Why not a national sales tax? everyone who consumes would be paying it. seems like 5% national sales tax could go along way to solving your debt woes.

Would this be in lieu of federal income tax? If so, I would be interested. Might help increase spending on goods.

Wouldn't this just be a tax that unfairly targets the poor? 5% to someone who only has one dollar is less of a bite than to someone who has a million.

Would certain basic goods (milk, bread, eggs, diapers) be exempt? Because those items cost the same whether I'm destitute or a millionaire.

They buy less stuff anyhow and cheaper stuff. But, I'm not sure our economy needs to discourage spending any more.

the rich do not spend their money. the middle class spends what they have and that stimulates the economy. people are not stimulating the economy because they can't afford to because everything is more expensive and wages, for those that are fortunate to have a job, are stagnated.

those that have the most should help save the economy by paying a little more into it.

only a damn fool would believe that cutting spending only will cut down the deficit.

why do we have to raise tax's at all why couldn't we make cuts at the levels where the money is mis-spent ?
we didn't get into this mess overnight so why do these people think they can fix it over night with higher tax's ?

If they cut the military budget in half, we would still be spending 5x more than China (the next biggest military spender) and we'd pay of this shit in a decade..

The rich like to horde money too, so I say tax the shit out of them. Sure they worked hard to earn it, but they also won more than their fair share by smarting out the capitalistic system. They can afford it and will still be more than well off. It's not fair when they hire people overseas to do work cheap while the people around them suffer. We've worked hard for this great country, so why exploit it for cheap labor overseas?

Yes, there are lazy people out there, but anyone who does any job to satisfactory, 40 hrs a week, should earn the right to live on their own. Minimum wage doesn't afford that. In my opinion, capitalism needs to be regulated. The people on top are too competative, which is good, but bad for society as a whole..

I really don't know shit about the economy, but this is my thought. When I was a kid I thought we'd all be drinking martini's in recliners by now, letting robots do all our work. I guess it's all about who takes credit for creating the robots. Just sucks when a few percent get there first and control the rest of us. :?

To reduce the debt, I would end the "wars" in Afghanistan and Iraq and bring the soldiers back to the USA.

We have the HST here in Ontario on top of federal/provincial tax...all taxes are hated!!! But in order for a country to function we must pay some taxes.

Here in Canada lower income people get rebate cheques throughout the year. The tax makes it hard for the rich to avoid paying, they buy houses, cars, boats, furniture travel etc...all of which is taxed.

Unpopular yes!!! but we got used to it...and I think if Harper didn't reduce it by 2% and reduced income tax instead we would not be running near as much of a deficit...or at least thats what I've read...even the McGuinty HST we've gotten used to...he did reduce income tax...so it's suppose to be revenue neutral.

And I think you are right it is probably a good idea...

Here in Ontario groceries are exempt from the tax.

Why haven't they raised alcohol taxes?
    Tobacco taxes?
    Gas Taxes?

Here we pay considerably more? I don't know about tobacco...but here the high price of alcohol hasn't stopped people from drinking and the high price of gas hasn't stopped people from driving!!!

Now I hate taxes as much as anybody...but do realize we all must pay some tax!!!! its just what the g'ment does with the taxes that I don't like.
