the rich do not spend their money. the middle class spends what they have and that stimulates the economy. people are not stimulating the economy because they can't afford to because everything is more expensive and wages, for those that are fortunate to have a job, are stagnated.
those that have the most should help save the economy by paying a little more into it.

Yes, there are lazy people out there, but anyone who does any job to satisfactory, 40 hrs a week, should earn the right to live on their own. Minimum wage doesn't afford that. In my opinion, capitalism needs to be regulated. The people on top are too competative, which is good, but bad for society as a whole..
I really don't know shit about the economy, but this is my thought. When I was a kid I thought we'd all be drinking martini's in recliners by now, letting robots do all our work. Would certain basic goods (milk, bread, eggs, diapers) be exempt? Because those items cost the same whether I'm destitute or a millionaire.
Here in Canada lower income people get rebate cheques throughout the year. The tax makes it hard for the rich to avoid paying, they buy houses, cars, boats, furniture travel etc...all of which is taxed.

we have that in Canada called the GST. it was not very popular but i always thought it was a good idea.
Unpopular yes!!! but we got used to it...and I think if Harper didn't reduce it by 2% and reduced income tax instead we would not be running near as much of a deficit...or at least thats what I've read...even the McGuinty HST we've gotten used to...he did reduce income tax...so it's suppose to be revenue neutral.

If this report is even close to being true, why is Obama focusing so hard on raising the tax rate when the same loopholes will still be available?
It's not the tax rate, it's the tax code that needs to be addressed if this story is true. Otherwise a 3% tax increase will amount to nothing and will be negated by existing loopholes ... that is unless this is propaganda meant to fuel class warfare and make people angry at the Monopoly Man instead of the fools in Congress.
I think the rich ARE paying a ton in right now and if they raise taxes the government will get a lot more money. Otherwise, they would not be interested in raising taxes.

Actually it wasn't widely publicized but in Ontario when the HST came in at actually technically lowered the alcohol tax (since instead of paying PST for booze you were paying a higher specific alcohol tax, plus GST). But the LCBO in ontario just raised prices across the board so no one ever saw those savings.

You made my point. Thank you. I bought GE a couple years ago and have lost money as a shareholder. Paid a bit over 18/share.
I do however pay taxes on my GE stock. It has something called a dividend. That is what PEOPLE pay on the company they OWN
