I think those people who are yelling at the fans for yelling are just as annoying. I am not "that guy" that yells but it is a concert and people are excited to be there. I am more of a boring audience member who is just chilled and relaxed enjoying the show. Let's all enjoy the show how we would like and not worry about being the "Eddie Police."0

i'm not calling the eddie police
or the boston police
or the police, like with sting and stewart copeland and that other guy
wouldn't it be nice if the audience was more respectful?
that was my pointuke can save the world0 -

Yeah it would be but its not going to happen. Most of the time its that guy who knows 3 songs which are usually Alive, Jeremy, and Evenflow and they desperately want to hear one. Its difficult to have thousands of people together, many who are drinking, and expect everyone to be respectful. Its not a perfect world, however I promise I won't yell at Eddie.0 -
Nashville show #2 last year.
3 guys a few rows back constantly screaming at Liam Finn and telling him he sucks
When eddie goes on stage, these 3 guys yell at people in front of them and when that doesnt work they start throwing pennies at everyone. Finally after about an hour of this they get kicked out.
As they were being escorted out they were yelling that they were going to wait by the door and kill everyone after the show..
Worst concert experience ever.Seen PJ 21 times live from 1994-20190 -

That is terrible. Assbags are everywhere. Did things calm down after they got booted?___________________________________________

Oh yeah, after they left the concert was great!
Although i did check my back on the way out to see if they were actually gonna follow up on their "threat."

Jeff Tweedy (Wilco) has dealt with this same issue, even publicly on his solo DVD.
Not sure what an artist can do in this situation. Their core audience is familiar with them in a rock concert setting. It's kind of like having football fans watch ballet. I think the best thing for Ed to do would be to acknowledge the environment and situation. After the first or second song ask for requests, let people yell their lungs out, point out the beautiful intimate environment and request the audience to try to keep it that way for everyone, then tell the audience he's got some special songs picked out and that they should trust him and enjoy the ride.....

I've never encountered this particular brand of rudeness, and I've seen a handful of "guy with a guitar" shows, including Chris Cornell's "Songbook" sets. Then again, most of those sets are in much smaller confines than the 2k+ venues Eddie is playing.
I'm seeing him in Long Beach, which has its fair shares of jerks - the last time I saw a show in the LB, it was Weezer/Foo, and the crowd was one of the worst I've ever seen. Suddenly I'm apprehensive! Is it too much to ask for a full-blown Temple of the Dog set? Probably.0 -
JA, Ed did that in 2008, but still there were the screamers.
I think you are right, there is this element at every "guy with a guitar" show. I saw Lloyd Cole again on Saturday -- I've been to a number of his shows over the last twenty years, some with a band, some where it's just Lloyd and his guitar. He generally attracts a pretty tame crowd, but still you get Those People. Saturday's show was in a wine bar/ restaurant, we all were sitting and having dinner, and still a drunk woman kept yelling "Perfect Skin! Perfect Skin!" -- even though it was the second or third song that he played. My husband and I were reminded of the time we saw Lloyd in San Francisco -- we refer to it as the "drunken pirate" show. Some well-lubricated Brits kept yelling "Shiver me timbers, Lloyd!" and "Lloyd, show us your chest!!" It just was not that kind of show, and Lloyd Cole is not that kind of performer, but that wasn't going to stop them. :roll:All those who seek to destroy the liberties of a democratic nation ought to know that war is the surest and shortest means to accomplish it.0 -

Cornell did a very cool thing by allowing the fans to do or say whatever they wanted during the last 3-5 songs. Everyone loosened up a bit and made for a great ending. Just saying!9.29.96, 8.28.98, 9.1.00, 7.5.03, 9.30.05, 6.1.06, 6.19.08, 6.20.08, 6.24.08, 10.27.09, 10.28.09, 10.30.09, 5.20.10, 9.3.11, 9.4.11, 9.2.12, 7.19.13...

Yeah, I saw "that guy" at one of the nights of Eddie's last Philly shows in 09. I was in the second or third row and there was an empty seat next to me while someone was at the bathroom or something and he sat right next to me. I figured no harm at first though seat jumping is kinda rude, especially at a small dignified show, which I now understand more. Anyhow he started yelling at inappropriate times and everyone got pissed. I politely told him you gotta go and he very politely obliged.
But I think people just weren't sure how to behave at Eddie's concerts is what it may mainly be about. I mean Eddie is still a rock star but I completely agree a different type of behavior is required, definitely less booze. Eddie just needs to tour more solo, in addition to Pearl Jam concerts of course, so we can get use to how to behave in a theater0 -
LOVE 'The thieves of silence' sequence in Water on the Road - Ed gives his speech and then THAT guy yells. The look on Ed's face.....priceless. Says it all really

No matter what show I go to, THAT guy is always there. THAT guy, can you please just stay inside your house?

:clap:curmudgeoness wrote:Yeah, I understand being overwhelmed by the excitement. But - as I wrote in 2008, about That Guy (and in the case of Newark, That Girl), it's all about context (and the audience members shouting at you to shut the f--- up should be a sign that you are too excited). An Ed show is not a PJ show. Pretty much anything goes at a PJ show: I won't be batting an eye at whatever you are smoking/drinking/inhaling, and I'm as loud as anyone -- and I like to sing along, too.
But -- I don't behave that way at the NY Philharmonic, I don't behave that way at the theater, and I don't behave that way at an Ed show. I'm excited, you are excited, but I'm pretty sure you did not fight for tickets to hear me sing, and I know I am not making the trip to hear you sing, unless you happen to be Ed. Clap, cheer, yell all you want at the end of songs, but please, please, don't scream "Eddie!!! I want to have your baby!!!" or "Play Leash!!" in the middle of a song. Neither one is going to happen.
Seriously - I overheard a couple of guys after the show in Newark who wanted to find That Guy who kept shouting out PJ song requests and beat his ass.If you hate somethin', don't you do it too.

Yeah I was considering changing my name to Thief of Silence b/c I thought it was a cleverly awesome way to describe those who scream out at shows however I do not wish to be a Thief of Silence therefore I didn't.Boston 5/17/10

Sigh. Simply the one aspect of EV Solo that sucks (and how hard tickets are of course). I had THAT guy yelling out for Lukin in Philly and I turned around and said, "He'll get to it." A simple polite acknowledgement that indeed we ALL heard you seems to snap some of them out of it, so no need to get in their grill, just polite "I'm sure he heard you by now." Demonstrate the behavior you desire, neh?[sic] happens0

being polite is cool
respect is cool
patience is cool
i think and hope boston will be cool on thursday

when you say 'that guy', are you referring to the guy who goes to a concert wearing the t-shirt of the band?0
