I think it would be pretty amazing....

Jeff Buckley's version may be the greatest cover of any song EVER.

How do you think Ed would sing this one?

Jeff's version brings tears to my eyes. Better than the original...

If I ever heard Ed sing this, you would hear me sobbing from the crowd, lol..

 Definitely one he could do at his solo concerts. But I'm sure he would forget the words.

As much as I'd like to hear Ed do this, I don't think anyone should touch this song after Jeff's version (of course, Leonard has full access to do it).

SO agree with you Jeff's cover is better than the original in my honest opinion.. Saw Jeff at the Enmore in Sydney on his one and only Australian tour, and he sang it and it blew my mind !!!!! AWESOME

It could be okay, but honestly, compared to KD Lang's version, even Eddie would pale in comparison with this song. I seriously think that her version is one of the most beautiful songs ever sung by anyone. Seriously. Goose bumps, tears in the eyes heart falling put of your chest fucking beautiful. Notice that LeonardbCohen is in the audience in this vid, and I think he feels the same way. Oh man, I cannot even get over this song .http://m.youtube.com/results?q=kd%20lan ... YiMJ2bC65A

    Oh GEEZ, please no.

If I never hear the Jeff Buckley version again, it'll be too soon.

I don't think anyone can do a better version than Jeff Buckley. There was a really crappy one by some pop singer a few years back that almost ruined the song for me.

Great song - and not an easy one to sing - and the Jeff Buckley version is the best I know BUT it's been done to death, it doesn't need any more covers
I don't mean to offend anyone, a lot of what I say should be taken with a grain of salt... that said for most of you I'm a stranger on a computer on the other side of the world, don't give me that sort of power!

Wouldn't mind terribly if Ed adds it to his solo shows here and there, but for me, Jeff's will always be the best.
  • I would love to hear Ed do this. Is it just me or does anyone else think that Ed is a man of faith? The song he did to honor B.Springstein at the Kennedy center made me think this.
  • As much as I love this song and as much as Ed would perform the shit out of it...

it's just way too over done. I mean there's Jeff Buckly's cover, Rufus Wainright, and i'm pretty sure it's the most covered song by amature performers on Youtube. I play this song, but I never play it when I have a gig. I play it s more of a campfire song, like a good sing along with friends sort of song.

So yeah i wouldn't really want the song to be covered again, even if it is Ed

EDIT: and one more thing. If Jeff was still alive today, I would assume (though of course I can never be sure about this) that he and Ed would be good friends and perform together at times and they may duet the song from time to time, that's as far as I would go with Ed's performance of this song.

I would like to see Ed cover this

    I love Ed's speaking voice :D
  • Oh lerdy...I don't think I could handle that.
Everytime I hear that song, no matter WHOSE version it is, I cry.

I think I'd way rather hear Ed do The future or Anthem.

I always wanted ed to do "everybody knows" by Leonard Cohen. Any "Pump up the Volume" fans?

No doubt Ed would do a bloody good job of most songs but this song for me was made for Jeff Buckley. He sings it so woefully and painfully but beautifully, all at the same time. His version was a masterpiece, very hard to out- perform. ;)

Hallelujah or a cover of Suzanne would be something to see, covered by Ed.

I have to agree with this post. This is the most amazing version of this song I have heard. I have always thought that Eddie could do a great job with the song though. Would love to see him give it a try. :)

I think KD Lang's version kicks the Jeff Buckley version's ass all up and down the sidewalk.

EVERYBODY KNOWS that the ONLY Leonard Cohen song Pearl Jam should cover is this one:

    EVERYBODY KNOWS

Everybody knows that the dice are loaded
Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed
Everybody knows that the war is over
Everybody knows the good guys lost
Everybody knows the fight was fixed
The poor stay poor, the rich get rich
    That's how it goes
    Everybody knows
Everybody knows that the boat is leaking
Everybody knows that the captain lied
    Everybody got this broken feeling
Like their father or their dog just died

    Everybody talking to their pockets
Everybody wants a box of chocolates
    And a long stem rose
    Everybody knows

Everybody knows that you love me baby
Everybody knows that you really do
Everybody knows that you've been faithful
Ah give or take a night or two
    Everybody knows you've been discreet
But there were so many people you just had to meet
    Without your clothes
    And everybody knows

    Everybody knows, everybody knows
    That's how it goes
    Everybody knows

    Everybody knows, everybody knows
    That's how it goes
    Everybody knows

And everybody knows that it's now or never
Everybody knows that it's me or you
And everybody knows that you live forever
Ah when you've done a line or two
Everybody knows the deal is rotten
Old Black Joe's still pickin' cotton
    For your ribbons and bows
    And everybody knows

And everybody knows that the Plague is coming
Everybody knows that it's moving fast
Everybody knows that the naked man and woman
Are just a shining artifact of the past
Everybody knows the scene is dead
But there's gonna be a meter on your bed
    That will disclose
    What everybody knows

And everybody knows that you're in trouble
Everybody knows what you've been through
From the bloody cross on top of Calvary
    To the beach of Malibu
    Everybody knows it's coming apart
Take one last look at this Sacred Heart
    Before it blows
    And everybody knows

    Everybody knows, everybody knows
    That's how it goes
    Everybody knows

    Oh everybody knows, everybody knows
    That's how it goes
    Everybody knows

    Everybody knows
I was alone and far away when I heard the band start playing!

Both songs (one mentioned above and that of the OP) would be great covers. :corn:
The thing I like most about time is that it's not real. It's all in the head. Sure, it's a useful trick to use if you want to meet someone at a specific place in the universe and have tea or coffee- but that's all it is- a trick. There is no such thing as the past. It exists only in the memory. There is no such thing as the future. It exists only in our imagination. If our watches were truly accurate, the only thing they would ever say is "Now". That's what time it is. It's "Now". - Damien Echols

what's the point of going for a song that's already been in a definitive manner and can't be improved on?

I agree, she does do a good version too but still like Jeff's. Each to their own. ;)

The world really does not need another cover of this song - even if it was Ed.
