The book and Dave
Got the book today, love it, but frustrated that again they quickly glossed over Dave Abbruzzese. They have no commentary from Dave but lots from Jack. Also no comments about Dave from Eddie, whom had the issue with Dave and pushed for his firing. However Mike chimed in with some real compliments about Dave's playing saying that he was an integral part of their success in the early years. Stone again calls Dave a "gentleman", and chimed in with a real poignant comment about Dave along the lines that Dave had really missed an opportunity to avoid being fired. Stone finished saying he wish it didn't work out that way and that Dave had stayed with the band. Stone points to Vs. as his favorite album, and Mike points out Dave's amazing work on that album. Stone basically said all anyone has to do is listen to Dave's playing with Pearl Jam to hear he was an excellent drummer. Jeff took the high road too with compliments to Dave's playing.
Brendan O'Brien had comments too about Dave, especially how uncomfortable the Vitalogy sessions were with the band. However regarding the Vs. sessions he was more nostalgic, in the book he contradicts comments he made on the "All encompassing trip" Sirius show. When Brendan was on the Sirius show last Winter a caller asked Brendan specifically about the end of "Rearviewmirror" on Vs, the lore has long been that he was driving Dave crazy on that recording making Dave play it over and over until Brendan liked the take. And that at the end of the song when he finally got it to Brendan's liking Dave throws his sticks at the recording studio's glass in front of Brendan in frustration. Then Dave proceeded to punch a hole in his drum and throw it off a nearby cliff. Brendan on the Sirius show last year denied that happened, yet in the book Brendan recounts that event exactly as the caller stated. Dave threw his sticks at the glass window, which is heard at the end of the song, then proceeds to punch a hole in his drums and throws them off a nearby hill.
I know this is "Pearl Jam's" book, and Pearl Jam has not included Dave Abbruzzese for 17 years, but if they're interviewing Jack Irons and including his memories why couldn't the band let the authors go talk to Dave and let him add his perspective. After all Dave was there during Pearl jam's most explosive years.
I'm looking forward to the movie, but from all accounts I've read they're not going to get much deeper than the book on the subject.

This is in response to you asking about Jack's memories: without Jack, no Eddie.

I seriously doubt that, I guess you've missed the Youtube videos Dave has been putting out that have coincided with the re-release of "Ten" and the "Vs - Vitalogy" re-release. Watch the "Hard to Imagine" video Dave made and tell me he doesn't want to be included.
Unfortunately for Dave and the current members of Pearl Jam that well probably dried up about 8 years ago with the growth of the Ipod and the internet etc.. The music industry, especially rock music, is dead. There are no more rock stations in New York, Philadelphia just lost Rock perennial WYSP. The members of Pearl Jam make their livings now touring and selling merchandise through the Ten club. Eddie was quite candid about this subject a few months ago in an interview, he was quite forthcoming citing their need for sponsors etc.. like Verizon during the '08 tour, Target to distribute their new records etc.. to off set their costs.
Royalties are dead.
Would he not get a cut of all the Ten, Vs and Vitalogy re-issue sales? Or the bootlegs that have songs credited to him on them? I don't know, I don't even know if he still owns his piece of the publishing pie anymore. It might not be the lottery, but if he didn't sell his stake then I'm sure he's getting paid to some extent.
I love Stone's quote, something about "Dave just had to remove himself from that position of being fired and he didn't."
I too would have liked to hear more about the firing... but it's just one of those things they don't wanna mention....

So, I'd have to assume they gave the same direction to the book writers, since it is as close to an autobiography with a ghost writer as you can get.
The book has not told me anything I did not know. Alot of the photos I have seen elsewhere too. Looking more and more like a marketing cash grab by the band and CC.
Another good book out now,
"Everybody Loves Loves Our Town" the history of grunge.
Some good quotes about the "exit Dave" topic.
+1 on this. That vid is almost heart breaking. I can't imagine something being so bad that you can't bury the hatchet after 17 years. I mean seriously. We all go through times where someone has pissed us off. My wife and I got screwed over by someone 6 years ago to the tune of $300K+ and it nearly bankrupted us. The next 3 years were probably the most emotionally draining time in my life. I carried a lot of hatred for that person, but one day I realized it was only hurting me and keeping me full of anger and bitterness. I just told myself I wasn't going to be like that any longer. So I gradually got on talking terms again with that person. I had never felt such a weight lift off my shoulders, it was unimaginable. Within a year my family and their family actually started to become very close, and now I'd consider their family close friends of ours. Yeah it sucks to feel slighted, pissed off and screwed over, but it sucks even worse feeling hatred for them.
Don't misread what I'm saying here, because I don't know what the deal is/was between Ed and Dave, so I'm not saying what they should or should not do. I'm just saying, having gone through my own experiences, short of someone trying to mess around with my wife or hurting my kids, I can't imagine something being that bad.
any links? how do i know it's dave's videos on you tube?

More to Come....
I'm aware that he wasn't the drummer on the Ten album, but he is the drummer on the "Drop In The Park" and "MTV Unplugged" materials that come with various versions of the re-issues.
