There's no 'of'. I just listened to San Diego 09, and it's "Picture an empty cup in the middle of the sea"

on the studio version it's, "picture a cup floating in the middle of the sea"

Just listened to the live version from Dallas in 2003, "picture an empty cup in the middle of the sea." Live the lyric is probably altered here and there.

Well the lyrics before hand go "all the advantage this life's got on me"
so it would make sense if it is "picture a cup in the middle of the sea" since that cup would be getting its ass kicked and drowning. Makes sense.

I'm not hearing the 'floating' in the studio version.. just "picture a cup in the middle of the sea"

I just checked half a dozen live versions and they all are "picture a empty cup in the middle of the sea"

Also, the fist couple of lines are sung differently live.. the studio version is "My lips are shaking, my nails are bit off. Been a month since I heard myself talk."

Live its sung "It's been a month and a day since I heard myself talk."

  • "picture a cup in the middle of the sea" studio version...heavily mumbled.

"picture an empty cup in the middle of the sea" most live versions...less mumbled ;)

    both would be cool lyrics

    Yes!

I Got Id, not I Got ID or I Got I.D.

    Drives me bananas.

As others have already said, the studio version is: "picture a cup in the middle of the sea", the live version is usually "picture an empty cup in the middle of the sea".

Oh, I always heard it as "an empty coffin in the middle of the sea". Makes more sense than cup, think I'll keep coffin. :P

I'm pretty sure it is "My poker pu pu pu poker face!"

I'd go with it as a tattoo (immediately)!

    I'm 1000% sure.

ok, but what about "and I stare/send you back, oh in a little while I'll see hell/blue eyed scene yeah"

Never did get that line straightened out.

The lyrics on the Pearl Jam web site say picture an empty cup in the middle of the sea. But it's interesting that the contest you had to draw a picture to represent the lyrics to a song about 2 years ago, showed a coffin floating in the middle of the sea and I'm pretty sure that won second place

"I stare you back, what a blue-eyed scene" - after listening to countless versions, I'm positive that's the line.

But what the heck is a blue-eyed scene? That can't be it. I kinda like the "what little I've seen" interpretation, which I'd never seen before tonight.
