Income + Taxes = VOTE

I think that those who don't pay an income tax should be disqualified from voting, or, alternatively, those on public assistance should be DQed from voting.
If you don't agree, Why?
Please take into account the point of a system in which people not paying taxes and getting free money, simply vote to keep the system in place and growing. Leaving a party an easy platform of wanting the growth of "entitlements"...

Interesting concept. I think I may agree.

    isn't it already that way?

big business fudns big bucks to their canidates virtually ensuring the little guy has no chance

anyways...how about this....the powers that be could than increase the level of income needed before paying taxes, resulting in only the top 1% of people getting a vote.

could you also give us your definition of "paying taxes". even the poorest of the poor pay taxes when they buy a cup of coffee. it's called sales tax.

    have fun with this thread.

Might be the dumbest thread I've seen on AMT, and that's saying something.

Every citizen in a democracy has the right to vote. Period. End of discussion.

    But, I'll use your argument.

Anyone who recieves any sort of funding from the government (farm subsidies, defense contractors, government employees, the military, etc...) should not have the right to vote. Why? They have the power to vote just to keep the gravy train flowing.

    Thoughts?

some people are only on public assistance for a short time.. lets say someone is on it for 6 months. Then because they couldnt vote in an election, they have to live under the lead of a president for the following 3.5 years while they are not receiving aid?

better idea... institute a citizenship test. At least we'd get rid of most of the Tea Party.

It would be against the constitution to use such hooey and applesauce as requirements.

Plus, there is a reason the lottery was instituted ... to tax the poor.

you get laid off from your job after 25 years and you don't get to vote because you are collecting unemployment to feed your family? makes perfect sense to me.

"When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic."

normally attributed to Ben Franklin, this quote doesn't just refer to those who collect welfare. It refers to anyone who may benefit from the government spending money in the direction they want it.
I understand the point you are trying to make...But you cannot have it both ways.

What if a very wealthy person derives all of his income via tax-exempt investments, such as muni bonds?

Would you preclude them from voting?
