Not taking away anything from what they do. They do amazingly well for an oder type band and aren't becoming a joke like aerosmith or other older bands. I'm glad they don't play the game like U2 or metallica or kiss. Pj is a music band and thank god they are. The only stadium I could ever see them playing is qwest field in seattle and even then they would need a band like soundgarden or the who to open up for them for it to sell out.

Today I was thinking about the different kind of venues that I've seen bands in. I've been everywhere from small clubs to open fields of hundreds of thousands of people. When I think of where I've seen Pearl Jam, it's ALWAYS been in an arena or amphitheater. In my opinion, the semi-outdoor amphitheaters (the Meadows, Great Woods, Susquehanna, PNC) as well as the fully outdoor ampitheatres (Red Rocks, the Gorge) are amongst the best places to see a band. Being outdoors and with a greater number of fans creates, at least for me, a better show.

In my opinion, there's no better place to experience this than in a stadium. If you've ever been in the front few rows at a stadium, you know the exhilaration of turning around and just seeing a sea of people. I think that Pearl Jam would be able to sell out most of the major football or baseball stadiums around the US. I understand that people don't appreciate the lack on intimacy, but I think the vibe of the crowd outweighs this.

So, discuss it - how do you all feel about Pearl Jam playing stadiums?

Look, obviously everyone here loves Pearl Jam. But if you think PJ can sell out most NFL and baseball stadiums, you are absolutely insane.

NFL stadiums average around 70,000. Really? Sell out? They wouldnt even fill half the stadium, and it'd be an embarassing scene.

I saw them at Aloha Stadium in Hawaii when they opened for U2 and didnt care for it at all. It would work for a band like U2 because they have like 110 semi trucks full of light shows, etc. wouldn't work for Pearl Jam because they are not about all that fluff.

Meh. I saw the Stones at Soldier Field a few years back. It was the first time I'd ever seen them and I was stoked about it, but the sound was pretty atrocious. Also, as a Packer fan, being in Soldier Field gives me the willies  I saw dmb at Wrigley last year, which I was also really excited about.. music in the friendly confines, should be pretty amazing, right? Nope. The sound was way worse than I thought it could have been and I wasn't able to score GA tickets, so the stage was really far away. Of course if PJ played in a stadium I'd go, but I probably wouldn't be as excited about that as say Alpine or United Center.

There are only a few areas of this country that they would sell out stadiums.

I've only seen stadium shows at Soldier Field (old and new), and although I had a great time at all, the sound wasn't great... I certainly prefer amphitheatres!

I also agree PJ would have a hard time selling out stadiums, with the possible exceptions of Chicago, Seattle, Philly, NYC and Boston...

Stadium shows usually don't sell-out without a BIG festival lineup. PJ probably won't sell-out A.V. which is 20+ thousand less than a stadium show. Unless your U2, or a Zepplin or Pink Floyd reunion. Or maybe if Jerry returns from the DEAD 8-) .
So, What you Giving ?........ (Thanks Speedy, Alesek, & Arq+friends)

    A Pink Floyd Re-Union.
umm dmb sold out giant stadium, bruce has sold out stadiums, greenday even sold out giant stadium. Pearl jam can't even sell out arenas and people want a stadium tour, lol. Pink floyd will never runite ever again. Mason and glimour still hate waters.

Hmm, I think PJ do pretty well in terms of ticket sales, okay so they may not sell out every show but not many do. They don't play the game like those you listed above, but they're still a stong touring act that's for sure. Oh and you forgot U2.
I don't know how the tour has been going to this point for U2, but there are plenty of seats available for tonight's Soldier FIeld show.

they could probably sell out Citizens Bank Park (for a concert probably around 40,000 capacity) in Philly but no chance they'd sell out Lincoln Financial Field (eagles stadium with like 70,000+ capacity).

other than lousy sound stadium shows would also produce about 10,000 fans there for the sheer idea of the event and partying - no thanks. rather have 15-20,000 true PJ fans in an indoor venue or even god-forsaken Camden than a stadium show.

I guess it depends a lot on the city/culture in question.

In the North America, for instance, I´d always prefer a smaller venue, but preferrably outdoors. The Red Rocks in Colorado, The Klark County Amphitheather close to Portland (OR), The Molson Amphitheather in Toronto... amazing structures, intimate enough atmosphere... and in North America it is rare to see the crowd going too crazy - people tend to be more constrict... so no stadiums, thank you! I assume you could hear the crickets there...

A NHL Arena like the one the Canadiens play in Montreal can also work fine, despite the size. But it looks to me that this is the limit for North America.

In Europe I´d prefer even smaller venues. With a ceiling over our heads? Even better. In places like London and Amsterdam I´ve seen almost only cool, standing-quiet peopel watching the gigs, so I guess a venue with everyone seating very comfortable would fit better. Not quite like Berlin or the Eastern Europe, though. Please bring the outdoor venues like Wulheide to the top of the list when you´re among these people. The human experience, the passion is part of the show. Maybe a stadium there in the eastern side. But not AT ALL in the big capitals, almost no one there seems to properly enjoy the vibrant, uncontrolled, imense atmosphere a stadium gives us. No offense! =)

Now... South America? Africa? Exotic places like Istambul or passionate cities like Mexico or Moscow? Please order me a stadium, and a BIG ONE, all the time! ;)
It may be magical to share an intimate moment with artists like these guys in Pearl Jam every now and then, you may remember it forever. But mark my words: a great concert in a big stadium full of crazy, passionate fans that sing even the guitar riffs when there´s no vocals to sing, in an atmosphere in which you "risk" have 80, maybe 90 thousand people happy, dancing, crying their lungs out like there is no tomorrow, sharing a so intense thing that there is no life outside... that´s EPIC and I trully wish no living human being ever gets thru life whitout feeling it at least once! =)

    +1

Pearl Jam couldn't even sell out night two of Key Arena last time they were in Seattle. I'm not big on stadium shows. I saw U2 at Qwest Field in Seattle (sold out 74,000) and it was like watching the band on TV for 2+ hours.

I'd prefer to see PJ in more intimate, natural venues like The Gorge.

By the way, Edibervan, the Clark County Amphitheatre is now called the Sleep Country Amphitheater and it has always been an awful place to a see a show.

U2 has sold out most of the stadiums on the current tour.

Even if PJ did a stadium tour they would probably only have a capacity of around 40-50k as they have for recent Australian and South American shows in order to satisfy their safety concerns, so they wouldn't need to sell 70k tickets. I think on this basis they would do pretty well in terms of sales, they would probably only do 10-12 shows around the country anyway.
    My PJ shows:
    London 28/10/96, Las Vegas 11/7/98, London 29/5/00, Nurnburg 11/6/00, Prague 14/6/00, Salzburg 18/6/00, Verona 20/6/00, Milan 22/6/00, Zurich 23/6/00, New York 8-9/7/03, Boston 11/7/03, Reading Festival 27/8/06, Shepards Bush 11/8/09, Berlin 15/8/09, Manchester 17/8/09, London 18/8/09, Dublin 22/6/10, Belfast 23/6/10, London (HRC) 25/6/10, Alpine Valley (PJ20) 3-4/9/11, Manchester 20-21/6/12, Leeds 8/7/14, Milton Keynes 11/7/14 To be continued....

The only stadiums I would like to see them play are a few of the classic ballparks like Fenway, Wrigley, maybe Dodger Stadium (do they do concerts there?). No real interest in football stadiums.

But...if it meant they would add more dates and play more shows then I would be all for it.
