after hearing the studio version of yellow ledbetter on 50-50 (movie), I'm falling back in love with the studio version of yl...

i've heard so much live pj through the years that the studio versions are now taking on the meaning that live pj used to have. it's rare. we don't hear it often enough!

I know it's blasphemy but I hate YL live. It's not even close to the same song. Mike's playing is awesome but I like to sing along (as much of the words as I know lol) and he just makes shit up as he goes. I love pretty much every other song live better but if I think there's no more songs after YL, I'll head to the car.
  • I never get tired of the studio version either. The live version doesn't get me real excited. Studio sounds great in 7.1 Surround.

I find that too, about listening to the live so much, that I forgot what the recorded version sounds like.

yellow ledbetter, what I think, is mikes tribute to jimi hendrix he does alot of improvising and just going crazy like jimi used to do. I love it either way.

my son has grown up on the pj bootlegs...of all songs "i am mine" and "off he goes" were his first favs...

then by the time he was 12(he now 14)... he was up late enough to hear the entire shows i'd jam...

he discovered his love for yellow led...and it soon became one of his favs...

then one day it was on the radio and he was shocked to what he was hearing...

so i had to bust out the jeremy single...and he didn't like the studio yl version at all...
Even after i explained that i played it upteen thousands of times b4 i got to hear the live!!!

i was sick...What did i do to the poor kid??? :fp: :fp:

That's an awesome story. I think about sharing the band w/ my kids if/when I have them.

It is interesting to remember how strange Yellow Ledbetter was. It was a b-side for a single, not an acutal single. But it received significant radio play, yet a majority of radio listeners couldn't find it because they didn't know what album/single it was on.

I remember friends calling into to the radio to request it just because they didn't know where to find it to listen to it whenever they wanted. Hard to believe in the age of itunes.

It used to pulled out occassionally as a closer, now I would say it is the default closer for concerts. I love the song, but as all songs it looses a little of its speciality the more I hear it. Now adays I would rather hear a different closer, but it is still an amazing song and it is one of the few closers that is an actual pearl jam song and not a cover. I would still rather hear YL than Fuckin' Up.

    anyway just my $.02

I would never say that I hate YL live, but I'm not that into it (though good lord, I would certainly never leave early when they started playing it - it's got that bittersweet end-of-the-show feeling for me now). EXCEPT, except except except, for that 1997 Tibetan Freedom Concert version, just Mike and Ed. That's pretty much my favorite thing ever. It's a whole other level of awesome, and blows not only any other live version out of the water but also the studio version (which I also quite like). That version puts YL easily in my top 10 PJ songs, whereas otherwise it probably wouldn't even break the top 50.

It's fun remembering that feeling of hearing a song you love on the radio and not having any other way to hear it. Before I got my hands on the Jeremy single, I remember always trying to tape YL off the radio when they played it (which they did, a lot. Ahhh, Boston radio of my youth).

I listen to the boots almost exclusively. So much, that beyond Vitalogy, I'm not sure which song is on which album. When I do finally listen to a studio album, I find myself saying "Hmm, I thought this song was on album x, or I totally forgot about this song because they never play it live".

Last week, I found myself trying to figure out which album "Long Road" is on.
Then I discovered that I don't even own it.

I like the early live versions of YL the best. Yes, that Tibetan Freedom Concert version is really good. I also like the live version from Arizona 93, I think. That was the one on the Daughter single, right? Great version.

I always liked the studio version and think the current live rendention would be better as just an instrumental.

I agree with this statement across the board... Whenever im listening to xm pj radio, Im most excited when they play a studio track. After all these years, all of these bootlegs, I need the best sound and production possible, and that is found on the studio albums. Pretty much can't listen to live pj anymore, unless im there of course.
Further back and forth a wave will break on me, today...

I'm with you. Live on 2 Legs was one of the first PJ albums I got and after I wore that out the 2000 boots were just coming around and I wore out my copy of my first show. I've always like the intricasies of the studio stuff but I seldom put on a live show aside from the occasional reliving of shows I've witnessed.

I"m sick of YLB. It's a great song, but enough already. I can't believe they think it's awesome to close with the same song over and over and over and over and over and over again. I wish they would stop playing it for a good long while - I listen to a full concert at least a few times a week. I'd like to be surprised by the end sometimes.

Also, I hope they start doing more cool new covers again or a really regular basis.

I don't know about the rest of the Euro '12 boots, but the Amsterdam #1 and #2 are stellar.

Just downloaded #1, and listened to #2 on Sirius today.

Yellow Ledbetter is a truly magical song and the perfect closer to a show - It's almost like a hymn, it's not about the words really, but more about the feeling. However it is overused - Be nice to see a variety of closers on a tour and only the occasional YL...

It seems YL & Alive & Even Flow are absolute staples in the PJ set these days
