very excited for this week as i'm sure many of ya'll are.

in reading reviews of past eddie shows, it seems to me that each show always has a THAT guy - the guy who yells really stupid things at the worst possible times, is completely marinated, and absolutely clueless (funny how it never seems to be a THAT girl). sometimes, it seems, there are several. check out the australian ev reviews - there isn't a single show without at least one loudmouth douchebag who was so obnoxious that everyone noticed it and wrote about it.

mostly preaching to the choir here, i know. maybe it's just impossible to gather a few thousand people together at once without a few bad apples getting in. reckon some folks figure they paid a bunch of money and they're gonna do whatever the fuck they want, but, i figure i paid the same (and travelled across the country) to hear ed play and sing, not to hear drunky guy scream "play yellow ledbetter!" all nite.

wouldn't it be nice to go to some shows without THAT guy?

ps - ed, please play 'trouble' for bills' friend dennis. it'd mean a lot.

Yes. Yes it would. As long as I don't sit by the same guy making a freaking megaphone out of a poster to yell I will be very happy.

P.S. Ed, please play 25 Minutes to Go at Wiltern or Santa Barbara. Thx. :D

I agree, but at the same time I cannot totally condemn THAT GUY. (For the record, I am not him. ) I think for a lot of people they have a few drinks, maybe not even enough to get totally wasted, and then they walk into the venue for the first time and are blown away by how beautiful these theatres are. Then they find their seats and realize they are closer to the stage than they ever have been before and maybe ever will be again. So they get excited. Then Eddie comes out and blows their minds and they get even more excited. Pretty soon a little yelling come naturally.

Yeah, I understand being overwhelmed by the excitement. But - as I wrote in 2008, about That Guy (and in the case of Newark, That Girl), it's all about context (and the audience members shouting at you to shut the f--- up should be a sign that you are too excited). An Ed show is not a PJ show. Pretty much anything goes at a PJ show: I won't be batting an eye at whatever you are smoking/drinking/inhaling, and I'm as loud as anyone -- and I like to sing along, too.

But -- I don't behave that way at the NY Philharmonic, I don't behave that way at the theater, and I don't behave that way at an Ed show. I'm excited, you are excited, but I'm pretty sure you did not fight for tickets to hear me sing, and I know I am not making the trip to hear you sing, unless you happen to be Ed. Clap, cheer, yell all you want at the end of songs, but please, please, don't scream "Eddie!!! I want to have your baby!!!" or "Play Leash!!" in the middle of a song. Neither one is going to happen.

Seriously - I overheard a couple of guys after the show in Newark who wanted to find That Guy who kept shouting out PJ song requests and beat his ass.

I agree..I sure hope folks try to show some respect for Ed this time round. Ed handles it well...but we've all seen how upsetting it can be.

THAT guy or gal could be you

I feel for them, they know not what they do.

Need to pace it at the pre-parties, lots of hours of drink and sometimes no food.

THAT guy or gal was so looking forward to an EV concert,
and probably won't even remember it and be kicking themselves the next day. :(

Like I said, I agree, but what constitutes bad behavior? Yelling at a concert to me is kinda tame. Certainly not appropriate in this context but not a high crime either. Just my opinion.

so it's the booze that's to blame?

jesus, why is that shit even legal.

i have a little brother who tends to be THAT guy sometimes (he was even THAT guy at Elton John last winter. Elton John? tiny dancer? your song? daniel? jesus, glad i wasn't there) agewise, we're both over 40, but he stopped growing emotionally at about age 15. i will personally see to it that he is not THAT guy on thursday . if he tries to be, i'll promise to have him escorted out.

I'm sure the booze doesn't help but it isn't the root cause.

THAT GUY at Elton John seems like it would be a fantastic SNL skit. He could harass each week's musical guest. I'd laugh. :D

Don't get me wrong though. I do think the yelling at Eddie shows is out of control and sometimes a little embarrassing.

Exactly. And it cannot be defined because it is different for everyone, completely in the eye of the beholder.

When the performer tells you "shut the fuck up" (2008, Chicago night 2) I'm pretty sure you've definitely crossed the border to Badbehaviorland.

Agreed. But when that same performer tells the audience "Every time you yell, all I hear is "I'm an idiot!"", and then someone yells out "I'm an idiot!" and the performer cracks up on stage like he did at Boston 2 in 2008 it doesn't seem like that big of a deal.

There are definitely "Those Girls" at EV shows too...But I totally agree with what you're saying. It's horseshit and really is disrespectful.

"i'm an idiot" is probably the most clever THAT guy statement ever, and possibly the most truthful. i like that ed has a friendly rapport with the audience.

but, like stillhere said, it's all about respect. respect for ed while he's playing . . .

and self-respect too - maybe not a bad idea to check ourselves a bit as an audience. maybe not get as loaded as humanly possible, be wicked obnoxious, and piss everyone off.

    respect
