Billy Corgan makes funny comment about PJ at Winnipeg show

On October 2nd at the Pumpkins show, Billy got tired of seeing people crowd-surfing, so just as Zero was about to get underway, he yelled at the band to stop, and he addressed the crowd, and I'm paraphrasing:

"Back in 1994, there was a network called MTV that used to play music videos. I was doing an interview and I was talking about how crowd surfing is so old and dated already. I don't want anyone to get hurt. I know everyone wants to have their Pearl Jam moment, but the next person that comes over the wall gets turfed. That shit is so old. I want everyone to go home safe.”

Oh Billy, you never get old!

If the music being played merits crowdsurfing, it'll happen. Zero is definitely a song I would associate with crowdsurfing. I rarely, if ever, hear of a crowdsurfing-related injury, other than a scrape or bruise. I haven't done it in years, but music brings out primal urges in people, and as long as it's not hurting anyone/seriously disrupting the show, I'll accept it.

Saw SP last year in Houston and Billy didn’t like the energy in the room so said (paraphrasing) he was going to play a Pearl Jam song to get us singing and into the concert…funny. Oh he didn’t play any PJ.

There's always the option of seated venues, if that's Billy's sort of thing.
  • he bitches when people don't move.
he bitches when they DO move.

    come on, billy.

you have been instigating and talking shit about your fans worse than Trent Reznor for two decades now.
Just let people do what the fuck they do.

I'm sorry they don't all stand still like the emo-kids and just barely move their heads.

yeah, he seems to flip flop quite a bit. He goes from "I love James Iha" to "James Iha is the worst human being on the planet" depending on the day. He needs to embrace consistency or shut up.

I guess they had to cancel their Vancouver, BC show due to poor ticket sales. So, they announced a surprise show in Missoula on that day. Not playing the same venue though...

I can't comment on that seeing as I haven't heard Oceania. Is anyone that's still in the band original outside of Billy anymore?

good god, I remember that. wasn't there also a video of when they were "writing songs" together, with him sitting at the piano and her being super annoying and flashy as usual?

the gig in vienna last year was decent, but the first and only time he adressed the audience was when they came out for the encore. so it's either bitchfest or the silent treatment these days...not sure which I prefer. I appreciate the record club, the re-issues and other things he installed nowadays, but this is just not MY band anymore. SP were my favorite for most of my teenage years, so this sort of hurts, but he has a bad case of axl rose syndrome.

yes, REALLY DUDE. I mean, it depends how you look at it. Does backspacer have some stronger singles? Sure, but Oceania is a more consistent and stronger record as a whole.

there isn't synth on every song. they played every song live the other night, and it came into play in maybe two songs. that was it. I hate 80's music, and there's one song on Teargarden that is pretty much all synth that I hate just because of that. But in some songs it's tolerable, and may even have a place. It depends if it takes centre stage or if it's just the intro or background in a song as opposed to front and centre, which is what 80's music was, it essentially took the guitar out and put the synth in. GARBAGE.

You make some very good points, the synth is more background music on Oceania rather than replacing guitars, but it still does'nt have a place in any of those songs. I'm sure the album sounds better live than it does on the album like you said but thats probably due to them not having the sythn incorporated in 80% of the songs. Hell even Billy vocals sound stale like he is'nt even into singing his own material anymore. Maybe its just me but thats my take on it. No offence to your opinion though, to each their own.

yeah, it's odd, as he seemed to want so bad to ram this album down everyone's throats, but he didn't seem into it at ALL until they finished that portion of the show and got into the classics. maybe he's even rethinking this decision to play it front to back live, as he does with most of his decisions.

actually, live the other night, except for his "don't hurt anyone by crowd surfing" and "wake the fuck up" rants that seemed to contradict one another, he was incredibly humble and thankful towards the crowd the whole night. it was a side of him I had not seen before.

maybe he was grateful for the 3,000 people that actually showed up to a 13,000 seat venue.

I got kicked in the face by a crowdsurfer one time and I fuckin loved it. Billy would complain about a blowjob. Lost my buddy's Budweiser hat when I got kicked and after all of us getting separated during the show we meet back up after the show and his nephew somehow ended up with the hat.

I agree. Billy C does seem more inspired these days than just about any other musician from the 90s. I don't even mind the synth that much. Do I wish he was writing more stuff with the crushing guitar of Gish more often. Hell yeah!! But on the other hand I'd rather him be honest than force something he's not feeling. Do wish he'd get Jimmy C back. His drumming could take Oceania to another level.

Some pretty funny Billy insults so far

You know what i respect him for playing it back to front live. However even on the album his vocals dont sound like they are in the same state of mind as the guy who wrote the songs. (He was bored with what he made by the time he recorded)

Billy Corgan is a bit of a doofus these days. He got weird(er) and not in a good way.

I think the new album is only okay at best. Not good enough for me to buy .... but man, I played Mellon Collie until it was worn out. I don't think of the SP as a relevant or even a likeable band anymore though... just my own feeling about them.

I used to love the Smashing Pumpkins. But I saw them right after D'arcy Wretzky left the band. Corrigan's voice was so exposed without D'arcy backing him on vocals. I don't know if he had the other female singers help in this area in the future because I never saw them again. The simple facts of why Pearl Jam is still relevant and SP isn't is that PJ remained a band and the Pumpkins didn't. I am sure if Pumpkins still had D"arcy, James Iha and Chamberlain (is he still with the band?) they would have much more fans. That being said, Siamese Dream was a great album.
