Obama seems poised to become the first president to run a reelection campaign based on raising taxes.

"A quarter of all millionaires now pay lower tax rates than millions of middle-class households. Some billionaires have a tax rate as low as 1%,"

If this report is even close to being true, why is Obama focusing so hard on raising the tax rate when the same loopholes will still be available?

It's not the tax rate, it's the tax code that needs to be addressed if this story is true. Otherwise a 3% tax increase will amount to nothing and will be negated by existing loopholes ... that is unless this is propaganda meant to fuel class warfare and make people angry at the Monopoly Man instead of the fools in Congress.

I think the rich ARE paying a ton in right now and if they raise taxes the government will get a lot more money. Otherwise, they would not be interested in raising taxes.

Here in Ontario groceries are exempt from the tax.

Why haven't they raised alcohol taxes?Tobacco taxes?
    Gas Taxes?

Here we pay considerably more? I don't know about tobacco...but here the high price of alcohol hasn't stopped people from drinking and the high price of gas hasn't stopped people from driving!!!

Now I hate taxes as much as anybody...but do realize we all must pay some tax!!!! its just what the g'ment does with the taxes that I don't like.

Actually it wasn't widely publicized but in Ontario when the HST came in at actually technically lowered the alcohol tax (since instead of paying PST for booze you were paying a higher specific alcohol tax, plus GST). But the LCBO in ontario just raised prices across the board so no one ever saw those savings.

    reaganomics
actually then, i was a middle-class republican (yeah, i know) and at least where we were, it worked

everything trickles parallel or defies gravity and trickles the fuck up

they have billions. yeah sure they're gonna buy a lexus or a porsche, but how many jobs does that create?> that's the principle of trickle down tho. its not sustainable......

Hate to break 101 to ya, but corporations are owned by people. They pay taxes on cap gains and dividends. Give me an example of one of these "corporations" that pay no taxes and I probably either paid taxes owning them or know someone who does/did.

It's like jr. Finance around here. That's why I stick around, so someone can maybe learn something.

You made my point. Thank you. I bought GE a couple years ago and have lost money as a shareholder. Paid a bit over 18/share.
I do however pay taxes on my GE stock. It has something called a dividend. That is what PEOPLE pay on the company they OWN

This goes to my 101 comment about "not getting it"

This is why I am a minority on this forum, not many seem to get it. Just soundbites and amateur google searches.

you don't have a problem with one of the wealthiest companies in the world paying no taxes?

we are after the heads by the way, the rest are not our concern.

and its absoulutely criminal this institution pays no taxes. that's what we are fighting against.

don't you think this very wealthy company should pay taxes? instead of pawning it off on their shareholders?

corporations are tyrannical organisations....why should the little man pay the big man's tax?

Well in that case, I am the "little man" and I pay the "big mans" taxes with the expected return of earning more on my investment than the perceived/calculated risk associated with that investment. The current President is trying to redistribute wealth and that makes for more uncertainty in my expected return. Uncertanty kills investment.

    Uncertanty KILLS investment.

democratized means just that. the corporation will no longer be a fascist institution. it will be run by the people of this country.
