Palm Muting?

So what's the secret behind this? Why can't I get it? Either it's too muted or sounds like crap when I do it. Please help!

Best way is to practice it switching between open chords and finding the right balance !! Not too hard not too soft!!! Like driving a standard car if u drive one!! And practice practice

Thank you - yeah, for some reason, I can't get that perfect in-between sound. I'll keep practicing!

work on RITFW,
thats a REAL good one for palm muting.
you can pretty much PM the entire verse through the whole song and make it sound pree-cool.
try PMing the e chord, but then letting up a bit on the mute for the D and C.

or whatevs.

Thanks man, I was working on Wishlist. Tried it in the past and it beyond frustrated me. Been working on it some more lately and it sounds a little better, just not great.

watch james hetfield. he has one of the greatest right hands in music. watching him in old live footage was how i figured it out because i could not be bothered with paying for lessons when i was a broke ass college kid.

aside from that, just practice and keep at it.. you will have that "ah- HA!!" moment soon enough.

Thanks guys. I really appreciate all of the advice.

I was playing around with it last night and if I rest the side of my hand up against the saddle, it sounds pretty decent at times. Is this too far back to put my hand?

no not too far back. i put mine just in front of the saddle. just be sure that the meaty part of the pinky side of your hand is what is doing the muting.

In order to achieve that sound, I would think its somewhat intrinsic that your hand "knows" it has to do something in order to stop the ringing vibration and sound of the strings, and/or to get that
choppy staccato effect. No?

am I cheating?

does it matter?

There are certain instances where I feel like that's the appropriate guitar move, but it's kind of a different thing from palm muting.

No. the left hand is usually the non-strumming hand. the hand that presses down the strings.
