Ed and his strange wobbly jaw.

When did he start doing this? You know the odd side-to-side movement he does usually on slower tempo songs. I don't think I ever noticed it until Come Back on the Immagine In Cornice DVD. It's a little weird... :?

I've noticed this myself. Don't remember seeing him do this prior to 2006.
  • Hmmmmm....
Does this only happen when singing slow ?
Maybe he is voluntarily moving the jaw muscles for an unknown reason.
    Involuntarily it is seen in...
Extrapyramidal symptoms( I see this in psych hospitals )
    Cocaine users display this
    TMJ temporomandibular joint syndrome. Bruxism
Probably none of the above since it happens only during slow songs.
Maybe he is doing it purposely to keep the muscles loose or a technique that provides him with a benefit of some sort.

    Nice thread.

I always saw it as a sign of struggling, maybe just the smoking etc makes it harder to get the right notes out?

EDIT - I just watched it haha and noticed it hard, totally weird. Not sure if it is what I said above, perhaps just an ages thing.

I definately think Ed does it to add some kind of vibrato emphasis to certain words but it doesn't quite work or like you say Ed, maybe he struggles with certain notes? I'm even starting to notice the moments he does it on the boots from last year. I'm going to have to watch some 03 DVD's to see if he did it back then.

Yeah, I've noticed this every now and then while watching some Youtube videos. And you are right, it is during the slow songs like Just Breathe....Interesting...

Guys, I think this is an incredibly insensitive thread. :(

It's like picking someone apart while examining them with a magnifying glass.

How about we just enjoy the fact that he's doing whatever he needs to do to get the song to come out?! :geek:

I wasn't meaning to pick him apart, I just noticed it also. It's not a bad thing, it's just something that he does. Sorry!

    Yes
    Insensitive
    ?
I do not think anybody was lacking sensitivity to Ed's feelings
Just to be safe lets change this thread to ...
Why is it when Dave Matthews sings he makes facial grimaces as if he is straining to defecate ?

Well I'm truly sorry Justam if this subject really offends you but I think you're taking it the wrong way. I'm sure the answer is pretty simple and I didn't bring it up to make fun of Ed. If you look at all the musicians he surrounds himself with it's obvious that somewhere along the way he's going to be influenced by other people's styles so possibly he started doing this on someone's advice or maybe he has started with some kind of cramp in his jaw when he has been singing for a certain length of time and this is an exercise to prevent it? If you listen to him after Vitalogy era you can hear a change in his style and some of that is down to working with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan on Dead Man Walking, without it you wouldn't have Arc. It's noticable on Into The Wild and It Happened Today on the last REM album. All I wanted to know was if anyone noticed when this jaw movement started to see if it started at any particular time that was significant or obvious. People can be too sensitive here, Ed is an axe wielding lumberjack surfing maniac, I don't think he'd be a crybaby if he read this observational post.. ;)
