I would think every band would want their PJ moment-being one of the greatest rock bands of the last 20 yrs. The pumpkins were pretty good but Billy Corgan is just looking for a pub grab.

I used to love the Smashing Pumpkins. But I saw them right after D'arcy Wretzky left the band. Corrigan's voice was so exposed without D'arcy backing him on vocals. I don't know if he had the other female singers help in this area in the future because I never saw them again. The simple facts of why Pearl Jam is still relevant and SP isn't is that PJ remained a band and the Pumpkins didn't. I am sure if Pumpkins still had D"arcy, James Iha and Chamberlain (is he still with the band?) they would have much more fans. That being said, Siamese Dream was a great album.
I still don't know what it means to be "relevant" when people say that, but I'd say most people who are not pearl jam fans like we are also say the same thing about them. 90% of the people who loved Ten didn't know they were still together until Backspacer and all the promotion that was done.
I just don't see the Pumpkins playing any corporate gigs or making walmart commercials (nothing wrong with that, but I'm just saying).

You know why you don't see those things happening for the Pumpkins ... because no one is asking them to do it

Not to turn this into a Billy vs. Eddie debate, but the people on this board don't realize how close Eddie is to jumping the shark and becoming Billy's equal. Oceania is a solid album, it flows much better than Backspacer and there are parts of brilliance that resemble Pumpkins of old. Nothing on Backspacer or Avacado for that fact remind me why I loved PJ in the first place. Billy turned grumpy and started insulting his fans, Ed put on a suit, grabbed a Uke and started hanging out with all the people his old, powerful songs were written about. Not much difference if you look closely.....

I'd say "relevant" means that people still care about what's going on with them, or how much other bands look at them as an influence. PJ's relevance has stemmed from their popularity as a live act for well over a decade now.
I don't necessarily think there's anything wrong with the commercials, but it is kinda sad that PJ kinda flushed some of their past stances down the toilet and it hasn't really gained them anything.

You may be right, but I'd say while Ten-Riot Act all sounded different they all had some common qualities running through them, which S/T has very little of and on BS it's nonexistent. They just sound like a different band. I'm all for a band moving forward but there are certain qualities that define the best bands and PJ seems to have lost that with the last couple albums. If I had a guess I would say that they are working less as a unit than they used to and I'm not talking about side projects. I'm referring to the time that they are working "together". They've always had different members bringing ideas in, but they always managed to make everything much more cohesive than they have with the last couple albums.
Oceania is half of a good album. The first half is reminiscent of the Pumpkins of old, but drops off big time in the second half.
I'm not a huge fan of Backspacer, but in no way is it worse than Oceania.
And so you see, I have come to doubt All that I once held as true I stand alone without beliefs The only truth I know is you.
Billy has an insult about Eddie or the band every year. He must really be jealous or something. It must drive him crazy that Eddie and the band are more popular in Chicago than him or his band. And you never hear anything bad from Eddie about Billy. Eddie's thought process is probably like "Dude, I had Kurt Cobain hurling insults at us for a few years. You're never gonna get to me. Get over it."
Do you know what it's like to fall in the mud and get kicked... in the head... with an iron boot? Of course you don't, no one does. It never happens. Sorry, Ted, that's a dumb question... skip that.

I cant remember every time Billy said something bad about Eddie or the band but I can remember him putting down Eddie for the Chicago Cubs song a few years ago. He just seems to have something against them.

He said something about Eddie back in August that made headlines.
“The first line on ‘Siamese Dream’ is, ‘Freak out and give in, doesn’t matter what you believe in’. I’m saying it right from the beginning, it’s like, ‘It doesn’t matter what happens because you’re living an illusion.’”
Corgan went on to say that anyone who believes “Eddie Vedder was that person and Kurt Cobain was that person and Trent Reznor was that person, is a lie. They were parts of those people, but they weren’t the people they were projecting them to be. When you get picked out in a line in school and you’re the weird one, I’m the weird one, and I’m still here.”

saying you don't like someone isn't technically an insult?
I think that's closer to a compliment than an insult, and he's pretty right on about the Cubs song there. Not that the song ruined the Cubs chances, but Eddie Vedder is about the biggest fraud Cubs fan there is.
I agree with a lot of the things that have been said thus far. SP in the Gish and Siamese Dream era were great. Oceania is a decent effort but I disagree with Corgan's assertions that he could write material like those albums again but somehow that is beneath him. I also think that Backspacer and Avocado are much better than Oceania, but to each their own.
I wanted to make this post because for the second straight show Billy's inferiority complex made an appearance. I was among the 5000 people at the SP show in Calgary last night. It was entertaining and worth seeing in my opinion. At one point Billy said something to a man in the GA section that went like this... "Hey angry guy, go back to the '90s. Angry guy comes to every show (angry guy is now shouting something back to Billy and giving him a one fingered salute). Angry guy go back to the '90s, Eddie Vedder is there wearing uhh... (The audience helps him come up with the term) flannel. Go back to the '90s, Vedder's there waiting in flannel and a goatee." He then chuckles about his presumed comedic genius.
I don't understand his self-made conflict with Pearl Jam. In my opinion, it just makes him sound ridiculous. If he has reached some higher musical level than any other human why can't he just let us suffer in our misery? I guess musical nirvana must be a lonely place, population 1, Mr. Billy Corgan.
I saw the SP in Milwaukee a week or so ago and they played a 2.5 hour set with one ten minute break. The show was incredible. I don't mind the new band at all.

I agree with you. BC is just making a fool of himself. It's like he's obsessed with rejecting the 90s, which btw are what made him rich and famous, but also it doesn't make any sense. No one is obsessed with the 90s except him, apparently.... he's obsessed about people being obsessed with the 90s when no one actually is. I think he's just a fucking douchebag hipster, judging from his stupid comments, on top of the inferiority complex that you mentioned, and which couldn't be more obvious. It's kind of embarrassing. It's also annoying to see someone with potential just be an a-hole for no apparent reason. Plus, why in the fuck does he keep lipping off his fans??? That is unappealing to say the least. And the album isn't very good IMO, which is fine, except he's acting like Liam-fucking-Gallagher about it.
