How is it possible...

that in the year 2011, a band with it's own radio station couldn't stream their 20th anniversary celebration for their fans who couldn't be there? I'm staring at my laptop Saturday night, listening to poor sound and a practically black screen from a cell phone of a person who was (admirably) trying to share the experience. I love everything about this band, but this was a major blunder. Between this and the constant ticket disasters, the band needs to hire someone who can handle the technology aspect of today's music world.

Would have killed to see both those setlists, btw....

  • Well, I spent both nights doing a Star Wars marathon...
... hopefully there will be a DVD of these shows :)

I would guess this is less of a lack of technological understanding/prowess and more of a decision to release a DVD/compilation of the event for sale.
  • I really don't think a webcast would effect the sale of a DVD in any way, shape, or form.

Because they are old school and believe that you actually need to go to the concert to hear it.
  • Yeah...that certainly explains why they sell bootlegs for every show!!! Give me a break dude.

Except of course for the following:

    2000 tour
    2003 tour
    2005 tour
    2008 tour
    2009 tour
    2010 tour

The thought of them airing the show on their station would hurt a possible cd/DVD release is ridiculous in my mind. We'd still buy them.

The PJ 20 coverage on Sirius was a letdown in my opinion.

But, as they say. I should start a band and get my own station

    Ok if not that then:
So that the 10C folks who paid $3000 would get the exclusive "first listen."

Not to mention Self-Pollution Radio, the '94 Atlanta show, the '96 Berlin show ... all of which were broadcast live on something called a "radio."

I guess they just didn't want to. I know I wanted to and still hold out hope that someday we do stream or broadcast a live show. Obviously not my call.

So the "upper class" of the Ten Club gets all the rights and privileges? Sounds like something the band would rail against, not participate in.....

    I'm confused. Who paid $3000?

  • I agree with this - the idea that something couldn't have been done for fans who couldn't get there is quite sad. I'm not angry about it - I wasn't expecting much but we all did have hope for something. Or at least some kind of communication as to whether or not something would happen.

Don't get me wrong - I loved watching Gary's stream - perhaps it was even more special because it was Gary who was streaming it, and even though it wasn't HD quality, it was still amazing to hear and sounded really good. Watching the stream with, at one point on Sunday night, over 1000 viewers - everyone talking to each other on the chat, Gary's singing, you could feel the energy and it was just great to be involved with it all.

But the duty of streaming the event shouldn't have been placed on a fan who was there. I admire and respect Gary so much for his efforts - heck, everyone does. It was so kind and generous of him to go to all that trouble to spread the music, share the experience with everyone.

But it should have been done by 10c or the band or whoever - I'm not pointing fingers. This isn't an aggressive post in any way and I enjoyed what I had - so much, so so so so grateful and happy for it. I'm not even going to go into how much the band does either - everyone here knows that too. 10C does a lot too and I am just an outsider, a fan. I'm not one to make any demands or be critical of things I don't know about and I definitely have little to no idea as to how it all works - being in 10c,the band, the management, business, technological aspects.

But we are living in a world where using the internet, using digital methods is becoming more and more practical, necessary and a part of life - we can communicate, spread information, stream live events - really easily. And I know the band may be "analog" or "old school" (I'm not degrading those terms by putting them in speech marks, I'm not a hater) but there has to be some kind of exception. Especially when it comes to your fans.

Today there are lots of bands out there that use the internet, the "digital age" to their advantage and to the benefit of their fans - off the top of my head, 30 Seconds to Mars are an example. They use media to communicate with their fans as well as share their music, artistic work etc. It's less alienating IMO. Loads of places stream events too and there's loads of ways to do it - like youtube. Again I don't know much about these kinds of things but if Gary could stream for 3 hours using just his mobile phone with 1000 viewers, it can't have been much harder for something to have been done withthe actual band/venue/management etc.

If something can help you to spread your music, allow your fans to enjoy and be able to share in a momentous occasion such as PJ20, then why not go for it?

I hope I didn't offend anyone and I'm not in any way bashing PJ20 or the band or 10c - I'm just saying how I feel about the whole deal. It was still amazing and maybe all the more special that a fan was doing this for other fans?

folks that bought travel packages form the 10c
but anyway, like the Rob said
    they just didnt want to
and I am fine with that
  • Completely agree with Pilate on all fronts. Not angry, just surprised and a tad disappointed. Seems like an opportunity missed IMO.

  • we're talking about a band who took over a decade to realize they could deliver their annual single digitally.

I don't find it all surprising. they just don't generally do stuff like that.
