I've seen him twice... Once an acoustic (but not unplugged) show in a ~450 seat theatre in Toronto (he was miserable, and played a ~1/1.5 hour show that was short but spectacular), and once at Massey Hall, where he played with the Cardinals and put on an equally spectacular show but much more upbeat. He's an amazing musician, and am jealous of you west coast folks who get to see him!

  • Just getting back into Mr. Adams' work. It's the time of the season. Colors changing in the autumn of the year and shit. I love it. Can't wait for Ashes and Fire.
"FF, I've heard the droning about the Sawx being the baby dolls. Yeah, I get it, you guys invented baseball and suffered forever. I get it." -JearlPam0925
  • Been a fan of his ever since I bought "Gold" on the recommendation of my cousin (whose musical tastes I very much respect). I then backtracked and bought "Heartbreaker" and all the Whiskeytown stuff, and I've been a hard-core fan ever since. He was so incredibly prolific for so many years, culminating in 2005 with the release of THREE new studio albums (I'm not aware of anyone who has topped this number!)
After what seemed to be an extended period of musical soul-searching, from the heavily-produced ROCK N ROLL to the downtrodden Smiths-inspired "Love Is Hell" to the brilliant Grateful-Dead homage that was "Cold Roses" and the sparse, minimalist 29, he finally seemed to settle into a consistent groove with "Easy Tiger" and "Cardinology." Then...nothing. No new music (outside a sci-fi metal experiment offered exclusively on his website). Even III/IV consisted of no more than outtakes from Cardinology.
It's quite possible that he burned out during those years of productivity. I've heard rumblings of serious substance abuse issues (which he has apparently gotten over), and I know he got married recently. Perhaps he just needed to slow down and enjoy life a little bit. I hope he had a nice rest. It's good to see him back making new music...I hope he paces himself so the new tunes can continue. Really, Ryan...I can live with only one album a year...I guess!
And if you ever need another break, I'd dig an official release of "48 Hours"...or "Suicide Handbook"...or any of that great stuff you recorded with the Pinkhearts ("Candy Doll" deserves to be unleashed on the public!)

Listening to this today made me get on a real Cold Roses kick. I listened to the album while driving home, while at the grocery store, while doing the dishes after dinner. That album is greatness from him & The Cardinals, start to finish.

I always get giddy when he releases a new album. :D
These cuts are leaving creases. Trace the scars to fit the pieces, to tell the story, you don't need to say a word.

Has anyone ever heard his Pinkhearts collection of songs? I had no idea it existed until exploring some Ryan Adams boards and am now listening to Pinkhearts Vol.2 on Grooveshark.com

The song "Blue and Shy" is great, and is the closest thing Ryan has done to a Replacements song. Good stuff! 8-)
