So the real question...Why is Pearl Jam ignoring the States?

  • So much for the ignorant American, huh? A bunch of you euros seem to be dismissing how large this country is. Look at the geographical distribution of shows here. Gives a bit of perspective. Just because they are touring in the US now and then does not mean the shows are accessible to the average joe here. That is plain fact.

And enjoy overpaying for solo shows. I am sure they are worth it to you.

I don't think anyone is dismissing the size of the USA and I do agree that the fact they haven't played certain areas of the States for a number of years is bad. I guess its the same all over now though, they know (or they think know) where is popular to tour. For example with the UK, they only play London or Manchester when they come over here now. Germany gets Berlin. Canada gets Montreal, Vancouver or Toronto the majority of the time. I guess thats the business sense now. Maybe with EV touring the South, it will persuade the band to do a tour down there sometime soon :)

    Just, not enough.
    I need more.
    Nothing seems to satisfy.
I said, I dont want it.
    I just need it.

  • Because at a certain point money became the most important thing. Like it or not, it is what it is. But that made it a lot easier to not get to see any more shows. All about memories at this point. But I do laugh at people spending 75 bucks plus to see Ed play a damn ukulele. You would shit yourself at what 35 bucks a ticket used to get me.

    This.

Skipping Ed this year... With Bruce, Tom Petty, Radiohead all touring- my money had to make a decision.

$35 used to buy the greatest show on earth. ($100 for a Uke and a stool?)

Now, you cant even afford the Tshirt w/ that.

I've pretty much given up on a real US tour like '98, '00, '03 or even '06. I've also grown frustrated with the planning of tours and the ticketing mess each time around. It's like they'll announce a tour, skip my home town, essentially force me to travel and then add a hometown show a month later. I don't have the energy anymore to try and plan my life around their schedule like I did in years past. If they play a Northern California show this year I'm 100% in. But I'm done traveling, I guess I'm just getting old, or maybe it's the fact that I've seen so many shows in so many places. Either way I don't stress on them like so many people on this board do. They are adults with families and have accomplished pretty much everything you can in music. I can see how it's become a hobby to them rather than a job. They will never get back to the level of creativity they showed between say '93 and '96, they had something to prove then, it's life, everybody grows and evolves. I'm just happy they are still together and I still get to see them play live, even if it's only once every few years. People need to relax and just enjoy the ride.

I'm the opposite. I'm sick of going to shows here in the Northeast and would much rather travel. I mean I've seen them in a bunch of different states but it's so much more fun visiting a new city. Makes it more special.

As long as they play North America I'm happy. Traveling to Montreal last year was great. Wish I could have made Toronto work, too.

It seems fairly clear to me...the band simply doesn't like to tour much anymore. They do it out of obligation, but they soften the displeasure of it by going places that have great crowds, are guaranteed to sell out and that are fun to explore during off days (Eddie goes surfing...). Also, and I recognize that I could catch alot of shit for this, I dont think Eddie's voice can do massive tours anymore. The songs he sings during the solos shows are a much better fit for his vocal range now, and lets face it, singing the majority of PJ songs involves going outside his comfort range, hence they are tuning alot of songs down a half step.

Completely disagree. They are at a point where the do what they want and with the way their famalies are they don't want to be away from home as much as they did when they didn't have kids. If they want to play 20 shows they will, if they want to play 50 they will. It's all what they are feeling. They aren't under any pressure to do anything.

I kinda agree with you...they dont like touring for a variety of reasons, one of them being family obligations. I would be willing to wager that no one "wants" to do a 50 show tour again. ever. Of course they decide what the tours will be...but touring and merchandise is how most of their money is made, so I would disagree that they dont feel pressure, everyone has gotta pay their bills!

I think you are onto something there. Lately I have been avoiding shows in Philly, which, to me, can be stressful to get to. I enjoyed the roadtrip to Alpine, we made a nice trip out of it. I also like to see shows that are here in Reading, PA - arena is about 5 minutes from home, much much easier to go to.

    I agree with RM22.

It's none my business about their money (which I'm sure they have plenty just from the Ten era alone) or what they choose to do. I choose to continue enjoying their music. I pay to belong to the fan club, for tickets, and to travel to concerts. IDK, I guess I just don't get the bitching. It's not that big of a deal. They're still making music for fuck's sake, let alone putting on shows! Whatever they need to do to keep doing that- let them be. We should be happy for that alone.

Just a thought, but listening to the Canadian bootlegs from last year, followed by the bootlegs from South America, I think the sporadic touring might have something to do with the vocal strain on Eddie. There is absolutely a large difference in his voice between the beginning and end of a tour these days, and that's on tours with not all that many dates.
    '05 - TO, '06 - TO 1, '08 - NYC 1 & 2, '09 - TO, Chi 1 & 2, '10 - Buffalo, NYC 1 & 2, '11 - TO 1 & 2, Hamilton, '13 - Buffalo, Brooklyn 1 & 2, '15 - Global Citizen, '16 - TO 1 & 2, Chi 2

It happens to all singers. You just don't listen to other bands boots from the beginning to the end of tours. His voice is just fine, but of course you are right that from beginning to end his voice will weaken after all there are hard songs in there vocally that they do.

I think being away from home is the overwhelming factor. That and they all have other projects they work on and enjoy doing. There is only so much time in a year.
