Is it just me or does the new LP's just sound bad. They are just to compressed for my taste. I have a really good system and listen many different styles of sound and these disc are just not up to par. They should of just sent to MoFi to have there engineers do them up.

    Backspacer?

yeah - much loudness! a couple other new albums aso too much loudness: Telephantasm and Death Magnetic, sound starts to garble and distort at certain points.

But Backspacer is not too bad, though it seems everything is cranked up ( i have to put my bass on "0" in the car!)

I'm talking about the re-issue LP's. If they went through the trouble of remastering you would think the would make a quality product. I am just very disappointed in them. Sonic Youth and the Pixies re-issues are 20x better and are worth every penny.

Death Magnetic is absolutely brutal. I haven't heard the vinyl but on CD, it's so distorted that it's almost unlistenable. It could literally be the worst-sounding major release I've ever heard.

PJ reissues sound fine to me but my system is nothing special.

My system consist of a Creek Evolution int-amp with phono board, Rega turntable and EPOS speakers. So I know its not my system. I also have a few reference Lp's so I know its not my ears fooling with me.

    Sonic Youth "Daydream Nation"
    Miles Davis "Bitches Brew"

  • The OP is correct, the re-issues of Vs and Vitalogy sound awful compared to the originals

reissues are not good, even the re issue of Into the wild doesnt sound the same as the first pressing. and yes i do have both of those

  • I thought Backspacer was poorly done, although some people seem to think its ok. It's certainly not a good vinyl compared to others. Certain songs just sound off. I remember a thread that talked about the process of putting music to vinyl and if you just take the take the master recordings done for CD or Digital release and press it to vinyl you end up with an inferior product which I guess is what was done for Backspacer. IDK, not into or don't understand the technology aspects, but my ears tell me it ain't so hot.

Have heard the re-issues cause I have the originals :D

Now with all this said. It seems to me is this was a just to make a buck deal. I hate to say but I am very very sad that PJ has sold out to even us.

I do have to say though that the E.V. Lp isn't that bad. It actually sounds good.

My opinion is that 95% of the population today has crap stuff at home.
So producers, mixers and engineers crank it all up so they try to emulate the sound they have at studio.

The Yard stick here is crap stereos... and not Hi-Fi people. Sadly.

None of my friends have a decent sound equipament. None.
None of my friends listen to music anymore. None.

Music has become a soundtrack of life for 99% of the world population. They are all doing something else while listening to music. That's why they use things like Mp3 players and iPODs. For you car is fine. But at home... not me.

So the records are produced for people with bad gear. We, Hi-Fi heads pay the price.
Just a stupid guy opinion.

You would think that most off the people that listen to LP's have at least a some what decent system. I do agree with you for sure.

  • Yeah, all these re-releases or reissues these days just seem to compress the hell out of the sound. I wish they would let me turn up the volume, not preturn it up when mixing and mastering. It leaves everything with a wimpy loud sound; no impact whatsoever.

Compressing every instrument into the red to give a booming full sound, is what made O'brien's production famous.

Not all his work is like that. The first Stone Temple Pilots album was done by him and is really well done in my opinion.
