Will your hotel have free wifi? Find free wifi hotspots?
Skype calls over free wifi and texts over free wifi through an app such as whatsapp? Also think the app viber allows calls and texts over wifi.Still can't believe I met Mike Mccready at the Guggenheim and got a pic with him!!!!!

Or you could look into SIM cards in one of the countries you'll be in, and check rates for using it in the other countries you will be going to. You will need an unlocked cell phone though, which shouldn't be hard to get.0 -

you could try to get a prepaid sim card in just one of the countries. if you're mostly receiving calls, roaming charges shouldn't be too bad as it's all EU countries and therefore limits apply.0 -
