I wouldn't be surprised to see a Townsville or Hobart date on the next tour

    Did somebody say TOWNSVILLE??!?!?!?!?!?!?

Better men convince Pearl Jam to rock city
    By The Word's AMY EDWARDS

THREE diehard Pearl Jam fans had almost given up hope of getting the international rock band to perform in Newcastle, until yesterday.

Rob Wilson, 24, Mark Waddingham, 23, and Andrew McCallum, 25, began an online petition in early May to get Pearl Jam to perform in Newcastle as part of their forthcoming Australian tour.

Within days, they had 250 signatures and this week more than 2200 people, mostly from the Hunter, had signed the petition.

Tour promoter Michael Coppel released a statement yesterday claiming that due to huge public demand "spearheaded by a petition signed by thousands . . . Pearl Jam will be rocking Newcastle".

In what will be Pearl Jam's first concert in Newcastle and its only regional show, the band will perform at Newcastle Entertainment Centre on Sunday, November 19.

The Newcastle show was a last-minute addition to the 2006 tour.

"I certainly hadn't given up and neither had the guys involved [but] it was starting to get late for an announcement," Mr McCallum said.

The trio, who have been fans of the group since high school and even sport a couple of Pearl Jam tattoos, attracted early support from surfing legend Mark Richards, a friend of Eddie Vedder, Pearl Jam's lead singer.

Richards regularly emailed Pearl Jam's tour manager Mark Smith and kept him updated on the plight of the men and their petition.

However, the surfing legend said it was "really the effort the guys put in to harassing Coppel" that got the band to Newcastle.

Where I come from nothing’s given… yeah, yeah, yeah, I resent nepotism.

Call me a cynic… but I can’t help but think that Newcastle wouldn’t have even come close to eventuating if it weren’t for the Mark Richards connection…

That said... I'll be at the show!

I think that too re Mark Richards....but it doesn't matter who or why...At least they got the show! I just wish I could go too........stupid fucking records store sucking up all our fucking money!!

HEY!!! WHO WANTS TO SIGN MY PETITION TO GET PJ TO SIGN RECORDS AT LEIGH'S RECORD STORE IN TOWNSVILLE!?!?!?!? :D

No offense, but you guys only got 2200 signatures?

I think last tour (2003) there was a petition around New Zealand with many more sigs than that but they never came. I'd have to say the Mark Richards thing definitely helped. Well, who knows, it's probably much cheaper and easier to play Newcastle than Auckland. I wonder if the band had any input? I think I really need to get in touch with the Finns, they can pull some strings, for sure!

To be honest, I didn't think that just over 2000 would be enough names. However I am sure that the following things influenced the outcome

    MR's support and help
    MR speaking to EV
    EV's support
NewFM's support and pressure on Coppel
    The Herald's support
The fact that the date had been booked well in advance, but obviousely Coppel was unsure if it would sell

These facts along with a name or 2000 certainly didn't hurt in getting a gig in Newcastle.

I don't think it's too late for NZ, just because the original venue is out of the question, there may be moves to organise a seperate venue. Unfortunately getting information out of hte promoters is like sqeezing blood from a rock.

Good Luck though, my names been on your petition since the start. I'd love to go to NZ.

Gees theres 480,000 ppl in Tasmania why cant they come here.....
Wouldnt the Band have more input into where they tour than Coppel?
Newcastle has Mark Richards... Tasmania/Hobart has Shipsterns Bluff...
Come on guys u know u want to tour here.....:)

Anyone else excited the Foos are gonna tour?, what would be even better is if it's and Acoustic tour like they have been doing in the states ATM.

Sorry, now back to talking bout Newcastle.
