'm at a time in my life though, where I don't have as much disposable funds, and time, so it is good that I don't feel like I need to see them 8x per tour anymore. (I did that one tour, I think it was 2006) I think now 2x per tour is fine. It is still great though - I've NEVER been to a bad Pearl Jam show, EVER. Such a thing doesn't exist.

  • the element of surprise in the setlist is what has kept me a touring fan of this band, for so many years(since 1996)

knowing that anything can happen at any time has made it wild journey x 10

and btw, there's no need for me to document here how many shows i've been to...

it just gets better and better - the more shows I go to the more friends I make - comes a point where you're surrounded by people you love while the band you love is playing for all of you together!

and road trips - bumping into friends on the street in a strange city - meeting people from the board for the first time even though you've been talking to them for over 15 years

there's a lot of love in this big circle - and although we get old it never does!!
    we're all sentient snowflakes
  • Some interesting discussion here. The reason I brought up the question was seeing the thread about songs that the band should put away and folks upset with setlists being fairly similar over the last year or so. Made me wonder if maybe some had just plain seen too many shows and things were starting to go a little stale, especially if seeing the band many times on a tour and hearing a lot of the same songs on a regular basis.

I personally think hearing songs like Better Man and Alive and Jeremy are great but I also haven't had the opportunity to follow the band around for mutiple shows where you get them regularly.

after 48 shows I still feel like a kid on christmas morning when I open up my 10c tickets and feel even better when the house lights dim and the band starts to walk towards the stage. the anticipation of the first notes are upon us....what will the opener be? it never gets old.
I'll ride the wave where it takes me......
  • Well after seeing them just once, as you can imagine I think I am going to spontaneiously combust if I ever get to see them again, I just hope they don't do a greatest hits show... I want to see some rare/obscure stuff...Oh well I can keep dreaming

I don't think I'll ever rack up 30 shows but I would given the opportunity. I know from the sheer number of boots I've listened to that the element of surprise is still there even if the sets have a slight air of predictability but when showtime comes you accept everything they give you. I remember speaking to someone in Manchester who's just seen as many shows as me with but was delighted to have finally heard Black. This was my 4th show in a row hearing it. That's the beauty of going to PJ shows no matter how many because there will always be something you still need to hear and it's really satisfying getting to hear something you wished to hear at your first show further down the line. It's crazy the amount of fairly common songs I've not heard yet I've had some cracking rarities. Meeting people at the shows is great but the excitement is when the lights go down and I don't think I could get bored with that ever....

  • It's magic for me every time. Never counted how many times I have seen the band or Eddie live, but it's never enough. It's not just the show - once you know you have tickets it's also the anticipation building up to it. Can't wait to feel that again. I actually miss the lines waiting to pick up tickets - met some great people on those lines. Last time I remember doing that was Uniondale 2003.
