Might be the dumbest thread I've seen on AMT, and that's saying something.

Every citizen in a democracy has the right to vote. Period. End of discussion.

Hey... let's each pick and choose which parts of the Constitution we want to randomly throw out...
The term in the constitution was "gerneral welfare" which was applied to the individual states in which the Fed would help out the state if need be.
Also the term welfare has taken on a different meaning today.
Also, what is our debt again?

Anyone who recieves any sort of funding from the government (farm subsidies, defense contractors, government employees, the military, etc...) should not have the right to vote. Why? They have the power to vote just to keep the gravy train flowing.

    Thoughts?
Those what you just named All pay taxes/help economy/etc... They provide goods/services...

Are you talking just about federal elections? Because poor people who spend any money at all in most states and local municipalities pay some sort of sales tax. Not all of course. But if someone is poor they pay a federal gas tax when they fill up the tank, smoke a cigarette, all sorts of ways. I think you are making a bold statement that hasn't been thought out. Those that literally pay nothing into the system ever at all aren't likely to vote anyway.

last i checked it was illegal to disenfranchise american citizens....
Yeah your right... wait... what opportunities are not made available to everyone?

If you really think everyone has the exact same opportunities, then this thread might as well end right here.

why not extend tax liabilty rather than take away the right to vote? there are people who work that get everything back

So do those on assistance. They buy products (sales tax) gas (gas tax) etc. They buy more of this stuff than they would without. Just as corporations pump more into the economy if they get certain tax breaks.

But, that wasn't in your argument. Your argument was because those could just vote to keep the system in place. So, what is it Blockhead?

What is not accessible/available to everyone?

Off the top of my head, those living in poorer areas don't get as good of an education if their school district does not perform as well/gets less funding (vs Canada where every district gets the same funding based on number of students. Essentially this means I get the same education in the suburbs that the kids got on the ghetto).

No, "general welfare" is not what anyone is talking about when they brought up the Constitution in this thread...

Amendment 24 - Poll Tax Barred. Ratified 1/23/1964.

    1. The right of citizens of the United States to vote in any primary or other election for President or Vice President, for electors for President or Vice President, or for Senator or Representative in Congress, shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any State by reason of failure to pay any poll tax or other tax.

And our Debt.. If we cut EVERYTHING other than Social Security, Medicare, and Defense, we still wouldn't balance the budget. So if people are actually serious about cutting the debt, look at those programs.

the thing that people who want to cut social security forget that social security is SELF REPLENISHING. people on SS die every day and people are added to the rolls everyday and the population continues to pay into it every day. it is a BENEFIT program.. if social security was left alone and not taken out of that account to pay for things like wars there would be no issue with social security ever running out.

oh ok. Well that ammendment was primarly to stop segregation and allow blacks to be able to vote. Although important in history, this is not my point.
this thread is not meant to segregate groups but for people to understand that political platforms will always lean on those who are dependant on them to win votes. This country is now filled with entitlement programs that has now turned into privliages that people pay for.

It is not accessible for anyone who has a job where it is not offered and who doesn't have an extra $250/month to be able to afford it.

Please take into account the point of a system in which people not paying taxes and getting free money, simply vote to keep the system in place and growing. Leaving a party an easy platform of wanting the growth of "entitlements"...

I agree with you there... both parties play the game... However, more policies are implemented for the benefit of big donors, then for people on welfare.

Thats the whole point of SS... Its just another fund for the gov.
Why would anyone think that the gov. taking your money, only to give it back to you when you retire is a good program.

because you are not paying the government. you are paying the government to distribute those funds to the elderly and infirmed that would surely die without that money. the government is not profitting from it. it is an investment that you will get back at age 65 or if you become disabled or if your spouse dies, or whatever. if the government left it is a lock box like gore so famously wanted to do, it would be solvent for a hundred years. but since we are stealing from it to pay for wars and make sure a budget might balance on paper it is in some trouble. if we left it alone and the rich and corporations paid their share we would be fine.

but yeah, lets not let those people who receive it vote...
