Mixing process for boots
I was wondering what process goes into the boots?
Listening to some of the SA boots, some shows (Buenos Aires, for example) sound much louder than others (Rio, for example). Matt's drums some much louder than normal - listen to Hail Hail - and you can hear Stone's guitar alot more than Mike's, especially when he is playing acoustic.
It got me thinking about the process and do the shows get manipulated in anyway? On some does the mix on the band or crowd get turned up or lowered for shows? Do they make the crowd sound louder at certain shows? I've not listened to it, but I've heard that on Belfast '10 the crowd doesn't sound loud on the boot but at the gig it was - did they mix the crowd on the boot to sound lower?

This is a question you should send directly to Kufala. Every thing but they tell you would be speculation. I think there is a email link to them when buying a boot. If you do get an answer I would love to hear what they say. Oh and ask why they dont just record begining to end. I understand cutting the Encore break short but just leave the rest alone

Kufala have nothing to do with the recording or mixing of the boots.0

This is a good point Don, I love that the 2000 boots are done like this. Part of the intro is included on the SA boots and the encore breaks are like 20 seconds long for some reason.Spencer wrote:Kufala have nothing to do with the recording or mixing of the boots.

I hope with all the time that's gone by from Alpine and with no boots as of yet, that they make that weekend a masterpiece in terms of the mixing process. And I hope they don't mix down the crowd, because it was so loud that weekend.......especially during Release.

Since 2000 they have pretty much eliminated the feel that there was actually a crowd. Please bring that back. I know it was a way of eliminating the high pitched whistlers and song shouters but come on.
They have to know we love the 2000 boots, so why not do whatever was done for that tour?Member 164xxx

I have most of the 2000 boots and I think they sound awesome. 03 are great too, but I don't think they're quite as ballsy as the 2000. All the others I've heard are pretty hit or miss. Even when it's mixed ok they can still kinda sound thin. I wonder sometimes if the band just doesn't sound as good as they used to. I know they switch up gear about every tour. I'm sure there is more than one reason why the boots don't seem to translate that well from the actual shows.Post edited by DewieCox on0 -

Some of the early European boots from 2000 do sound quite low in the mix. I can't listen to the Katowice shows. But the North America ones definitely soundi great. I love the 2000 boots though.
2003 is fantastic also, I've got about 20 or so of them and they don't disappoint. The only ones that do from '03 are the Japan ones I think, not sure what was going on with them. Bonner Springs is the best I've heard.
2006 I think is good and I like 2008, though I know alot don't.
Maybe its the mix or the band but I don't think 2009 & 2010 are that great, from the ones I've actually listened too.2000: Manchester

agree, the loudest crowd I heard in a boot (not in a live concert) its mexico's first 2003 concert, just awesome0 -
I'd have almost no crowd noise on the boots if it were up to me...
2000 is the gold standard, they've never sounded better.
They don't, so there's that. Chunkier guitar tones back in 2000 and Vedder's pipes were in much better shape. I don't think the band has sounded consistently great since 2006.DewieCox wrote:All the others I've heard are pretty hit or miss. Even when it's mixed ok they can still kinda sound thin. Personally I think Ed's voice sounded Rather 'Flat' and 'Tired' in 2000...Definately picked up and Sounded AWESOME in 2003...as for 2009...was he losing his voice?0 -
The sound quality of the boots since 2008 have been awful. I have about (15) boots from then until now and I still prefer listening to the 2000 & 2003 boots...killer stuff on those. I hope they are not paying anyone for mixing these crappy new ones. I love PJ but the live quality of the boots now a days are just bad.0

That's what the studio albums are for. Imagine how boring PJ shows would be if the crowd didn't make a noise.Member 164xxx
