my sister and I walked down to this little mom and pap breakfast joint earlier. there weren't many people inside. maybe 8 people. So i see a couple guys walk in out of the corner of my eye. I nonchalantly glanced over. Then i did a double take. it was stone.

He was with another guy i recognized. One of the crew guys. later i found out it was smitty. they were just a few tables away and figured i would just say "hey stone". I thought about it more and thought i had chance to chat with him, but i didn't want to make a scene inside. plus, i could tell nobody else recognized him. So Lisa and I just went about our usual business. Stone and smitty finisded their meals the same time we did. We walked out a few minutes before them so we waited outside.. just standing around, not making it obvious.

Stone walks out. I let him walk about 10 feet before i approached him

    me: hey stone?

(stone turns around, nods, and walks towards me

me: hey, i just wanted to say hi. my name is eugene and this is my sister, lisa. we just flew in for the show tomorrow

    (we shake hands)

stone: oh, awesome. where'd ya come from?
    me: florida
stone: hah, we were actually just talking about florida.
    me: oh yeah?
stone: yeah, just wondering when we're gonna get down there
me: haha..yeah, a lot of people have been wondering about that
stone: yeah (rubs chin)..ya know all of the southern shows don't sell out and the south is just a huge detour. (does some kind of detour motion with his hands) but, we are gonna work something out and get down there
    me: so ya guys excited?
stone: yeah man, petty. it's been awesome
    stone: are you guys excited?
me: oh yeah.......hey, mind if we get a quick picture
stone: yeah, that's cool. let smitty take it

    (takes picture)

me: well, it was nice to meet ya. thanks
stone: you too, enjoy the show
    me: thanks you too

then they walked into a radio station

the picture was taken with my sister's camera and she doesn't have the cord, so i took a picture of the picture with my camera

I wonder what he meant by the "huge detour" part? Maybe he means it takes longer to travel between the major southern cities? It's inconvenient?

Maybe they're just playing "hard-to-get" to create some more anticipation?

Well that's kind of a confirmation of some discussion on here about how the southern shows sell. But nice to read that they might try to get down there. Thanks for posting the story. Maybe they could do like one in Orlando, one in Houston, one in Atlanta, somewhere in North Carolina....those should sell pretty well, no?

yeah, and Dallas also seems to sell pretty well. I think the San Antonio show sold out in '03, but it might just be because that's the only show they've ever played there.

anywhere among those three cities (or Austin) would sell out, because it would draw fans from all of them.

they could always play smaller venues which would then be easier to sell out (i.e. the Ryman in Nashville) and also give fans some great, intimate shows

I thought that too, but it is possible they would lose money that way (it costs more to pay the crew and truck in all their shit than a 7,000-seat show in Birmingham, Alabama or something would produce, possibly).

but, yeah, it would be cool if they would do it.

We'd all go crazy if they played theatres and club shows in the South, but I don't think that would be fair either.

In my mind, there has to be a medium-range capacity on the venues for the tour. Not 2000, but not 20000 either. I suggest university basketball coliseums. That would fit between 5000 and 12000, pretty much be sell-outs, yet leave enough tickets for all the touring fans and southern supporters.

That way, they could hit Athens, Gainesville, Chapel Hill, Columbia (MO or SC), Austin, Charlottesville, Birmingham, Nashville, Tampa, Baton Rouge/New Orleans, and a few more places. On top of those, they could add big arena shows in large metro areas like Miami, Dallas, St. Louis, Phoenix, and Houston.

Wasn't too smart on their part when they played rupp arena in lexington last tour. That place holds over 24,000 for basketball!!

And they wonder why they didn't sell out.

although I'd go to any show they played so close to me and don't want to be too greedy ... man, I hope they don't play the Erwin Center in Austin. God, that place sucks for concerts. It's like a frekin' cavern.
