When I heard that Eddie was going to release this record I was put off. I thought, "How pretentious." I then heard
Longing to Belong on the radio and thought the same thing. Now I love that song, and the album has been a surprise delight. Not monumental, but quite pleasant. Completely satisfied. :) I'm also embarrassed to reply to a thread that starts out so negative. :(

    I'll admit it.....I haven't read this thread.

Ed can do whatever he wants. Far be it from me to suggest otherwise.

My only thought is...what does this album mean for the future of Pearl Jam? Will we get angry classics like "Blood" or "Leash" ever again? I sure hope so :?. I've changed a lot too in 20 years but I still love those songs

I'm sure we will, but I don't think they'll be classics. Ed's voice in my opinion is not suited for those anymore, and is more suited to the ITW and Backspacer songs. Ed sounds great at his solo shows, but with some of the band's music he has some trouble at times (and I don't understand how some people don't see this).

I'm glad that we'll get music in the future from Ed (based on the last few years) where he is playing music suited for his current voice and not music that makes you cringe at times.

I love Pearl Jam and i love Eddie Vedder. but i have to spit it out: "Ukulele songs" are simply annoying to me.. :( i cant listen to them all. just couple of songs (otherwise known in uke arrangments, like "Cant keep", or just known: like "Sleeples nights", etc.) stand out above the banal, irritaiting and kinda poor songs. Ukulele sound may be cool but maybe i am not cool enough to appreciate it. right after couple of songs i am getting a tooth-ache. i know, most of you will crucify me here for what i am saying, but even "Longing to belong" is not at Eddies own level. not to mention the video - so naive i cant understand why. all this beach walking with uke, dancing with a bride/wife - i dunno.. it is a little tacky. it is like singing about love and keeping your hand on your heart.. i know Eddie Vedder can do better. i wish he had done so.
in my personal opinion, one uke song at a time as a pre-opener, bonus, or something would be cool, rare and most welcome. would be enough.
dont get me wrong: it is cool artist experiment, it is cool Eddie writes great lyrics, it just doesnt go together, to me, of course. Ed's voice doesnt blend with this 4-strings guitar at times. i wish i could listen to these songs at some campfire, having dried couple of beers and simply enjoy Eddie's voice and company. but my home stereo simply says "no" to "Ukulele Songs".
    sorry to say that.

Gee, you really got crucified, didn't you?

I would never cringe at blood, leash, animal, etc.......no matter how badly he butchers them

I don't think Uke Songs has anything to do with "the future of Pearl Jam."

    Amen!

Backspacer did have some vibes of ITW. Like Just Breathe.

c'mon it's an album of ukelele songs. I never expected anything earth shattering from it and that is what I got.

    definently not for everyone.

Agree completely here. It may not be for everyone but it certainly works for me.

The more I listen, the more I like. Current fav is 'Without You'...

  • hopefully now the new album will be a bit more up-tempo, since all the mellower stuff is on this record

and on another note...anyone spun BACKSPACER in the last 10 months, because I sure haven't

I think EV got caught up in the challenge of squeezing out an entire album of uke songs. I think its pretty dece, but its an awful lot of uke. That being said, I doubt many others could do it. I've come to realize we have a lot of John Mayer, Madonna, and Lady Gaga fans on here, so I can expect that argument. I like PJ as a whole, a whole lot better.
